Chapter 44: The Mystery of Jan Mayen Island

Although Bright also belonged to the captain of the armed merchant ship belonging to the Swedish Navy and there was little possibility of rebellion, Gerhart and Xu Mo still did not dare to send a signal to summon Vistalos immediately, but waited cautiously until dawn.

After dawn, Gerhardt asked everyone to climb up the height of the volcano and investigate the surrounding waters of JanMayen Island. After confirming that the Hell God was indeed not in the nearby waters, Frieza lit a bonfire and used the smoke to summon the Vistalos. This was also a signal to summon warships during the day that had been agreed with Hedram.

"His Excellency Gerhart, what are you looking for?" Xu Mo struggled to climb a stone platform on a high place.

This stone platform is located on the volcano on Yangmayan Island, about 100 meters away from the ground, not very high, but the terrain is very dangerous. The stone platform is a protruding part on a conical volcano. Seriously speaking, this protruding part is composed of two cliff stones. The one below is a small platform, and the one above is like a curved bird's beak, covering the platform below, and it is like a hawk's beak.

There is a small cave behind the platform, which can only enter one person in size, and it is a cave that must be crawled forward, so it cannot hide people at all. Because the platform is more prominent and has a very good view, it is almost possible to observe the sea surface of the Yangmayan Island waters close to 270 degrees.

"Alfred, I'm afraid this 'Eagle Beak' is one of the lookout posts set up by Hell God!" Gerhardt carefully checked the bonfire marks left on the platform.

"Well, there are almost no miscellaneous stones on the platform, and it must have been cleaned up. Although this small platform cannot stay for many people, it is easy to defend and difficult to attack, and there are also a few secret whistles that can be ambushed below. If the Hell God is still on Yangmayan Island, our operation was very dangerous last night. Even if we can pull out this secret whistle, it will definitely not stop them from sending a warning signal to the Hell God." Xu Mo nodded in agreement.

Other sailors found two other observation posts at the height of the volcano. These relatively flat platforms basically have some narrow volcanic caves next to them, but the terrain is not as good as this platform. In the place found by Gerhard, the Hell God set up three observation posts at the height of the volcano a few days ago. These three observation posts included the sea surface dozens of nautical miles near Yangmayan Island in the control range of the Hell God. Almost every point on the sea surface has two observation posts to see abnormal situations.

It seems that Clifford has also thought of the security of the lookout post, so he set up double insurance. From this point of view, Xu Mo and his team had the possibility of failure last night, and the possibility of exposure was almost 100%. The ambush plan of the North Sea lion waiting for it was free of charge.

Of course, the more detailed Clifford's arrangement was, the heavier the hearts of Geerhart and Xu Mo. What kind of accident caused Clifford to give up such a perfect ambush plan and leave Yangmayan Island, which was equivalent to making the North Sea lion give up the delicious food that had already been brought to his mouth.

Two hours after receiving the fireworks signal, the Vistalos finally arrived near the Yamayan Island. However, because Yamayan Island did not have a good harbor, they had to anchor on a sea surface in the northeast. Everyone on the boat took small boats to the island in batches.

Hedram and other officers were confused after learning about the situation on the island. Captain Bright, who slowly recovered from hunger and cold, began to recall in detail their experiences during this period and the information they obtained during their imprisonment.

It turned out that after receiving the order from His Majesty Gustav, they disguised themselves as pirates to hunt English whaling ships and exiled the English sailors to Norway. There was originally an armed merchant ship with them, and the two ships were cruising around the coast of Norway. However, after a period of time, Captain Bright felt that the two armed merchant ships were too inefficient to plunder together, so he crossed the Norwegian Sea alone and came to the near Yanmayan Island to hunt English whaling ships that replenish freshwater near the island.

The Hell God arrived at Janmayan Island two and a half days ago. Captain Bright did not expect that the Hell God did not look for pirates along the Norwegian coast, but was chased by the Vistalos all the way. He was careless and did not set up a lookout post. As a result, the armed merchant ship with less firepower and speed than Hell God was quickly sunk. Captain Bright swam on Janmayan Island with more than 20 crew members who escaped their lives by chance.

After sinking the armed merchant ship, the Hell God did not stay away from Yanmayan Island, but instead sent armed sailors to the island to set up a lookout post. During this period, the Swedish sailors led by Captain Bright again fought again. This time, except Captain Bright and another crew member, all the others were killed, and Captain Bright was also imprisoned on the Hell God.

