What is formlessness?
The 23rd volume of the "Nanben Mahapra Nirvana Sutra" says: There are no ten phases, such as color, sound, fragrance, taste, touch, birth, residence, extinction, male, and female.
Volume 22 says: If there is a good man or a good woman who hears the word and sentence of the Great Nirvana, he does not make a word appearance, does not make a sentence appearance, does not make a hearing appearance, does not make a Buddha appearance, or does not make a speech appearance, the meaning of this is called formless form, and he has attained the Anuttara Samyaksambodhi because of the formless form.
What do these two paragraphs mean?
Let me translate it for now. The first paragraph means that the so-called state of formlessness refers to not being bound by the five sensations used by humans to perceive the three-dimensional world (i.e., form, sound, fragrance, taste, and touch), as well as gender (i.e., male and female), and time dimensions (the three phases of birth, residence, and death are not simply corresponding to the future, present, and past; the birth phase has the meaning of from the future to the present, and the extinction phase has the meaning of from the present to the past, and can also be understood as the cycle of birth, old age, and death respectively).
The second paragraph says: After listening to these words in my scriptures, if you really understand, then you can ignore and abandon all the things I can express in words (this corresponds to the so-called "reason and the appearances" in Buddhist principles). If you understand this level, even if you have obtained "Anuttara Samyaksambodhi", that is, supreme wisdom and enlightenment.
From this name of "No Form" we can see that the formless cave of Xuanqi Sect is a place of enlightenment that "will restrict people's senses."
Of course, it is not as exaggerated as the "Huangquan Cave" in "The Spirit King". It limits you to no end, and you can still feel a little left in the "Flag of the Faceless Cave".
Huang Donglai went to the Danfang to receive "Guiyuan Lu (as mentioned in the previous article, eating one can ensure that you don't eat, drink, or sleep for seven days, but the quantity is limited, and it is usually only sent to the disciples who are in seclusion)", so the forty-nine days is easy to calculate. Every time he feels hungry and thirsty, it means that seven days have arrived. And so on, when he finishes taking the seven medicines he brought into the cave and feels hungry again, the face of the wall is over.
