Section VIII Light Industry

Zhao Gang's results in the bandit suppression this time were even more brilliant, but General Zeng Yun of Shengjing could not immediately ask for credit from the court. The other three bandit suppression troops colluded with the bandits to attack the Biangang Army. If this were reported, the emperor would definitely be furious. Not to mention promotion, even the black hats of the current ones would not be kept.

After thinking about it, I could only find a way to report the other three inspectors to "suppress the bandits bravely, unfortunately died in battle." As for why the three inspectors were killed together, I really didn't care.

About 10,000 Green Camp soldiers died, but they needed to be supplemented, but they had to hide the recruitment from the court, and they really couldn't do it. After thinking about it, they couldn't figure it out. Zhao Gang was ordered to return to Shengjing to report his duties, so Zeng Yun said this by the way, to see if he could solve it.

After hearing Zeng Yun's words, Zhao Gang pondered for a while before speaking:

"I don't know if the adults are satisfied with the position of Shengjing. If so, there is a way to be a low-level position; if you want to go to the next level, there is a way to be a low-level position."

Zeng Yun didn't expect Zhao Gang to say this, and hurriedly asked, "What should I do if I go to the next level?"

Zhao Gang looked around without saying a word. Zeng Yun waved his hand to let the servant retreat. Zhao Gang whispered when he saw only two people:

"If Lord Zeng wants to be the governor, he only needs to do one thing well."

"That thing?"

"May I know why Zhang Zhidong is the governor of the two lakes because of the broad business operations. Although one loss is the one, the more he loses, the bigger he will be. As long as he handles the same routine, the more he is, the more he is, the more he is, the more he is promoted. As long as he handles the position of Governor of Northeast China, it is not easy."

Zhao Gang paused, saw Zeng Yun listened completely, and knew that his words had worked. Then he said: "If you need workers to start an industry, we can use the name of recruiting workers to recruit soldiers."

Zeng Yun heard this and was very active, but he still had some concerns:

"You're right, but Shengjing doesn't have much money. I see that the Hanyang Iron Factory in Zhangzhi Cave costs millions of dollars, and our money is too different."

"Don't worry, you have to worry. Although the investment in steel plants is large, you can take it step by step. The first phase of the investment is 500,000 taels. In the future, sand can be built into a first-class steel plant. Light industry is small and profitable. We can supervise the commercial office. Not only does it take a slight expense, but we can also get the benefits to subsidize heavy industry."

Zeng Yun was thinking about it, but his subordinates had no knowledgeable people. After thinking about it, Zeng Yun said to Zhao Gang:

"Inspector Zhao, I think you are so talented. It is too aggrieved to be a inspector. It is better to be the general manager and handle Western Affairs matters."

Zhao Gang replied anxiously:

"Sir, a low-ranking martial artist, who is not talented but cannot take on this position. A few days ago, I heard that Zhang Jian temporarily lives in Dandong, and this talented person is sure to take on this position."

Everyone in the country knew about Zhang Jian’s reputation. Zeng Yun was overjoyed and asked someone to invite him quickly. He turned around and ordered Zhao Gang to go back to Liaoyang to recruit soldiers immediately, and asked quietly: "Inspector Zhao, I want to recommend you to serve as the Admiral of Shengjing. Do you think it's okay?"

Zhao Gang lowered his head and replied:

"Sir, I am humble and have a shallow qualification. I am already a blessing from the patrol inspection. How dare I get the greed of the river?"

Zeng Yun saw Zhao Gang say this and said in admiration:

"Then let you be wronged first and serve as the General Office of the Shengjing Regiment Training Group, and be responsible for recruiting soldiers this time. I will recommend you to be the Admiral of Shengjing in the future."

Zhao Gang did not refuse this time and accepted a new official position. Zeng Yun had already regarded Zhao Gang as his number one confidant, and made up his mind to let Zhao Gang take charge of military power for him. He talked to Zhao Gang for a while in the officialdom, and was a little tired. He yelled a few times and picked up the tea bowl. Zhao Gang hurriedly said goodbye and went out.

