Chapter 23 The Last Straw

In the early morning of the 27th, the Prime Minister of Israel held an emergency cabinet meeting.

Although Israel repeatedly claimed after the war that the cabinet meeting mainly discussed how to save front-line troops on the verge of collapse, and the General Staff proposed a plan to use the 202nd Airborne Brigade to launch airborne operations in the rear of the Egyptian army, and even on the west bank of the Suez Canal, to capture the Egyptian army's logistics supply center, there are more clues, or unproven data, that is, to show that the Israeli Defense Minister at that time proposed the use of nuclear weapons, that is, to destroy the main legion of the Egyptian army through tactical nuclear strikes.

Later, an Israeli Air Force officer who did not want to be named also claimed that on the morning of the 27th, the 27th squadron of the Israeli Air Force, the most elite air force, received an order issued by the Prime Minister's Office, and four elite pilots received orders separately, and four modified F-22i fighter jets were sent to the hangar under the supervision of Mossad agents and loaded with special bombs.

From a military perspective, the use of nuclear weapons is the only way to turn the situation around.

Some people mentioned that airborne combat can also turn the situation around. However, on the 27th, the Israeli Air Force did not seize air superiority. In fact, except for a few hours after the war, Israel had never obtained absolute air superiority, so it was impossible to ensure the smooth progress of the airborne combat. Even if it was carried out at night and the threat was small, the Israeli army on the Sinai Peninsula might not have been able to hold on at all.

That's why the IDF did not use the 202nd Airborne Brigade.

Fortunately, the Israeli Prime Minister was not confused on this crucial issue and rejected the combat plan proposed by the Ministry of Defense.

From a political perspective, if Israel uses nuclear weapons, it will be not far from the destruction of its country.

Although China did not participate in the war directly, China has been talking about the nuclear issue, and at the beginning of the year it raised questions to members of global climate affairs organizations such as the United States, suspecting that Israel had hidden nuclear warheads and demanded a comprehensive verification of the entire Israeli territory. If Israel uses nuclear weapons at this time, it would be equivalent to giving China a justification and giving China enough reason to directly send troops to the war. For global interests, the United States will definitely not fight against China at this time, and will not even give Israel moral support.

You should know that the comprehensive destruction of nuclear weapons was proposed by the United States, not by China.

If the United States supports Israel, the reason for the complete destruction of nuclear weapons will be untenable, and any other nuclear-capable country will assemble and produce nuclear warheads again. The United States' prestige and hegemony will be challenged, and its global influence will inevitably decline sharply.

Of course, the reactions of the Arab and Islamic countries must also be considered.

In short, the use of nuclear weapons is absolutely not politically feasible.

What should I do if I can’t use nuclear weapons or use airborne troops?

The only option is to retreat!

On the morning of the same day, the Israeli General Staff issued a retreat order. Almost at the same time, the Israeli Prime Minister once again requested the United States, hoping that the United States would urgently provide emergency assistance to the drug supply.

The problem is that it is too late to retreat at this time.

Before the Israeli General Staff issued a retreat order, Qi Kaiwei had issued an order to the Third Army: to dispatch an independent armored brigade to advance in the direction of Gusaimai in the form of field marching, and must arrive before 4 pm and block the retreating Israeli army.

In other words, Qi Kaiwei had already expected that the Israeli army would retreat in full swing.

At around 8 o'clock in the morning, the independent armored brigade, which had 160 main battle tanks, 220 armored vehicles, and 84 self-propelled artillery, set off from the battlefield north of Nehel after carrying sufficient ammunition and enough fuel for marching 600 kilometers.

In fact, this is not an independent armored brigade, but a pieced together by multiple battalions from different troops.

For example, the three armored battalions come from three troops, only one battalion is equipped with the Type 24 main battle tank, and the other two battalions are equipped with the Type 04 main battle tank.

In order to facilitate command, Qi Kaiwei personally appointed the commander of the Third Armored Division to direct assault operations.

Of course, the Egyptian army did not relax its offensive operations on the front battlefield.

But by this time, the First Army and the Third Army had all their troops.

In order to enhance the offensive ability, Qi Kaiwei ordered the Second Armored Division of the Second Army stationed in Ismailia and the 24th Infantry Division to cross the Suez Canal at full speed, followed the counterattack troops at the fifth stop to advance eastward, and strive to join forces from the Third Army on the North Route 3 within 24 hours. In order to avoid delays in the main force, the Egyptian army also dispatched four reserve infantry divisions.

There is no doubt that this new force played a crucial role.

At around 10 o'clock in the morning, the vanguard of the Second Armored Division arrived at the front line, and the Egyptian army, which was in charge of the attack, had reached its limit. It was the Second Armored Division that rushed forward in time, and with the assistance of the 24th Infantry Division, the Egyptian army's assault operation in the west did not stop.

This is definitely a disaster for the same exhausted Israeli army.

