Chapter 68: Half-patent of sound film

Regarding this patent, the bosses of those big companies later suffered a bitter fruit. After the audio films made by Warner were greatly welcomed by the audience, they discovered the benefits of this technology and all extended olive branches to Western Electric companies. However, Western Electric companies offered extremely strict conditions on them because of their patent rights to this technology, and most companies could only accept it. Because of the use of this technology, Wall Street consortiums saw the huge benefits created by audio films, so they injected funds into Hollywood. The radio company under the Rockefeller consortium later developed a "Fourto-style" audio film machine. For this reason, they set up a new company in Hollywood in 1928. This company merged Mutual Aid Company, Triangle Film Company, EMI Film Company, and some operating companies, radio companies, and named it "Leodianhua Film Company", becoming one of the five major film companies in Hollywood.

Of course it's just a later story.

However, it can be seen that the successful development of this technology has greatly changed the appearance of Hollywood movies and has far-reaching significance.

"What are you going to do, Mr. Hawthorne?" I asked.

Mr. Hawthorne sighed and said, "I haven't said that Warner now, so I'll talk to them later."

After hearing what he said, my feet slipped and almost fell down.

It’s not such a coincidence!? If this winter melon and Warner were matched together, wouldn’t it be a bad thing! Historically, Warner Brothers fell in love with this technology at first sight!

No! Hawthorne can't let the people from Warner!

"Mr. Hawthorne, that's right. I'm very interested in your technology. Can we talk about it in detail at my company?" I wanted to get Hawthorne away from this place as soon as possible. If he saw Jack Warner or Sam Warner, DreamWorks would not be as good as others in any aspect. Hawthorne must have been involved in Warner's arms, then I would have no chance.

"Really?! Mr. Corleon is really interested in our technology?!" Hawthorne is now an ugly duckling who is ignored. He was very happy to see that I was so interested.

"Of course! Mr. Hawthorne, let's talk to DreamWorks."

"Okay, OK!" Hawthorne nodded and agreed.

We hurriedly left the theater and took a taxi back to the company. When we arrived at the office, Hawthorne and I talked in detail about their audio film technology.

As I expected, the audio film invented by Western Electric Company uses a "wax plate sound" method. The so-called "wax plate sound" means that the sound is burning on the turntable during shooting and playing it synchronously with the film during screening. "Vitafeng" uses 331/3 turns per second to synchronize the sound and picture of the movie, which is basically consistent with what I know in history. However, Hawthorne told me that this technology is not very perfect at present. If it is to be applied to the movie, it will probably take less than half a year of research.

Objectively speaking, compared to the commonly used "on-film voice" that was later commonly used, "wapan voice" has many technical shortcomings. The biggest problem is that when the screening is performed, the records and pictures are sometimes out of sync, the dialogue is inconsistent with the characters' mouth, and sometimes women's voices will occur. But no matter what, it is not a simple thing to invent this technology at this time. It is the result of the struggle of many filmmakers for 30 years since the birth of the movie. As for the fact that it will take some time before actual use, it is understandable. Technology cannot be solved overnight.

Hawthorne and I talked for four or five hours, from the history of audio film technology to "vita style", from wireless telegraph to transistors, from silent movies to audio films, Hawthorne was basically conquered by my endless explanations, especially some of my views and insights, which benefited him very much.

At my suggestion, Hawthorne agreed to sign a contract with me on behalf of Western Electric. The main content of this contract was that Western Electric agreed to cooperate with DreamWorks to provide us with various equipment. At the same time, I obtained half of the ownership of the patent for $200,000 (actually I would rather buy it all, but Hawthorne said their company would not agree).

With this contract, not only will DreamWorks use this technology to make movies in the future without paying the corresponding patent fees, but I will also have half of the profits obtained by Western Electric Company due to this technology.

Hawthorne obviously did not expect that this technology that seemed to be ignored by me in his opinion was so popular, and he even bought half of the patent for a high price of 200,000 US dollars. After signing the contract, he was so happy that his hands were shaking with the contract.

Although I am calm on the surface, my heart is also turbulent. Be good, think about it. In a while, 90% of Hollywood's movies will be audio films, and half of the related patent fees will be mine! At that time, you will be ruthless in counting the money.

After seeing Hawthorne go, Gans and the fat man almost ate me, and the two guys are almost welcoming the throne with armed forces.

"Boss, is it easy for us to get the money? It takes less than a year for you to spend this, so we have to sleep on the road!"

"Boss, I won't say what kind of subtitle technology you spent tens of thousands of yuan last time to buy Shanlige Company, but today I will say a few words no matter what. In my opinion, the technology of audio movies is better than that subtitle technology, but you can get 200,000 yuan at one time, which is too generous! And I only bought half a patent!"

The two of them hummed and felt extremely distressed about the 200,000 that Hawthorne took away.

"Why, rebellion!? It's just 200,000 yuan. What's the point of being fussy? I'm reluctant to spend money. How can I make money? You two are just waiting to count the money!" I hummed a small song and went downstairs to take a shower.

Fatty and Gans were behind me, and they almost chopped me up with a knife.

In the second half of October, Hollywood basically passed the lively screenings of "Gold Switch" and "Friend Swap". Dimil earned MGM no less than $700,000 because of "Friend Swap", while Chaplin's "Gold Swap" was both acclaimed and a hit box office, and it is said that it made more than 1.1 million in just two weeks. This time, Lianmei was proud.

However, these have little to do with DreamWorks. Because of the great success of "Gold Rush", Stenberg was extremely depressed. This guy basically greeted Chaplin's family members every day. However, because of this, Stenberg worked harder to film "People Call for Help", spending all day in the shooting venue, and the script was changed again and again.

I originally planned to ignore his movie, but because the movie uses special pressurized subtitles film produced by Sanlige Company, many of the original scene shots need to be modified. I was worried that Stenberg would make mistakes, so I basically followed the inspection at any time.

The script was modified by Stenborough and I. After the modification, the script not only has the style of Stenborough, but also has some of my techniques. Because it uses pressurized subtitles, I specially arranged a lot of scenes to promote the plot of the story with dialogue. When shooting, I paid attention to portraying the actor's facial expressions. Under my suggestion, the film adopts a three-parameter structure, and the three paragraphs exist independently and blended into one at the end of the film. In this regard, Griffith is an expert and he also put forward a lot of wonderful suggestions.

As the saying goes, everyone is getting fire and flames are high, and with the help of the whole group, the filming of "People Who Seek Help" has been carried out in a solid manner.

We are waiting for the day that shakes Hollywood again.
