Chapter 16 Extras

After a busy morning, I was happy and sad. What I was happy about is that the actors nowadays are very simple (maybe it has something to do with them not being washed by the lights and wine). They would not use tricks to help themselves become famous like later actors. They just stood honestly in front of you and performed according to what you said. What I was worried about is that all the actors all had a distinct stage performance style. When they watched them perform, you would feel that they were acting in dramas, not movies.

This is also the performance style of the entire Hollywood during this period.

They are a little pretentious and deliberately trying to control themselves. They feel that they are performing, rather than blending with the role they want to play from the bottom of their hearts. They don’t know how to perform life in its original form.

So, in the morning, I only selected one-quarter of the actors, and as for the candidates for the heroine, I didn't like any of them.

"Gans, if you go to the gate, you will post another notice, saying that our recruitment scope will be expanded, and even people who are not from actors can come and apply." I took a bite of bread and shouted to Gans.

The three guys immediately widened their eyes at me.

"Chairman, I have never heard of ordinary people who can act in movies!" James looked confused.

Gans and Fatty also had the same idea.

I pointed to the crowd in front of me and said, "Look at these actors, they are all stage performance exercises. As for movies, there is no big deal, just a direct silhouette of life. But now everyone is sitting in the cinema, what are you seeing? It is either a fake western film or a stage play that is brought to the screen under the name of a movie. The actors' performances are too far from life. The actors I want to choose are those who can meet after entering the movies, and after walking on the street outside the cinema, so that their performances can completely conquer them from the bottom of their hearts, making them feel that they are not watching a movie, but living with the people in the movies, so that the audience can cry and laugh with them, do you understand?"

Although the three of them didn't understand what I said very well, they felt that what I said made some sense, so they worked hard to cooperate.

After Gans's notice was posted, the entire Harvey Street was sensational. They had been in Hollywood for so long and had never heard of any director recruiting ordinary people. So those homeless people on the street, maids in the store, and traffic co-sponsors all kinds of people flocked to the door of DreamWorks. Since the director's personality is too strange, he might be attracted to him.

The team that was recruiting increased by one times. Gans even shook his head and told me that everyone in Harvey Street probably came to apply.

"Andre, you're making a big noise. We'll probably be on the front page of the Hollywood Times tomorrow morning." Gans said with a smile.

If it really makes the headlines, that would be great, this is free publicity.

I understand more and more that it is not easy to choose actors. One person after another swipes past you, and all kinds of faces, and in the end, it turns out to be the same blurry expression in my eyes.

"James, how many have we recruited?" I rubbed my eyes and asked James.

"12, which is still quite different from the total number of 40 people." James looked at his notepad.

I looked up at the sky and it was already three or four o'clock in the afternoon. It seemed that the job of recruiting actors was impossible to complete today.

I stood up, walked into the crowd, and shouted loudly: "Now listen to my command, everyone is divided into two teams. The actors were originally standing on the right, and those who were not actors stood on the left."

When the crowd heard my words, they responded quickly and stood out from two queues.

"Okay, the queue on the right is disbanded! The queue on the left is staying!" I shouted loudly.

Wow! There was a huge discussion in the crowd.

Has anyone seen the full-time actors being sent to select the directors who are ordinary people!?

Not only those actors, but even Gans and the others were completely stunned.

I returned to my seat and continued to choose without caring about the eyes of the three guys.

I think I have to choose a different way. I will look for the same profession from the crowd for the actors who need a career in the movie. They perform what they usually do, so they will definitely not be able to behave.

"Next!" Berg shouted beside me. An old man with worn-out clothes and gray beard stood in front of me, his eyes were cloudy and his movements were slow. People around him laughed at him, saying that such a dead old man actually wanted to make a movie. They laughed at him and mocked him, and a few people even whistled at him.

"Boss, do you want to PASS directly?" Berg whispered to my ear.

I ignored him, but turned my attention to the old man. It can be seen that he had lost hope, had no status, no respect, and even had no last respect for a person.

"Old man, what's the name?" I smiled.

The old man took off the torn hat on his head and bowed respectfully to me. His white hair fluttered in the wind in a mess, making my heart feel sad.

This is Hollywood, this is Hollywood, which makes people's eyes full of joy and beauty. People have seen celebrities and jewelry, but how many people have seen these people at the bottom of life!? Has anyone seen them working hard for a piece of bread, and has anyone seen them sob alone in a dilapidated corner late at night?!

"Hemingway, Gith; Haydn." The old man tried hard to squeeze a smile at me.

"What are you doing now?" I asked.

"Mr. Corleon, I am the cemetery guardian. I have been working for almost 30 years. I am 68 years old this year." Hemingway replied respectfully.

"The director lies, he is already 76 years old this year!" A sharp voice came from the crowd, and then burst into laughter.

The old man's head was sweating and he smiled awkwardly at me with embarrassment: "Mr. Corleon, I'm 76. I didn't mean to lie to you, but, just..." The old man's eyes became wet: "It's just that the cemetery thought I was too old to fire me. If I couldn't find a job again, I would starve to death."

The old man became sadder the more he spoke. He held the worn hat in his hand tightly, bowed to me again, lowered his head and turned away from the crowd.

He felt that at his age, society had abandoned him, and no one was willing to pay for such a person who was hard to even walk.

"Mr. Haydn, wait a moment." I stood up and walked to him.

The old man looked at me in confusion, wiped away the tears from the corners of his eyes, and said softly: "Mr. Corleon, you..."

I smiled and patted his shoulder and said, "I went to work in the company the day after tomorrow, and you were admitted to us."

The old man opened his mouth, whose teeth were almost falling out, stared at me blankly, unable to say a word.

I took out dozens of dollars from my pocket and stuffed it into his hands, whispering: "First find a place to eat your stomach, then have a safe sleep, you are going to be on the movie."

Gis held my money and cried loudly. Before stepping into this gate, he believed that he might not be able to survive this winter. He had seen many people like him who were old and lacking in the snow because of hunger and cold. They died like dogs and were transported away by garbage trucks. But now, the young man in front of him not only gave him a job, but also said he wanted to make himself appear in the movie!

Gith burst into tears, crying and bowed to me constantly, and then stuffed the dozens of dollars into my hands: "Mr. Corleon, I'll be content to give me a bite of food, how can I still ask for your money!" He pointed to the company's door: "I think the company has no gatekeeper, and I have no place to go. If you allow it, I'll take care of you. Don't worry, I've been watching the door for decades and there will be no mistakes."

"Okay, but you have to remember that from now on, you will be a member of our DreamWorks, a concierge and an actor." I said to him with a smile.

"Okay!" Gise burst into tears and laughed, walked towards our concierge and packed up his things.
