Chapter 12 Miron's Counterattack

Martonis cursed the timid Crotone and helped to let some soldiers participate in the construction of the bridge.

The Wimbria River is not too wide or too deep, and with sufficient labor, seeing that the soldiers on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, under the command of the engineering personnel, were about to complete a wooden bridge according to the steps of building bridges in the Military Law, Martonis received a reward from the scout: about 8,000 Crotone light infantry attacked him!

His listless face suddenly became energetic: "Brothers, get up for me, there will be a war!"

What kind of people bring what kind of soldiers? The soldiers who were originally lying in a row and resting immediately turned over and stood up, put on their equipment, quickly approached the earthen pile, and looked out with excitement. The soldiers who were building the bridge also rushed back quickly after hearing the news.

Not long after, they saw the figure of Crotone.

………………………………………

After Miron fled back to Crimesa, he had specifically asked the very few surviving soldiers under Philip Defos and came to an astonishing conclusion: Philip Defos' army was actually defeated by the light infantry of Dionia! Now he has the conditions that he has few heavy infantry and more light infantry, which is why he decided to learn the enemy's tactics. He even asked the sailors of some fleets docked at the port of Crimesa to join the troops going out.

8,000 people came ashore from the south bank of the estuary of the Wimbria River, and under his leadership, they rushed along the Wimbria River and attacked the southern bank of Dionia.

Seeing the trenches and earthen walls built by the Dionians, Miron smiled instead: The Dionians tied their own hands and feet, which was more conducive to the attack of light infantry.

Two hundred meters away from the Dionians, he loosely spread his troops and surrounded the Dionian temporary defense camp with a half-arc back against the Wimbria River.

With a command, the archers advanced within a hundred meters and began to shoot arrows.

For the Dionian heavy infantry with earth wall protection, the rain of arrows seemed scary and did not cause much harm to them. They just needed to put the round shield on the wall and block their heads. The Dionian soldiers also joked: "The Crotones must have known that our bows and arrows were almost used up in the last battle, so they kindly sent us arrows." But the relaxed mood of the Dionian heavy infantry quickly disappeared without a trace.

The Crotone light infantry continued to move forward, with a distance of about 50 meters, and the accuracy of the bow and arrow was greatly increased.

Of course, the Oria heavy infantry with round shields and earth wall protection still has little damage.

However, when the Javeliners in Crotone continued to advance to twenty or thirty meters, the Dionian heavy infantry felt the pressure. Of course, squatting behind the earthen wall would not be damaged at all. Anyway, the enemy was light infantry and did not dare to fight with them head-on. However, when the turtle shrank was not Martonis' style, let alone once it shrank behind the earthen wall, you would not understand the opponent's movements. What if they bypassed the defense line and went down the river to burn the wooden bridge under construction?!

Martonis is now the commander of the South Bank forces and he is very clear about what his responsibilities are.

"Jaberlin!" He roared angrily, stood up from behind the earth wall, quickly put down the round shield, leaned back, and did not assist. With just waist and hand strength, the javelin in his hand was thrown for more than 20 meters, penetrated the chest of a Crotone javeliner, and then immediately squatted down.

The soldiers of the Dionian who had been suppressed by bows and arrows were ordered by Matonis and immediately began to fight back. Countless javelins flew over the earth walls and trenches, plunging into the military formations in Crotone, splashing blood. The arrows in Crotone and the javelins also poured on the heavy infantry of the Dionian, and the casualties on both sides began to increase.

Miron was paying attention to the development of the battle situation in front of the archers. He began to realize the benefits of using a large number of light infantry to attack simple heavy infantry. Unfortunately, the Dionian heavy infantry was not a traditional Greek heavy infantry. The javelins they threw caused great damage to the javeliners with weak protection in Crotone, and the casualties ratios between the two sides also vary greatly.

But Miron believes that several light infantrymen have changed to heavy infantrymen, and this transaction is worth doing. Crotone is not short of free civilian sailors now, but the citizens who serve as heavy infantrymen are lacking.

………………………………………

"Captain Epitianis, the enemy on the South Bank is fierce! Captain Matonis hopes to get your reinforcements!" The messenger brought Martonis's message.

"I get it!" Epitronis frowned and responded. He thought for a while and said, "Ampioles!"

"I'm here!"

"I want you to lead the stone caster and immediately cross the river to support Matonis!" Epitianis looked at his stone caster company and instructed: "Remember! Never enter Matonis' camp, otherwise the narrow camp will make you unable to avoid the attack of the huge number of light infantry soldiers in Crotone! You must go around the enemy's periphery and attack the enemy with the long range of the stone caster!"

