Chapter 15 The Road to Advancement of Bandits (2)(1/2)

In the dark Valron village, Chen Dao found Major Schubert with a look of tiredness. Major Schubert's face was not only tired but also a hint of anger. No one who was awakened during a sleeping sound would probably not be in a good mood.

"Someone touched the lightning, it must be the Polish cavalry that did it." Major Schubert said.

"We just assumed that they would come, but we didn't expect that they would actually come, and it was so fast." Chen Dao said as he turned on the flashlight and looked at his watch. "It's 1:30 now, and there are at least 6 hours before dawn."

Major Schubert shook his head and dispelled the last trace of sleepiness in his mind: "Our sweat has not flowed in vain, and the barbed wire and minefields we set up can now come in handy."

In the afternoon of that day, when the paratroopers of the 1st and 3rd Battalions were resting, Major Schubert was heartbroken and ordered that the 2nd Battalion, which had not had a good rest for two days and two nights, set up a defensive position near Valron Village.

At that time, I saw the paratroopers of the 2nd Battalion walking around, but they were still forcibly setting up barbed wire and burying landmines. Chen Dao couldn't help but persuade Major Schubert to let the paratroopers rest overnight and start construction tomorrow dawn. After all, the Polish cavalry was just an imaginary enemy and might not necessarily appear, but was directly rejected by Major Schubert, because sweating was better than bleeding.

The paratroopers were busy until after 9 pm to finish work. After Major Schubert accepted the fortifications, it was already past 10 o'clock in the evening. Finally, with Major Schubert's order to pass the acceptance and rest, the paratroopers cheered and then plunged into the trenches, enjoying the hard-earned sleep.

Now Chen Dao finally understood what Major Schubert said is better than blood. At 8:30 pm, Student had set out with the 1st and 3rd Battalions. Now there are only 2nd Battalions in Valen Village on defense. After two days of fighting, the 2nd Battalion, which originally had four companies, had reduced its personnel to only 3 companies. If Major Schubert was soft-hearted to agree to his request during the day, he and the paratroopers of these three companies will face the unknown Polish cavalry in the incomplete fortifications.

"The wounded have all moved to the basement. Now we just need to wait for the Poles to jump into the trap themselves." Chen Dao said.

Major Schubert nodded and then issued several orders. Chen Dao reached out and took off the MP38 submachine gun on his back, and followed Major Schubert to the position north of Valron Village.

······

To the north of Valen Village, Major General Lewandowski sat upright on the war horse, his body fluctuating rhythmically with the trotting of the war horse. This is an instinct developed through years of military career.

Frowning, Lewandowski thought hard about the combat strategy tonight, but found that he had no chance of winning. After the air strike, the cavalry and artillery battalion, which originally had 12 75mm cannons, now only 3 cannons can be put into battle. With two 81mm mortars, this is all the heavy firepower he has. Using these five cannons to attack a regiment defense of Valron Village is tantamount to commit suicide.

Thinking of the information reported by the Engineer Company, they dug out a total of 14 land mines. Lewandowski was under even more pressure.

Lewandowski is not an idiot. He doesn't think that the Germans want to block their troops with these dozen mines, but are still so far from Valen Village. Of course, he would not naively think that the Germans have limited number of mines on their hands and can only lay such a trivial minefield.

There is only one answer. These mines were used by the Germans to warn. There must be German scouts ambushing near this minefield. Every move of themselves and their subordinates may have been reported to the German army in Valen Village. They must have polished their "butcher knife" and waited for them to die.

Lewandowski sighed with a heavy expression: "Hmph, those barbaric Germans, don't treat me as an idiot. I will not let the young men of Poland make unnecessary sacrifices."

A scout found Lewandowski and reported to him that the reconnaissance company had seen Valen Village. Lewandowski immediately ordered the troops to suspend the march, and then rode his horse to follow the scouts toward the front of the team.

Lewandowski was taken to a slope by the reconnaissance company commander. With the help of starlight, Major General Lewandowski could vaguely see the outline of a village in his telescope. The German army there obviously implemented light control, and the entire village was dark and without a trace of light.

Lewandowski calculated the distance. The village of Valen was about 1 kilometer away from him. After looking at the nearby terrain, Lewandowski sneered a few times, and then ordered the cavalry to dismount and walk to set up a defensive position near the earth slope.

He then sent a reconnaissance company to scatter on both wings of the troops to search for whether there were German scouts nearby.

The well-trained cavalry completed the deployment in less than half an hour. Lewandowski looked at his watch and it was 2:40 am.

Lewandowski waved his hand in a daze, and two 81mm mortars that had been on standby behind the earth slope opened fire at the same time. After a while, Lewandowski saw two flames flashing from Valang Village, and an explosion came immediately.

Guided by the observation post on the soil slope, two mortars adjusted the parameters, and two more shells were shot out. This time, they did not shoot out and all fell into Valang Village.