Strangely, two days later, the Hell God actually gave up the ambush plan that was originally on Yanmayan Island and chose to continue northwards, and at the same time exiled Captain Bright and his two men on the island.

Captain Bright and his two men were imprisoned in the bottom cabin of the Hell God, so they didn't know what the Hell God had encountered during those two days and three nights. They only knew that the Hell God's sailors were very scared.

From Captain Bright's narrative, everyone got two messages. One was that Clifford chose to go north but did not choose to return. Obviously, Clifford was still looking for fighter planes and wanted to compete with Hedram. Captain Bright and the other was likely to have Clifford deliberately left them a microphone to convey the message. Another message was that there was an unknown danger on Jan Mayen Island.

However, in any case, they could not leave the island until the Vestalos had enough fresh water. At the same time, in order to prevent the Hell God from returning, they must also set up a lookout post on the island.

After discussing with his first mate and storm captain, Admiral Hedram decided to use the lookout location Clifford chose on the island. Those three locations were indeed very good, and they were condescending, not only could they monitor the sea surface, but also the movements on the island.

However, for the safety of the watchtower personnel, Hedram arranged five people at each post and asked them to fire a gun and warn them immediately if they encountered danger, and the sailors on the ship would rescue them as quickly as possible.

"His Excellency Alfred, what are you thinking?" Dinah walked onto the deck and saw Xu Mo standing on the side of the boat in a daze, so she stepped forward and greeted her.

"I was thinking about Captain Bright and the others!" Xu Mo said with a frown, "If they were telling the truth, then the sailors who stayed on Yangmayan Island in Hell should have encountered unknown dangers at night."

"Well, if it were during the day, the English had a large number of muskets and cannons, and it would be impossible for them to save their sailors! But what does this have to do with Captain Bright and the others?" Dinah asked strangely.

"You have to know that when we went to the island yesterday, it was also at night. Why did Captain Bright and us not encounter danger?" Xu Mo said in confusion. "In addition, there are two other points that puzzle me very much. In this era, the deck sailors on warships are not lacking in courage. But from Bright's story, the Englishman obviously did not lose many people, so why were they afraid to shake morale? And did Clifford really choose to give up such a perfect ambush plan just because of the death of a few lookouts?"

"Then why don't you remind Hedram and the others?" Dinah was shocked.

"Hedram and Gerhart are not fools. I can think of them, too. This is not a difficult question to speculate!" Xu Mo said lightly.

"Dan you want to..." Dinah's eyes flashed and she understood.

"Yes, the number of on-duty people on the deck will double tonight. Hedram will be in charge. Whether it is the danger on the island or Clifford's tricks, we will be on guard!" Xu Mo said calmly.

At night, after being rotated from the deck by Gerhardt, Xu Mo tossed and turned in the hammock and couldn't fall asleep. He kept thinking about the puzzle left by the Hell God in his mind. It was not until the second half of the night that Xu Mo fell asleep in a daze. The sound of the sea breeze whistled out of the boat was like the melodious tone of the Scottish bagpipe in his ears.

The next morning, Xu Mo woke up energetic again, which surprised him very much. He only slept for less than two hours last night. It seemed that the quality of the sleep this time was very high.

After arriving at the captain's room, Xu Mo found that all the officers on the ship had arrived. Surprisingly, it was calm last night and the officers on duty did not notice any accidents.

"Captain, the island's lookout post has sent an emergency message!" At this moment, a sailor hurriedly ran in from the door and said.

"Hell God has appeared?" Hedram lit up and stood up from his chair with a whimper.

"No, no, the lookout post asked the officers to be sent to the island immediately. They did not say the specific situation, but the signal was very hasty and seemed very nervous!" The sailor recalled and continued.

"I'll go and have a look!" Xu Mo stood up quietly, and at the same time gave Dina a wink.

"I'll go and have a look, maybe for some things, the power of the priest is even more indispensable!" Dinah immediately stood up at the same time with understanding.

"No, I will lead the team myself!" Hedram walked out of the captain's room with a serious expression.

Half an hour later, Hedram took Xu Mo and a well-equipped musket team to Yangmayan Island again.

"Ti...Admiral, he...they disappeared!" said a sailor at the lookout whistle in panic.

"Stand straight and report, Vikings!" Hedram said with a stern face.

"Yes, admiral, this morning, we found a group of brothers from the lookout ward disappeared!" The sailor slowly calmed down.

“Disappeared?”

After stepping onto the lookout, Hedram and the others finally understood why the sailor said that they had disappeared!
