Chapter 76 Chaplin's Difficulties

Grant Jean was on the side and took the lead in applause. Sparse applause rang out in the hall. Hayes walked up to the podium with the manuscript in his handwriting, his voice hoarse.

“Ladies and gentlemen, after the privileges granted by the State Legislature, the federal government, I announce my handling of the opinion on behalf of the 'American Producers and Publishers Association'.”

The hall was a bit quiet, and everyone held their breath and listened to the words below Hayes. Chani Barra, who was sitting next to me, was so nervous that she was about to faint.

"Including "The Crazy" produced by Fox, "The Crazy" produced by Warner, and Mutual Aid Company, First National Company, Lightning Company and other pornographic films are all banned!"

Hayes said firmly, gritted his teeth and looked at the bosses of major companies below, and said, "If there are similar movies in the future, all screenings will be banned!"

Wow! There was a noise in the hall.

Chani Barra's body softened and slid under the chair.

Praise, opposition, and insults came one after another.

"Mr. Hayes, I protest! I am protesting on behalf of the company that was listed on the banned screening list! This is a trampling on freedom! This is the most authoritarian thing that happened in the United States! Why do we say that our movie is a porn movie, and "Lust and Caution" is an art movie!? There are more shots in it than we have revealed!" Fox stood up suddenly, waved his hand and shouted loudly.

"Well said it! We protest this savage and unreasonable approach!" Sam Warner, Charles Rey and others stood up one after another.

As they emerged, a large number of small companies came out to protest. At the same time, many people, especially those from religious circles and social organizations, began to refute their words, and the scene suddenly became chaotic.

William Hayes stood on the stage, holding the microphone in his hand, and his facial expression. He stared at Fox and others, his eyes cold, and he kept staring for more than ten minutes until the group gradually became quiet.

"Gentlemen, have you finished speaking?!" Hays gave Fox and others a vicious look, and then slapped the podium with a snap: "Tell you, my decision today is the decision of the federal government. Whether it is a movie giant or a small company boss, I welcome it. If it is not executed, I will take back your business license and forcefully close the company!"

Hayes yelled, Fox and others sat on the chair limply.

Hayes was so tough that he brought out the federal government, which means he had enough power. He had fought with him head-on, and he was the one who suffered the loss in the end. He weighed the interests and did not destroy his company for a movie.

The hall suddenly became quiet. Everyone looked at Hayes with a complicated expression.

Seeing that no one was protesting, Hayes raised his eyebrows and said, "There is another thing, that is, tonight, we will discuss a preliminary bill to make a list of possible bad problems in the movie, and will be implemented by the association."

Wow! People are talking about it.

"Mr. Hayes, we don't understand what this bill is about?!" Adolf Chuck stood up.

Marskolov, Lemmer, and Aikent all followed. Although these people usually had sex with each other, the bill proposed by Hayes would have a direct impact on the film industry. It can be said that the terms inside will definitely restrict the content of the movie, which is a major event related to development.

"You don't understand, right?? Okay, I've listed some points. You can see if you have any supplements. You can bring them up!" Hayes waved to the people next to him, and the people pulled out a huge piece of white paper with a few words written in bold.

"One, no immoral sexual relations shall be expressed.

Second, no nude shots that are not artistic and have nothing to do with the theme of the movie are allowed to appear purely to attract the audience's sensory stimulation.

Third, it is not allowed to express the gender relationship between whites and blacks.

4. Transitional violence and blasphemy words and deeds are not allowed.

5. Malicious drug trafficking and drug use are not allowed.

Films that violate the terms will be subject to heavy fines or banned screenings."

These five regulations shocked everyone.

"Mr. Hayes, as a director, I protest! Such regulations are a trampling on our director's freedom! It is a trampling on art!" Senate, Liu Bieqian, Strauheng and others expressed their dissatisfaction as representatives of the directors.

Looking at these five terms, I was also extremely shocked.

The five listed above are basically the main content of the Hays Code formulated in 1930 in history. They were actually picked up by Hays five years in advance. Is it really because of me that history has changed?!

Objectively speaking, the five regulations formulated by Heidi are intended to regulate film creation and purify the screen, and the purpose is good, but the things prohibited by these five regulations have great uncertainty. The quality of a movie is in the hands of the association. In this way, no one will risk heavy punishment to carry out related creations. In other words, even some excellent works of art are likely to be regarded as poisonous weeds. In the long run, there will only be one result. The areas involved in the terms will be called a film restricted area, and this is definitely not a good thing for film creators.

But in the present situation, from the perspective of social responsibility, there is no reason to refute it.

"Gentlemen, I have not trampled on your creative freedom, the United States has not trampled on your artistic freedom, and you have many good and excellent film themes. Why do you make shameful movies like "Desire" and "Desire"? Are you willing to let your children see such movies? In other words, there is nothing wrong with these prohibited content, and it does not mean that as long as it is related, we welcome movies like Andrei Corleon's "Lust and Caution", but you can tell your conscience that your movies are comparable to "Lust and Caution"?!"

Hayes was aggressive and looked at these yelling directors, his eyes blew fire.

"Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the religious community, I welcome and support Mr. Hayes's opinions!" Bishop Frankenstein stood up and expressed his opinion.

Then the mayor and the speaker of Los Angeles came forward to express their support.

Religious representatives and social organization representatives from the other two districts also responded.

The arrogance of Senate and others was immediately suppressed.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the reason why things that are so difficult to deal with today is because of Andre Corleon's "Lust and Caution", so why don't we listen to his opinions?!"

At the time of the deadlock, a voice that sounded extremely contagious came from not far away from me, and everyone's eyes suddenly turned to this side.

Charlie Chaplin!

He looked at me with a smile, his eyes drifted, and a sneer on the corner of his mouth made me cold.

"It's a bitch! Isn't it sincere to call my name at this time to make me a public enemy?" Looking at him, I cursed in my heart.

At this time, two major forces confronted each other. If I said I would support Hayes, I would definitely offend the entire Hollywood film industry, but if I expressed my objections, I would die even worse. When the "Hays Code" was promulgated in 1930, a large number of people stood up to oppose it. As a result, the "Hays Office" was established. The code was implemented until 1966. Those who had raised objections at the time were later worn by Hayes to varying degrees.

Chaplin's move was really fierce and pushed me to the forefront.

"We are right, we need to listen to Mr. Corleon's opinion!"

"right!"

Representatives of the film industry, religious industry, social organization and media representatives all asked me to express my opinions.

"Mr. Corleon, then I'll invite you to the podium." Hayes smiled at me and pointed to the podium.

I cursed Chaplin inwardly, and had to stand up and walk to the podium under the gaze of everyone.

This section of the road is only a few dozen meters, but I was sweating all over my head.

Chaplin, Chaplin, you are too despicable!

When I arrived at the podium, facing the quiet faces below the stage, I was immediately confused. Hays looked at me with a smile on his face, and it was obvious that he had a good impression of me. If I opposed him, it would be like slapping him in public, and I would not be able to take it away from now on.

In the audience, Marskolov, Lemmer and other people in the film industry were waiting for me to respond with hope. If I stood on Hayes' side, I would be the target of the crowd in Hollywood from then on.

what to do!?

I stood on the stage for less than five minutes and couldn't say a word.