Not to mention, under the threat of Egypt's main force, the Israel Defense Force had to slow down its retreat and let the six brigades in the west continue to persist. If the defense line continues to shrink, the Israeli army in the east will lose room for maneuver and will not be able to withdraw smoothly.

It can be said that the Israeli army was even ready to give up six armored brigades at that time.

The question is, can the six armored brigades withstand the Second Armored Division and the 24th Infantry Division?

You should know that before the arrival of the Second Armored Division and the 24th Infantry Division, the six Israeli armored brigades had reached the point where they were out of ammunition and food. According to the Israeli military's combat record, the tanks fighting on the front line could only be divided into six artillery shells, and they were mainly armor-piercing bombs and grenades. The armor-piercing bombs were not left and could only be distributed to the ace tanks. What's more serious was that the fuel of the six brigades was almost exhausted. In defensive operations, the Israeli army even buried some tanks in the sand and used them as fixed firepower points, so that the ace tankers could obtain more fuel. In addition, a large number of wounded soldiers who were eager to be sent were also a serious problem, and many seriously injured people could not even receive timely treatment.

In fact, by this time, even the infantry had not much ammunition in their hands.

When retreating, in order to prevent the materials from falling into the hands of the enemy, the Israeli army had to blow up Jichu's supply station, and there was no time to take away all the materials.

At that time, there were only about 14,000 officers and soldiers who could still fight in the six brigades.

In the case of urgent ammunition, it is obviously unlikely that the Egyptian soldiers who want to block the 25,000 fighting spirits will be extremely high, and they will never have to worry about ammunition.

At that time, two brigade commanders asked the guards to send the military flag back.

This shows that they had never thought of leaving the battlefield alive.

Before noon arrived, the two brigades were annihilated by the Egyptian army, hundreds of Israeli troops died in battle, and more Israeli officers and soldiers were captured after they had run out of ammunition and food.

At less than four o'clock in the afternoon, the other four armored brigades were completely defeated.

To be precise, in addition to some Israeli officers and soldiers who fled the battlefield on foot, the four armored brigades were wiped out, and thousands of tanks, tanks, and military vehicles were abandoned by the Israeli army because of fuel exhaustion. Because the Egyptian army advanced very fast, the Israeli army did not even have time to blow up the abandoned main combat equipment. It was also on this battlefield that the Egyptian army seized the first complete "Mekava 6" main battle tank. Because more Israeli main battle tanks were seized later, the "Mekava 6" was not transported to China, but sent to the Egyptian military museum.

When the Western Front collapsed, the situation on Highway 3 also became precarious.

At around 2 pm, the Third Army had cleaned up the battlefield and temporarily reorganized the troops that could still fight, and continued to advance northward according to Qi Kaiwei's deployment. However, in this direction, the four armored brigades of the Israeli army still had enough combat power and ammunition was not very short of time, so the Third Army's advancement speed was not fast, and it only advanced less than twenty kilometers within two hours, which did not pose a fatal threat to the Israeli army.

However, the situation did not improve.

At around 4:30, the armored assault cluster of the Third Army arrived near Gusaimai. Although it was about half an hour later than Qi Kaiwei asked, it finally arrived before dark. More importantly, Gusaimai only had one military brigade, and it was a reserve infantry brigade!

After discovering that the Israeli army was empty in defense, the commander of the Third Armored Division immediately issued an offensive order.

Before dark, the armored troops of the Egyptian army broke through the Israeli defense line and attacked the Gusaimai city. To be precise, the town area, because Gusaimai is just a small town with a population of less than 5,000, and most of the residents had escaped before the Israeli army arrived, and they were not considered a city at all.

After attacking, the Egyptian commander was shocked.

There are mountains of military supplies everywhere in the towns, with tens of thousands of tons of fuel loaded with iron barrels alone and thousands of tons of ammunition.

Although there had been information that Gu Saimai was the rear material storage and transportation center of the Israeli army, even Qi Kaiwei did not expect that so many materials were not transported to the front line in time.

The commander of the Egyptian army did not waste time. On the one hand, he ordered the troops to eliminate the remaining enemies. On the other hand, he ordered the destruction of all unusable ammunition and other supplies. On the other hand, he asked the tanks to fill the fuel tank. Finally, he ordered a fire to burn out all the fuel that could not be loaded and could not be used for the time being.

Obviously, the Egyptian commander did not intend to defend Gusaimai to the death.

To the west of him, there were at least 200,000 Israeli troops, and he had less than 5,000 people. Even if Gu Saimai is a military center, he may not be able to defend it. More importantly, Gu Saimai is surrounded by empty deserts, which have no value for guarding, and cannot be defended at all.

In this way, the combat materials can be destroyed so as not to fall into the hands of the enemy.

For the Israeli army, this was an absolute disaster, and it could even be said to be the last straw that crushed the Israeli army.
