Chapter 7 Javelin and Food

The task assigned to Davers was to go to the battlefield to pick up the spears, shields and even carriages discarded by both sides, as wood, to cook meat. For this purpose, they were also assigned a ox cart.

The battlefield was not far from the camp. Yesterday, the cavalry went out to reconnaise and found that the Persian king's army had left, so they dared to send soldiers to clean the battlefield. However, there were many soldiers sent out, mainly because they were afraid of being raided by Persian cavalry.

Before he arrived at the battlefield, Davers saw the sky ahead from afar, as if it was a piece of black, with countless crows hovering, and the harsh screams made him feel palpitations!

Then, on the grass several miles acres, there were layers of human corpses and horse corpses. The bodies were densely filled with flies and insects, and even wild wolves and wild leopards were gnawing on the bones. They didn't hide when they saw people coming. They just looked at them from afar, and their eyes were shining with cold light...

Every time Davers took a step, he raised a layer of flies, buzzed, and rushed straight into his face, unable to disperse.

Davers' face was pale and felt her whole stomach churning.

"Davs, you've experienced this kind of scene many times, why do you feel uncomfortable?!" Martonis's words of concern were filled with joy. Because he felt that although Davers had changed, there were still places that needed his care.

"I'm fine!......drip..." Davers swallowed hard. Memory is memory. After all, it was the first time that a modern man, a modern person, witnessed this bloody battlefield of killing with his own eyes. But he knew in his heart: in this chaotic world, such scenes will appear in front of him again and again in the future, and he must adapt!

He let go of his hand covering his nose, forcibly endured the pungent stench, picked up the corpse on the ground, pulled out the shield pressed down, quickly slapped off the maggots on it, and threw it onto the ox cart.

When he first arrived at the battlefield, the towed ox could not tolerate this terrifying environment. He was always restless and almost injured Matonis. However, Davers came up with an idea and covered his eyes with linen, so it became much quieter.

Everyone was busy for a long time, the ox cart was full, and each of them even carried a bundle.

"Where is Davers?" Matonis found that one person was missing in the team.

"Then!" Olivers pointed not far away: Davers was throwing a javelin at a vulture pecking at a corpse, but was quickly dodged by the seemingly clumsy vulture.

"It seems that he is preparing to participate in the Javelin competition in Olympia!" Olivers said jokingly.

"Shut up!" Martonis glared at him and walked towards Davers.

Seeing his arrival, Davers picked up a javelin from the ground quite naturally. Now, he has begun to adapt to this harsh environment.

"Matonis, how many of our archers are there?" Davers asked, stroking the sharp spearhead with his hands.

Martonis is completely unfamiliar with this issue, but fortunately there is the careful Giogris: "Archester?...I remember that only Clearkus has nearly 300 Cretan archers under him...If you include the light shield soldiers who can throw javelins... Well, all... there may be... three thousand people."

"Three thousand people. How many light shield soldiers are there?" Davers asked.

"There are about four hundred people..."

"Matonis, don't burn the javelin. It's a pity. It's better for each of us to equip one or two javelins. What do you think?" Davers thought for a while and said

Before Martonis answered, Olivers said first: "We are heavy infantry!"

"But when facing Persian cavalry, our heavy infantry could not get close to them, so they could only avoid the bows and javelins they shot!" Davers made this proposal because the regret was left in the memory of this body. When collecting this wooden weapon, he suddenly had this inspiration because he knew that another world-famous Roman heavy infantry in history not only had amazing close combat, but their javelin throwing was also terrifying, so he made this proposal.

"There are enough cavalry there," Olivers said.

Davers smiled: "It's better to rely on yourself than to rely on others."

"Is this the 'oracle' that Hades gave you?" Giogris asked anxiously.

Davers smiled but didn't answer.

"I think this idea is good. Go back and talk to Hilos." Martonis took the javelin in Davers's hand, turned around, and suddenly threw it out. The vulture that was still pecking at him fell to the ground.

"But, Davers, your javelin technique needs to be learned well!" Martonis said proudly.

Greek heavy infantry does not use javelins only a matter of tradition and habit, but the Greeks' javelin skills are not bad, and they are even top in the Mediterranean region, because javelins are one of the pentathlons of the Olympian Games, and Greek boys have started training these in the arena since they were young.

"That's great! Not only are there beef and mutton at noon, but also bird meat!"

"I heard that the meat of this bird cannot be eaten because it comes from hell..."

In the camp, the livestock had been slaughtered, the meat had been cut, placed in a clay pot, filled with water, and placed on a temporary earthen stove, everything was ready.

Everyone pulled back their weapons, chopped them up, and cooked the meat.

Martonis told Hilos about Davers's idea.

Since he was the "God's Fellows", Hilos thought carefully and felt that this idea was acceptable: the javelin was not heavy, and a heavy infantry carrying two javelins was completely acceptable. So he went to Antonios, hoping to get support.

Antonios called the other nine squad leaders over, wanting to hear their thoughts first. Some of the squad leaders agreed, while others opposed. Opponents adhered to the Greek tradition of heavy infantry and believed that Menon already had 500 light shield soldiers, and it was completely unnecessary to let heavy infantry take javelins; those who agreed believed that although there were 500 light shield soldiers in the camp, they were all Thracians, and the two sides did not cooperate very well. The heavy infantry owned javelins, and at least they could force Persian cavalry to not get too close to them to reduce casualties. The two sides were quarreled, and Antonios could not make a decision, so he had to say: As long as it did not affect the combat, each team decided on its own whether to carry javelins.

Hilos came back happily and was about to talk to Davers, but found a group of people staring at the churning pieces of meat in the clay pot, but Davers was missing.

"Where is Davers?"

"I said I was going to see the internal organs of the animals that were thrown away... and I said what was the waste..."

Just as everyone was puzzled, they saw Davers walking over with a bloody intestine with a spear.

"Hey, take this smelly thing away! It affects our appetite!" Everyone covered their noses and shouted.

Davers ignored it and said loudly: "I saw a large number of cattle and sheep intestines discarded in the baggage camp and allowed the birds and wild dogs to take them away. This is a waste! Don't forget that we were so hungry that we wanted to eat our hands two days ago! In the next few days, whether it is fighting or marching, we may still be hungry. We should pick up these things and stock up to prevent us from eating them when this happens again!"

"Can those things be eaten?" asked a strong soldier.

Davers remembered that his name was Martius, a soldier living in another tent. His question was exactly what everyone wanted to ask. The Greeks mainly eat grains and eat very little meat. This time they went deep into Persia and started to eat meat frequently due to logistical supply. The animals' internal organs not only smell fishy, but also tasted very fishy when there was a lack of spices and cooking methods. Therefore, apart from using it for divination, few people would try to eat it, and even think that eating it would cause poisoning.

"Of course you can eat it! These things are not only very pragmatic... not only fill our stomachs, but also improve our bodies. For example, they can make us see more clearly at night." Davers answered affirmatively.

"Really?! That's great!" Martonis said happily.

Five people in the other tent looked suspicious.