After four shells, with the help of the explosion of the flames, Lewandowski vaguely saw cylinders standing up near Valen Village, and there were thin black lines between the cylinders and cylinders. Lewandowski, who participated in World War I, immediately judged that it was wooden stakes and barbed wire.

Lewandowski couldn't help but secretly glad that he had made a wise choice. If he used his existing troops to attack the German army in Valen Village, the barbed wire alone would be covered with the bodies of countless Polish young men.

Soon after, three 75mm guns also joined the ranks of shelling the village of Valang. They were also set behind the earth slope and blind shots were carried out under the guidance of the observation post at the top of the earth slope.

Lewandowski's plan was to use night cover to harass the German army in Valen Village with shelling, so that they knew that there were Polish troops operating nearby and did not dare to do their best to attack the flanks of the 14th Infantry Division, so as to achieve the goal of restraining them, and it was also considered to complete the task assigned by the superiors to the Bodesky Cavalry Brigade.

Lewandowski had a sense of luck in his heart. He really hoped that the German commander of Valen Village would be a hot-headed guy. If the German commander was furious under the shelling, he could not help but send troops to attack, so that the fortifications they set up around Valen Village would lose their effect, and he could use defensive war to kill a group of German troops and avenge the soldiers who died in the air raid.

I have to say that Lewandowski's plan was quite appropriate, but he missed a little bit. The German army in Valen village had only one dissatisfied paratrooper battalion, not a regiment, and was unable to attack his troops at all.

In Valen village, both Chen Dao and Major Schubert were blinded by the sudden shelling. When the shelling just began, they thought it was a prelude to the Polish army's attack, so they held their breath and waited for the Polish cavalry to attack. As a result, the cavalry charge they imagined did not appear, and there were only artillery shells flying one after another.

After waiting for more than ten minutes, the two of them had confirmed that the Poles were preparing to carry out the shelling to the end. The wailing sounds of wounded people came from nearby positions, and paratroopers were injured in the shelling.

What is more worrying than casualties is the anxiety and uneasiness brought to the paratroopers. How long will the shelling last? How many enemies are hidden around? What will they do next? These questions are like huge rocks pressing on the hearts of the paratroopers.

Chen Dao and Major Schubert were lying in the trenches. Major Schubert said: "Just by sound, there are two 81mm mortars and 75mm guns that are bombarding us. I don't know if this is all the artillery they have, or just part of the artillery."

Chen Dao asked anxiously: "What should we do next? Should we just sit here and do nothing?"

Major Schubert pointed to the north and said, "Did you see the fire over there?"

Chen Dao picked up the telescope and looked north. Sure enough, he could see a faint fire in the night sky in the north. The fire lights flashed like stars embedded in the night sky.

"I saw it, what are you going to do?" Chen Dao asked.

"I'm going to send a platoon to investigate the enemy situation there," said Major Schubert. "Major Rosen, you go and gather our 81mm mortars, and we'll give them a few shells."

"Leave it to me." Chen Dao said, jumping out of the trench and executing the order.

More than ten minutes later, in the south of Valang Village, the gunmen used the flames from the Borussian artillery to mark the distance, and the six 81mm mortars of the 2nd Battalion roared and fired against the Polish artillery.

After the German mortars began to be fired, Chen Dao's anxious mood gradually flashed, and a strong desire to pee came to his heart.

Hiding behind a bungalow that had collapsed halfway, Chen Dao happily put the water in pain. After the water was released, Chen Dao was in a good mood and raised his belt, and walked towards the north of the village in the dark.

Turning around the corner, Chen Dao had just walked less than ten meters away. A loud "boom" sound came from behind Chen Dao. The explosion of air waves wrapped around countless broken bricks and stones hit Chen Dao's back. Chen Dao, a dog's standard posture of eating shit, fell to the ground.

After a long time, Chen Dao trembled and got up from the ground, looking back at the landing point of the bomb, which was the corner where he had just released the water.

There was only half of the brick wall that was originally about the same height as him. If he had walked away a few seconds later, wouldn't he have died young like that wall? The more Chen Dao thought about it, the more he became more and more afraid.

After trembling for a while, a sense of anger arose in Chen Dao's fear. He cursed at the unknown Po army commander, "It's fine if you don't play according to common sense, but you dare to bombard me with guns. This is the fifth time in three days."

With anger, Chen Dao found Major Schubert in the north of the village. Major Schubert was listening to a report from a messenger. The paratroopers sent out to reconnaissance detoured to the right wing of the Polish cavalry and confirmed that the Polish army was about one kilometer north. Because it was dark and the vision was poor, it was impossible to judge the specific number of enemies.

"Did you see the artillery that attacked us?" Chen Dao asked.

The messenger nodded.

"Are there other artillery around those artillery?" asked Major Schubert.

"No, at least I didn't see other artillery near those guns, but there were two armored vehicles." said the messenger.

