Chapter 29: Nothing happens today (1)
In an inconspicuous small hotel in the corner of Paris, a rapid knock sounded.
"Luka? Are you inside Luka? Something happened! A big thing!"
The person knocking on the door was Giles. He was holding a thick stack of paper reports in his hand, and was anxiously knocking on the small wooden door in front of him. The sun had risen to the sky, and the scorching sun spread the dazzling light to every corner of Paris. Even the singer dancer who worked all night in the tavern had already started to get up and dress up, but Luka was still hiding in his room alone, not knowing what he was doing. According to the hotel owner, she had not gone out for several days.
Giles knocked on the door for a long time, but received no response. He was anxious and shouted into the room: "Luka!Luka! Are you okay? If you don't answer, I'll kick the door in!"
With a "bang", the door was kicked open by Giles. The door panel was too old and turned to the ground.
What appeared in front of Giles were stacked with mountains of documents, and the dew card that was buried beneath the pile of documents, like a dog hiking in a nest.
"Luka?Luka! Wake up! Wake up!"
There was no echo. Luka was still asleep under the pile of documents, and I'm afraid even the earthquake would not wake her up.
Generally speaking, it is time to doubt whether Luka is still alive. But as Luka's childhood sweetheart, Gilles has seen such things a lot. He pushed away the pile of documents pressing on Luka, put his hand into Luka's neck and pinched it. This pinch was more effective than any shouting. Luka shuddered and immediately bounced from the ground, looking at the surroundings with a warning. When she noticed that there was only Gujiles in the room, she breathed a sigh of relief, and then bowed to Giji apologetically: "Sorry, I'm too relaxed."
"There is no war now, and you don't have to get up early to do farm work. Sleeping for a little longer is nothing. But—" Giles stared at Luka's dark circles with concern, "How long has it been since you slept?"
"How long? I..." Luka couldn't answer for a moment. But she soon noticed the stack of documents in Giles's hand, so she said, "It's okay, I'm already awake. Is there anything urgent? Tell me?"
"It's about the public trial of the Count of Ile de France. During your sleep, something went wrong..."
"I thought there was an enemy attacking Paris." Luca breathed a sigh of relief again, "I have given you full authority to handle the public trial. Just make the decision by yourself, there is no need to report to me."
"This is a bit big," said Giles. "There were people who died in the city yesterday, and a lot of people."
"A lot of people died?" Luka suddenly became nervous, "What's going on?"
"I haven't figured out what's going on yet. The dead are all the confidants of the Duke of Aquitaine... In fact, all the confidants of the Duke of Aquitaine died yesterday. When they died, they were in different locations, both in the east, south, west, and north of the city, and there were no scars on their bodies. According to several witnesses, they were doing things normally, and suddenly fell to the ground and died inexplicably. I suspected that they were poisoned collectively, so I asked the doctor to identify them. These were all doctors' appraisal reports, but looking at these reports, it seemed that they were not poisonous - it should be a new poison. The doctor could not find it, otherwise it would not be able to explain. No matter what, if so many people died at the same time, there must be spies in the city, and the scale must be quite large. At this point, I reasonably speculate that this is the remnant party of the Count of the Ile de France. If these people are not arrested, the public trial may have been postponed again."
"So that's the case." Luka nodded, "Then push it back. Let's talk about it when it's safe."
"But this is the seventh time that it has been delayed backwards."
"It's okay for the 100th time. We don't have to hurry. Let's prepare everything before we talk about it. If the Count of Ile-de-Island France is robbed on the execution ground, it will be troublesome, isn't it?"
Giles' expression suddenly became serious:
"...Luca, I had a premonition. Do you actually don't want to publicly examine the Earl of Ile de France?"
Luka subconsciously avoided Giles's sight.
Giles focused on the pile of documents in the room. He picked up a few of them and swept them roughly: "Are you investigating the Duke of Aquitaine?"
"I think the Count of Ile-de-France may have been framed!" shouted Luca, "He is not the culprit of the Black Death!"
"If not, so what? Luca, think about the verdict of the Earl of France on my father." Giles threw away the pile of documents in his hand. "He has never been a fair judge, so why should we give him justice?"
"But if I am unfair, then what is the difference between me and the Count of Ile-de-France? The old order was overthrown and established on it, but it was still the same old order, and nothing changed..."
"How could it not change? Killing the Earl of France is the will of the people! After getting rid of him, all those who follow you can get rewards, get rid of the status of serfs, pay off their debts, buy your own fields, and become a free man! You will also become famous and make a comeback! And I will inherit the name of my father and become a knight! And if you insist on clearing the innocence of the Earl of France, do you know what will happen? You will stand opposite everyone and be criticized together! And if you successfully convince them, it will be even worse. You and those who follow you will become rebels! The most important thing is, Luca, isn't the Earl of France our enemy? Why do you have to pity your enemy?"
"I know, I know all these things." Luka closed her eyes in pain. "So I didn't stop it, but gave you the public trial. Why did you have to come and ask me for my opinion?"
"The public trial cannot be postponed any further," said Giles. "The security forces in the city are insufficient and must be strengthened. I think the defenders of the Bastille should be transferred to assist in the security of the city. In this case, it is meaningless to defend the Bastille."
"Do as you want, Giles, you can do whatever you want. The public trial is over, just tell me. If a strong enemy appears, I can ask me to help. I just want to be quiet now... I'm just going to be quiet."
"Okay, but you have to be careful not to stay up late. Staying up late hurts your body, and you can't make up for it if you sleep for a long time."
Giles took a few steps back and gently pulled up the door.
