Chapter 4 Our First Movie

Westerns also account for a large proportion of these movies. Since director Porter ranked the first western film "The Train Robbery" in 1903, this kind of film of police catching thieves and soldiers catching robbers has become more and more popular. Berger's father, the fat Puman, has never been tired of watching westerns. Now, westerns have added elements such as wilderness, carriages, revolvers, and wide-brimmed hats to later Western films. Especially last year, in 1924, the great success of James; Cruz's "Cargoyle" and John; Ford's "Iron Horse" has made Westerns the only film that can resist the horizontal line of comedy films. Ford's "Iron Horse" earned $2 million with an investment of $280,000, which made the film company BFI (a British company) make a fortune, and Ford himself became famous.

However, whether it is comedy or western film, in my master's degree in film studies from the 21st world, the movies at this time were still very rough, the story was simple and the plot was single, and the use of the shots seemed very dull. Parallel editing was first applied, and close-ups appeared very few, and the characters were seriously stereotyped, but a large number of loyal audiences had been cultivated.

"Andre, these movies were your favorites in the past, so why don't you watch them directly today?" Gans put a fried chicken nugget into his mouth and stared at the screen and said carelessly.

"It's not good-looking!" I shook my head.

Hearing my words, the two guys took their eyes off the screen at the same time and looked at me like a monster. Berg opened his eyes wide and shouted, "Today is the sun coming out from the west?! Who is yelling that Potter is his idol all day long, and one day he will also make a movie like "Iron Horse"?! Not good?! You actually say that your favorite movie is not good?!"

Looking at the expressions of the two, I couldn't help but get to know the guy named Andre again. (I actually found Ford's "Iron Horse" among so many bad movies, which shows that he still has some movie appreciation ability.)

"This, this must surpass it, right? How can you make progress if you don't surpass the movie?" I could only talk to them. The two of them nodded repeatedly when they heard it. Berg gave me a thumbs up: "It turns out to be a director, and this is said with great utmost level."

"Oh, it would be great if we could make such a movie. At that time, we would be sluggish in counting money and we would feel sore in our arms, that would be life!" Gans's eyes were blurred and he had infinite longing for his imagination.

Berg, who was beside him, also looked reverie.

Gans's words touched my heartstrings intentionally or unintentionally. Why can't we make movies? After all, I am a master's degree in film studies. I have been working in the film industry for several years and have a strong foundation in film theory (compared with the directors at this time.), and the most important thing is that many famous movie classics in the history of film have not been produced at this time. No matter how stupid I am, I can still do it by copying the original class!

"Gans, how much does it cost to make a normal movie now?" Gans is much more familiar with this thing than Berger and I.

Gans glanced at me and said, "The cost of ordinary movies is around 200,000 US dollars, and there are high-cost movies with one or two million."

"So much?" I suddenly felt a basin of cold water pouring down, $200,000. Good, my father's current assets are probably only $100,000 to be charged to death, which is not enough.

"This is not the cost of printing posters!? In addition, the other tiny amount of money is not a decimal. What's wrong, big director, do you want to make a movie?" Gans laughed.

"How much is the lowest movie cost?" I was still a little unwilling to give up and asked to the end.

Seeing that I was serious, Gans also restrained his original casual expression and turned around to look at me and said seriously: "Boss, don't you really want to make a movie, right?"

I stared into his eyes, silent.

"I'm afraid of you!" Gans shook his head and said, "It's not clear that low-cost movies are available, tens of thousands, thousands or even hundreds of dollars. Last time, a small Paramount record spent more than 1,000 yuan to make a movie, but it can only be played for yourself. If you don't like those film companies and don't have movies to show, it's just something you can entertain yourself. Boss, this risk is very high."

After hearing Gans' words, I suddenly felt a little energetic. According to what Gans said, it is not a lot to shoot low-cost movies. If we shoot better, it is not impossible. Although my father has no money, he can get a 10,000-10,000 yuan from him. But my father doesn't give it. Isn't there any Berg? His family is richer than my family, and it shouldn't be a big problem to get tens of thousands of yuan. As for Gans, basically, don't think about it. Their family is so poor that they can't squeeze out the oil. As for the shooting cost, I will come to the director. Through the past few days of getting along, I found that Berg's photography level is still okay. With me, he is okay as a photographer. The remaining expenses are actors and films. We don't have the money to hire big names, but the little shrimps in Hollywood who are looking forward to becoming famous are grabbing a lot. I ask for some estimates that they have no name.

It only costs a few thousand yuan to charge, and film may be the most expensive. Generally, movies are shot with 35mm film. We are more frugal, shooting with 16mm. A 60-minute movie is spent on film at most 10,000 or 20,000 yuan. As for equipment, we can rent it, and we can still afford it for dozens of dollars a day. The rest is publicity. Now the most common way for major companies to promote is to print posters on the street, and we can print less, but I have a better idea. As for the screening issue, we can now show the movies in our cinema, and then let my father invite some of the young leaders of big companies to watch. With his relationship with Warner, I should be able to invite some. I am definitely confident that those little leaders will watch our movies at a glance, otherwise my master's degree in movies would be in vain.

After counting this, our total cost of a movie is about 40,000 US dollars. Although it is incomparable to those that cost hundreds of thousands of millions, the quality should be reasonable.

I talked about this idea to Gans and Berg, and I was incited by the two of them to be enthusiastic. After all, we have been studying for so long and making our own movie is definitely everyone's dream. Besides, Gans and Berg have never had a good impression of the men of those big companies in Hollywood. What else can you be happier than working for yourself?

"I think this idea is good, very good, but we have the money..." The Gans man was poor and had a short ambition. As soon as the plan was implemented, it poked his scar.

Berg and I looked at each other, then smiled and said to Gans, "You don't have to worry about the money. Even if you stuffed it into the oil press, you can't squeeze out much oil. Berg and I will solve it. You are responsible for all the errands and publicity work except shooting. But if this ticket is done, we three will share the blessing."

Gans smiled layer by layer on his face and kept flattering Berg and me: "This relationship is good, boss, fat man, I will keep my life in your hands! I don't ask for much of this, there are villas, cars, high-end ones, housekeepers, and dozens of beautiful girls."