"Armored vehicles, as far as I know, only the infantry division headquarters or the brigade of the cavalry brigade in the Polish Army have armored vehicles. Is it a cavalry brigade near us?" Major Schubert quickly grasped the point.

"Even if they are a cavalry brigade, they have no combat power now, those artillery are evidence." Chen Dao said.

"They have no combat power after being attacked by air strikes, so they use this method of shelling to harass us. I think we should take the initiative to attack and kill them." Chen Dao continued.

Major Schubert thought for a while and made a decision to send a company to attack, but not to attack the Poles, but acted according to the opportunity. He handed over the final decision of the battle to the company commander of the 6th Company who led the team to attack.

"I'll go too." Chen Dao said.

"Major Rosen, I suggest you stay in the village, it is safer here." Major Schubert knew the importance of his "brother-in-law" Chen Dao, and stopped him without hesitation.

"It is the real danger to stay in the village. I just got bombarded by the Poles." Chen Dao said angrily, "The shells landed more than five meters away from me. If it weren't for being blocked by a wall, you could have a memorial service for me."

The two of them had a long dispute, and Chen Dao insisted on going. Major Schubert had no choice but to urge the 6th company commander to protect Chen Dao's safety.

After Chen Dao left, Major Schubert secretly vowed that he would not take on the task of being a bodyguard in the future, especially those who were protected like the "brother-in-law" who did not cooperate.

After the order was issued, the paratroopers from the 6th Company began to gather, and Chen Dao stood aside and thought about how to avenge the enemy.

Looking around the night, Chen Dao suddenly realized that this kind of night was really not suitable for attack. If he fired first, the flames at the muzzle would definitely expose the target. At that time, he didn't know which dark corner would kill him.

What should I do if I don’t attack? Should I just watch the Poles from the side? Chen Dao thought hard.

After the 6th Company gathered, the 6th Company Commander walked to Chen Dao and said, "Major, we are going to set off."

"What do you decide after discovering those Poles?" Chen Dao asked modestly. After all, the decision of this battle lies with the 6th Company Commander.

"I need to go to the scene to check the terrain and the enemy's strength to decide. If the enemy's strength is huge, we will wait until dawn and call the Air Force bombers to help."

"Dawn, bomber?" Chen Dao murmured, and an idea suddenly popped up in his mind. The Polish cavalry opposite had been subjected to air strikes for a whole day. Don't their commander know that the German bombing opportunity will come again after dawn? What will the Polish cavalry do before dawn?

Thinking of this, Chen Dao's eyes suddenly became clear and pulled the 6th Company Commander to the side. After discussing, the paratroopers of the 6th Company set off and had 200 landmines in their hands.

Under the leadership of the messenger, the 6th Company quickly found the advance platoon. After the two sides met, they used the cover of night to march northward.

Following the west side of the highway, Chen Dao and Company 6 traveled northward. After communicating all the way, Chen Dao already knew that the commander of Company 6 was named Chopin.

After walking for more than half an hour, Captain Chopin suddenly stopped the team and pointed to the road and said to Chen Dao: "Major, look here, the terrain on both sides of the road is much higher than that on the road. It is a good place to ambush them. We are here to ambush them."

"Listen to you." Chen Dao said.

At the command of Captain Chopin, the paratroopers of the 6th Company became busy. Mines were buried underground, and foxgloves appeared on both sides of the road.

Chen Dao took the engineer shovel and two paratroopers together to dig a fox pit that could accommodate three people. After the fox pit was dug, the three jumped in.

Chen Dao watched the two paratroopers set up a light machine gun facing the highway, and he also put the bullets on the MP38 rifle on the edge of the foxglove. Then the three of them sat down with their backs against the foxglove.

"Are you Major Rosen?" a paratrooper asked in a low voice.

"You..." Chen Dao didn't expect anyone to recognize him.

He couldn't see his appearance clearly in the night. When he heard the familiar voice, Chen Dao hesitated and asked: "Are you Corporal Steiner?"

"It's me, Major."

"So it's an old friend." Chen Dao said, taking out a pack of cigarettes and taking out two to hand them to Corporal Steiner and the paratrooper next to him.

"This is Meyer Schumacher, Private, and Hamburger." Corporal Steiner introduced.

"Hello, Major." Mayer said with a smile.

The three of them quickly formed a group of people and started chatting from all over the world. It was not until the construction of the ambush position of the 6th Company was completed that the three of them remained silent under the order, and the tranquility on both sides of the road returned to peace.

······

Lewandowski looked at his watch and it was almost dawn. In order to avoid the air strike, he had no choice but to order a retreat.

The cavalry retreated from their positions one after another, carefully avoiding the mortar-former that fell from time to time, and then boarded the horse and began to retreat.

Lewandowski ordered his subordinates to rush back to the woods before dawn, and only there could hide a team of nearly 3,000 people in the brigade.