The second day after Zhang Jian arrived, Zeng Yun opened the main gate, and the governor and the prefect lined up in two rows at the gate, respectfully welcomed Zhang Jian into the government office. Zhang Jian had been dormant for ten years and was naturally grateful to Zeng Yun for such importance. He took on the important task of the General Office of the Westernization Affairs Office on the spot. In Zhang Jian's view, the funds required for textiles were less than those of other industries, and the production cycle was shorter, so he could get benefits faster. These favorable conditions, coupled with the official support, prompted Zhang Jian to let go!

In order to raise funds, Zhang Jian sold the Jilin Manufacturing Bureau, which spent more than 200,000 taels of silver every year, and finally sold it to Zhao Gang for 50,000 taels of silver. Zhao Gang got the Manufacturing Bureau and hurriedly developed new weapons without mentioning it.

The next day, Zhang Jian invited Shengjing's cloth merchant Fan Xiejun, Liu Weiyong, Chen Guixin, foreign company comprador Pan Maozhi, Guo Heqin, and gentry merchant Chen Shixun to his home to discuss the matter of fundraising and stock subscription.

Everyone agreed to use 100 yuan as a share, and determined the number of shares they were responsible for raising, and established the initial board of directors. These six people were called the "Six Directors of Tongsheng" in the early stage of the yarn mill. On the same day, they conducted on-site inspections and selected Huayuankouji, 15 miles north of Lushun City as the location of the factory, and determined that the factory was called "Dasheng Cotton Mill".

As soon as the banner of Dasheng Spin Mill was launched, the beginning was also very exciting. When everyone saw that the leading factory was a celebrity, they felt that it was fresh and at ease, so the people who invested in the stocks were very enthusiastic. Especially when farmers in Huayuankou heard that land could be invested, they all used the land to trade shares, saving a lot of land purchases by the factory. Zhang Jian also relied on the many acquaintances and friends, and wrote letters to promote the factory everywhere, and attracted many shareholders.

By this calculation, the funds needed to build a factory should be enough; however, the funds needed to purchase the machine were completely out of reach. I heard that Zhang Zhidong had purchased a set of machines from abroad in order to set up a yarn mill in Hubei, but no one took over. The machine had been in Shanghai for several weeks. Zhang Jian came to Zhang Zhidong, and Zhang Zhidong also bought Zhang Jian's face. He decided on the spot that if the Dasheng Yarn Factory Building in Lushun was completed first, he would give this set of machines to Dasheng Yarn Factory first.

After several twists and turns, the factory building of Dasheng Spinning Mill was finally completed and the textile machines were transported to the factory. On October 11, 1892, Dasheng Spinning Mill officially started construction and spun out the first strand of cotton yarn. Faced with the deafening sound of the machine, Zhang Jian, as the general manager, was so excited that he burst into tears. For this spinning Mill, Zhang Jian had suffered so much hardship and hardships!

He, a dignified "clear stream leader", had to run around to raise funds, look at others' cold faces, and listen to others' ridicule. Until the factory tested the machine a few days ago, there were still people who were bothering and chaotic, "When will the chimney in the yarn be high? Although the machine sounds, when will the yarn be spinning?" Now the chimney is smoking and the machine is producing yarn, can Zhang Jian shed tears of joy unhappy!

The directors also congratulated each other happily. Zhang Jian took this opportunity to gather everyone and discuss the matter of signing factory rules and contracts. He said: "Although I kicked it out, it is not possible to formally produce without rules. The state has national laws and family rules. If there is such a large factory, how can I be responsible for the director? This is the key to the success or failure of the career!" However, these people have no experience in running a factory and do not know how to make a factory appointment. Fortunately, Zhang Jian was prepared and proposed his own plan, from the responsibilities of the general director, the director of the department, the workshop deacon, to the management of each workshop, the accounting office, the assessment standards, the reward and punishment levels, and the reward and punishment levels.

