Chapter 313 It seems that you already have a soul

There is a small amount of information about Zamiajing in Lin Zixuan's mind.

This Soviet writer is a figure comparable to the British writer Orwell and Huxley. The three of them wrote three novels, known as the "Dystopian Trilogy".

They are Zamiatin's "Us", Huxley's "Beautiful New World" and Orwell's "1984".

"We" was published in the United States in English in 1924, "Beautiful New World" was published in 1932, and "1984" was published in 1949. Both "Beautiful New World" and "1984" have some references to "We".

Zamiatin was born in 1884 and graduated from the Department of Shipbuilding of Petersburg Institute of Technology.

In 1914, he published the novel "A Small Town in Other Provinces". Gorky praised his writing talent. He actively participated in the October Revolution in Russia, was imprisoned twice and exiled three times.

He can be said to be the backbone of the revolution.

After the outbreak of the Russian Revolution, he rushed back to Russia, published many dramas and novels, and became a leader in the Petersburg literary circle.

However, after the founding of the Soviet Union, he keenly perceived the various drawbacks in the new system and wrote a series of critical articles, which were named and criticized by Soviet newspapers as dangerous subversive elements for criticizing the new regime's policies and satirizing the status quo.

He wrote the novel "We" in 1920, which was severely criticized by the authorities and was prohibited from publishing in the Soviet Union.

It was not until 1924 that the manuscript of "We" was taken out of the Soviet Union and published in Western society.

Zamiatin once said: "Real literature can only be created by lunatics, hermits, pagans, fantasies, rebels, skeptics, not those smart, capable, loyal officials."

He went from a staunch advocate of the revolution to a subversive, just because he saw the problem and told the truth.

When an intellectual loses the ability to think independently and only knows that he is following his orders, what is the difference between him and a slave?

"We" is a novel that combines science fiction and social satire, writing a story that takes place in the future.

In this future world, residents have completely lost their personality to the point where they have no name of their own and are only named after numbers.

They live in transparent glass houses, making it easier for the escort to monitor them.

They all wore the same uniform clothing and made a living by food. The usual entertainment was four people in a row, and the national anthem of the unified country was played on the speaker.

People in this world even conduct their work and rest strictly in accordance with the "Procedures and Times" issued by the Kingdom.

People in the Kingdom cannot find a partner by themselves. Instead, they are designated by relevant institutions of the Kingdom under unified leadership.

Send a pink ticket to the numbered men and women, and let them pair with the tickets. After pairing, they are allowed to put down the curtains in the glass apartment for an hour to perform *******.

The kingdom is ruled by an individual known as the "benefiting the Lord". He is re-elected every year by all the people and is always elected unanimously.

This is the future world that Zamiatin imagines, a society with no limits and freedoms and strict rules.

The protagonist is a mathematician and engineer. He occasionally peeks at ancient times and finds that people at that time actually lived in freedom, that is, they still lived in disorganization and barbarism.

His life was consistent until he met a beautiful woman, which aroused the secrets in his heart.

He thought he was sick and went to see a doctor.

The doctor told him that your situation is not good, it seems that you already have a soul.

The protagonist was shocked. How could he suddenly have a soul? He has never had it before.

The American man he knew was a member of an underground resistance organization. Under her temptation, the protagonist was confused and embarked on the road to overthrow the kingdom and began to rebel.

However, rebellion cannot go smoothly.

Authorities announced that the cause of the recent unrest has been discovered: Someone has suffered from a fantasy disease.

The location of the nerve center responsible for fantasy is determined, and this disease can be cured with Ix light therapy.

The protagonist underwent surgery and returned to his original state. He gave his accomplices and lover to the authorities.

Those who were unwilling to undergo surgery were sent to the machine that benefited the Lord, turned into a wisp of smoke and a pool of clear water, and disappeared.

At the end, the protagonist strengthened his belief in the ideal of the kingdom: "A temporary high-pressure wall has been built on Heng Street No. 40. I hope that victory will belong to us. I don't just hope, I am sure that victory belongs to us. Because reason will win."

Strictly speaking, in Western society, this is an excellent science fiction novel.

However, many passages in the novel have thoughts about the Russian Revolution, such as the following dialogue between the protagonist and the heroine.

"Did you realize what you're implying a revolution?"

"Of course it's a revolution. Why not?"

"Because there is no revolution, our revolution is the last, and there will never be another one. Everyone knows this."

"Dear, you are a mathematician: tell me, what is the last number?"

"What do you mean, the last number?"

"Oh, let's talk about the biggest number!"

"But it's ridiculous. The numbers are infinite, and it's impossible to have the last one."

"Then why do you talk about the final revolution?"

This may be the reason why the novel was banned from publication by the Soviet authorities.

Lin Zixuan has never watched "We" or "Beautiful New World" in later generations, but has only watched "1984".

This is because there is a reality show in the United States called "Big Brother".

The content of the program is to select a group of strangers from all over the United States as "roommates" to live in a villa full of cameras and microphones, and start a two-month-long life together.

Their every move in the room will be recorded and edited and broadcast on TV.

During this period, they need to gain rights through competition, to rush away the others in the room by voting, and the person who stays will receive a high bonus.

The name of this show comes from a sentence in "1984": Big brother is watching you.

It means being in a world that is monitored at any time without freedom and no freedom.

After watching the reality show, Lin Zixuan went to read the novel "1984", and the two were completely incomparable.

Reality shows are ordinary entertainment programs, with roommates showing off and attacking each other as points, and after watching it, they laughed it off.

The novel "1984" describes the lives of people in totalitarian society. After reading it, people feel chilling. What a terrifying world it is.

"1984" and "Us" have some connection, and Orwell was deeply influenced by Zamiatin.

Because of this reason, Lin Zixuan wanted to meet Zamiyajing.

He inquired about it and found that since 1920, Zamiatin has been attacked by the Soviet literary community and is in a difficult situation.

Zamiatin's novels cannot be published, the dramas written cannot be performed in the theater, and he was forced to withdraw from the Writers Association, and he fell into trouble in his life.

Articles criticizing Zamiatin often appear in Soviet newspapers, which is no secret in Moscow.

Jiang Jingguo dissuaded Lin Zixuan's idea.

Contacting Soviet writers defined as subversive elements in Moscow was not a good idea and could very well cause unnecessary trouble.

Lin Zixuan thought about it and gave up. Even if he met, he couldn't talk much. He didn't want to cause trouble.

He didn't want to cause trouble, so he came to the door.
