Chapter Thirty-Eight: Stay

The big room of the tribe leader was very dark. Although the hall used by the leader for banquets and meetings was very wide, there were only a few braziers hanging on thick wooden pillars that emitted a faint light.

Avid smelled the strong smell of wine and meat, and he couldn't help but touch his stomach. There was no one around the large wooden table in the hall, and there was no sign of the tribe leader on the throne covered with bearskin in the front.

"Come in." A rough and thick bass sounded from the half-covered wooden door.

Avid took a deep breath, walked forward slowly, and pushed open the heavy mottled wooden door. A faint candlelight was lit in the room. With the slight candlelight, Avid saw the leader sitting in front of the table beside the bed, a person savoring the mellow wine.

After hearing the door ring, the tribe leader's sharp eyes, like an eagle, focused on Avid who had just entered the door through the darkness.

"Sit Avid. What made you hurried to meet me?" The tribal leader picked up a piece of salted fish from the plate and chewed it in his mouth.

Avid swallowed, sat on the low chair next to him, organized a speech in his mind, and then spoke: "Sir, I overheard some rumors when I was purchasing in Port Aberdoron in East Frisia this time."

"What kind of rumor is it that makes you, a always calm guy, so nervous now?" The tribe leader was a little surprised. He put down the fish strips in his hand, raised his head and looked at Avid carefully.

"Sir, do you remember the village of Folde by the Rhine?" The faint light of the candlelight shone on Avid's rosy face.

"Of course, except for the first time I went to rob the robbery two years ago, they were already very poor when they went there last year. To be honest, it really couldn't arouse my interest in visiting again," the tribe leader took a sip of the wine in his glass and waved to the curly-haired old man standing next to him, "Old Eric, pour him a glass of honey wine!"

"But leader, there seems to be some subtle changes in that poor place this year. I heard from the mouths of many travelers and taverns that the village of Fold seems to be blessed by their gods, and the cropping ratio of barley and oats can be estimated to reach 10 to 20... Oh, thank you!" After Avid said that, the curly old man handed him a glass of good honey wine.

"Are you kidding me? You know what the consequences of deceiving me." The tribe leader looked in disbelief and stared at Avid's eyes, as if he wanted to read something from his eyes.

"There is no lie. My leader, I can swore my arms with my arms!" Avid swore with a firm look on his face.

The tribal leader did not speak, and for a moment, the room fell into a dead silence.

"Well, Avid, although this sounds like a guy making up a story by the fire pit. You can tell me more about it now." The tribe leader rubbed his temples, constantly thinking about something in his mind.

...

As the days passed, as the plump wheat ears in the fields of Folder Village became more and more golden, the wooden fort in Folder Village was approaching the end of construction.

"Master, I guess the construction will be completed in this week." The stonemason Ryan looked at the drawings in his hand, then looked at the wooden fort in front of him, and nodded with satisfaction.

The arrow tower and the wooden door have been built. The city wall connecting the two is now building a cliff.

"Yes, the days of the Viking Xialiu are getting closer and closer. I really hope it can be completed soon." The fat man nodded, revealing a bit of worry between his eyebrows.

"Fatty, it's useless to be anxious. I'll go to the village now, you can supervise them!" Simon patted the fat man on the shoulder and walked towards the hillside.

"Prepare, let it go!" Before we could take a few steps, the voice of the hunter Bill came from a distance.

"It's okay, I've learned the basics, and the rest is to keep practicing." Looking at the arrows on the hay target opposite, Bill's mouth was filled with a faint smile.

In order to train more archers to welcome the Vikings' attacks, Simon selected eight smart guys from the freeminder who were willing to join the militia and the new militia slaves, and organized them into the archery team of Folder Village, and set up a temporary archery field in the open space next to the newly built wooden fort.

"Ah, Master, you are here!" Bill noticed Simon walking towards him, took off the fur hat from his head, and came forward.

"How are these guys training?" Simon looked at the new archers who kept archery shooting around him, and his movements were quite sensible.

"Master, they have mastered the most basic tricks, and the rest is practice day after day," Bill said slowly, stroking his love bow, "A person may have to fully master the skill of archery for the rest of his life."

"Indeed," Simon nodded in agreement, looking at a young man next to him who had just pulled an arrow out of the quiver, "Come on, shoot the head of that scarecrow, I'll see."

"Okay, OK, lord." The young man stuttered a little, his hands trembled and raised them, pulling the bow.

"Swoosh!"

An arrow shot rapidly at the scarecrow target fifty meters away, but inserted it into the soil next to the target.

"Oh, my master, please forgive me, I'm a little nervous." The young man blushed and lowered his head and touched the back of his head.

"In addition to practicing your archery, you also have to practice your mentality. If it's just your lord standing by your side watching you shoot archery, what should you do when you really go to the battlefield to shoot the Vikings?" Simon was not angry. He knew that newcomers need to go through hardships and growth.

"The master is right," Bill, who was watching with his hands in his arms, also spoke, "In a few days, you will be taken to the mountains and forests to hunt beasts. Although it is somewhat different from actual combat, you can sharpen your mentality."

………

In the golden wheat fields under the setting sun, in addition to the serfs at work, there is also a middle-aged man in clean loose robes singing loudly, praising this prosperous scene.

"Lord, my Lord, the holy traces of thy descending will no longer be hungry; Lord, my Lord, your people love you and bathe in your grace..."

The serfs who usually work in the fields and like to sing the most quietly listen to this beautiful rhythm, as if their souls were washed.

"Have you learned chants in the monastery?" Simon appeared behind Ludwig at some point.

"Of course, I used to sing chants every day when I was in the monastery, and this tune was simply carved into my bones." Ludwig nodded, breathing the fresh air with a slight smell of farmhouse fertilizer in a breeze.

"The Vikings are coming to plunder, and this place will become very dangerous. Are you sure you won't go to the next place?" Simon wondered why Ludwig did not leave the village of Fold with the passing caravan after healed a few weeks ago.

"This is indeed a place where God shows holy," Ludwig turned around and touched the thick and plump ears of wheat. "I have been to many places, and it is the first time I have seen such a plump barley. So I also believe that under God's blessing, the Vikings must have no way to take the wooden fort in the village of Fold."

"Ahh, you want to stay and witness the war, right?" Simon remembered that he had heard this guy say he liked to witness the cruel and bloody war.

"That's right. Think about how exciting the pagans attacked a village fort protected by God," Ludwig said with excitement. "Writing this battle into a widely circulated epic, I will boil my blood if I think about it!"

"Okay friend, since you insist," Simon smiled and shook his head, "You'll just protect yourself on the walls at that time."

"It is no exaggeration to say that even if I sacrifice my life in this war, I will never hesitate." Ludwig didn't care. In this way, although he did not like life in the monastery, it is undeniable that his study in the monastery made his faith extremely firm.

"May God be with you, my friend," Simon patted his shoulder, "I'm going to prepare a great gift for the Vikings now."

"What big gift? Are you planning to ask for peace?" Ludwig's face was full of surprise, and his big royal blue eyes were full of doubt.