The directors were convinced and unanimously decided to follow Zhang Jian's method. In order to promote new trends and break old customs, Zhang Jian also stipulated: "All deacons in the factory are generally called "Mr.", and they must not follow the old name of "Master."

In China at the end of the 19th century, Zhang Jian was able to formulate such a relatively complete and novel management system, which should be said to be very insightful. The implementation of these measures has played a good role in improving the management of enterprises, forming a new atmosphere of enterprises, and enhancing the competitiveness of enterprises.

Just in recent months, the market for cotton yarn has been optimistic and the selling price has risen several times. The continuous expansion of the funds of the yarn mill not only ensures the normal production of the factory, but also has a slight surplus. This year, due to the sharp rise in yarn prices, Dasheng yarn mill made a profit of more than 200,000 taels of silver.

The sad face on Zhang Jian's face finally disappeared.

On this day, Zhang Jian took the cotton yarn produced by the spoil mill to Shengjing to visit Zeng Yun, who was already General Shengtian at that time. The cotton yarn was tied with red silk cloth, and there were a total of two bundles. Zhang Jian smiled and said, "This is the cotton yarn produced by our Dasheng Spoil mill, and I will give it to the general as a souvenir."

Zeng Yun took the cotton yarn and praised him, "Okay, okay, I'll accept it! In the past, people called this kind of cotton yarn, and weaved it as a cloth, and now we can produce it ourselves. It's all up to your struggles. I want to remember you a great achievement!"

Zhang Jian said: "It is a little harder, but I 're asking for trouble for myself' and I can't blame others. Besides, for the sake of national economy and people's livelihood, even if I endure a little hardship, I feel happy!"

There is a saying that Zhang Jian did not say, that is, to raise funds for purchasing cotton, his wife even sold jewelry; and he had never spent a small amount of money in the factory for so long!

Zhang Jian was never satisfied with his existing career and was constantly expanding the scale of his career. In 1893, he used the profits of Dasheng Spinning Mill and the funds of new stocks to invest 630,000 taels of silver, added 34,000 spindles, and gradually updated the machinery and equipment used. In this way, by 1893, Dasheng Industrial Group had 1.5 million taels of silver and 57,000 spindles.

Zhang Jian also drove the development of other industries with the cotton textile industry as the center. In 1893, in order to solve the difficulties in repairing and manufacturing textile machinery and equipment, Zhang Jian jointly established Benxi Iron and Steel Plant with Zhao Gang, as well as Guangsheng Oil Pressing Company, Dalong Soap Company, Lusi Salt Company, Lushun Pencil Company, Lushun Dada Shipping Company, Lushun Fishery Company, etc. were also successively established. By the eve of the Sino-Japanese War of 1895, Zhang Jian had established twenty or thirty enterprises of various types, forming an enterprise group with the light textile industry as the core, and an emerging national capital group that dominated the northeast coastal areas.

In addition to starting an industry, Zhang Jian paid the most attention to education in his life. Because he believed that education is also an important means to save the country and the people. If the country is prosperous and strong, the people must master knowledge. Therefore, China must vigorously develop the education cause. He successively established Dasheng Shingle Mill employee colleges, textile colleges, railway schools, Lushun merchant and ship schools, etc., to cultivate various useful talents for the industry in the Northeast region. The Lushun Normal School founded by Zhang Jian in 1893 is the first normal school in my country's history.

Since then, he has founded the Women's Normal School, Chengxiang Primary School, Kindergarten, Blind and Dumb School, etc. In 1900, he merged the three specialties of textile, medicine and agriculture into the comprehensive Lushun University. At the same time, he also founded China's first museum - Lushun Museum, as well as libraries, meteorological stations, hospitals, parks, etc., making Lushun the largest harbor city in Asia.

However, Zhang Jian and Zhao Gang still lost the game. It was not until 1938 that the Dasheng Group, which Zhang Jian belonged to surpassed the Liaoyang Heavy Industry (126.8 billion) under Zhao Gang's total assets with a total of 135.9 billion yuan.