"I understand, captain!" Ampiolex hurriedly summoned his soldiers.

The organization of the Light Infantry Brigade (the Seventh Battalion) of the Dionian Legion is somewhat different from that of the Heavy Infantry. According to the Military Law Regulations, the Heavy Infantry Brigade has five companies under its jurisdiction, each company with 200 people, totaling 1,000 people; while the Light Infantry Brigade has a structure of one thousand people, but there are only three companies, namely the Stone Throwing Corps, the Archer Corps, the Javelin Corps, and the number of people under each company is uncertain.

This is because compared with heavy infantry, the technical content of light infantry is higher, and javelins are better. Archers and stone throwers are difficult to become qualified light infantry without long-term training. Therefore, the composition of the light infantry brigade of the Dionian Legion is often determined according to the actual situation of its area. For example, the number of people in the first legion of the light infantry brigade is not much different, but its javelins are actually Thrace light shield soldiers; the light infantry brigade of the second legion is mainly from Turiyi, most of them are from free civilians and sailors, so there are more archers and some light shield soldiers; while the light infantry brigade of the third legion is mainly from Lukari, so most of them are javelins. Because the light infantry is loose in formation, has high elasticity, and rarely comes directly with the enemy, there are more and less light infantry brigades, which has little impact on command and combat.

"Captain, Ampiolex took away the catapults. Will the Croto civil warships moored in the river see us decreasing in the number of us? We took the opportunity to go up the river and destroy the wooden bridge we just built..." Zeniaris, the captain of the light shield company, said worriedly.

"I really hope that they will come. Even if we have few soldiers, I will have the confidence to destroy them! Instead of being able to attack or retreat like now, letting the wooden ships staying there restrain us and unable to reinforce our comrades on the other side!" Epigenius said angrily.

"Since they don't come, let's just go over and attack them!" A handsome young man interjected by a guard beside Epigenis.

Epitianis slapped him on the back of the head and cursed with a smile: "Idiot, where the enemy warships are parked, the river bank is low. We are going to attack those warships there, just like attacking the enemies on the city wall. We have suffered a lot of losses and less losses to the enemy. What will I, Epitianis, do in such a battle that we know we are going to suffer losses?!"

"Now we are located on the river bank high ground, and there are river bars on the river surface. The enemy knows that boating here will be passively beaten. Will they do such stupid things?!" asked the handsome guard.

Epigenis was speechless for a moment, then pushed him with his hand, and then cursed: "Yes, you have made great progress now!" Then, he sighed helplessly: "It seems that we and the enemy's warship have been exhausted. The commander asked us to protect the wooden bridge. I thought it was a simple task, but now it seems that it is really a troublesome!"

…………………………………

When Miron fought with Matonis, Davers had already received news that although Davers was surprised, he had no worries about Miron's daring to attack with all light infantry: "I inform Rides that his cavalry team was temporarily placed under the command of the First Legion. I believe Capps will be able to force the enemy back soon!"

Cappus, the commander of the First Legion, authorized by Davers, immediately mobilized three heavy infantry brigades and cavalry teams, quickly walked across the river, trying to go around the rear of the Crotones and cut off their retreat.

Unexpectedly, when Miron learned that Dionia's reinforcements were coming, he simply ordered a retreat when he had the advantage.

The battle ended here in a hurry. 500 of the 2,000 infantry led by Matonis were injured, the majority were injured. More than 700 of Miron's 8,000 were injured, but most of them were dead. But Matonis believed that he suffered a loss, while Miron believed that Crotone won a small victory because it hit the arrogant arrogance of the Dionians, which would delay the progress of building a camp and besieging Crimesa.

But when Miron returned to the city, he immediately received bad news: a large army came from the north and was entering the military camp of Dionia.

That must be Niutum's reinforcements! Miron suddenly became nervous.

…………………………………

In fact, there were not only 5,000 soldiers from Niutum, but also 3,000 Lausian Allied Forces entering the Dionia military camp, which brought the front-line troops of Dionia to as many as 22,000.

The already high morale Dionia military camp is now full of cheers...

Davers went out of the camp to welcome many senior team officers including Rauss consul Avinogis who had arrived in rushing to the death, as well as Bagule, the first captain of the Third Legion, Yassitus, and the second captain Lizaru.

"Sir, we're late!" Ascesters saluted respectfully, and then said with an apology.

"Is this marching slow from Niutum to Crimesa in more than three days?" Davers praised with a smile after returning the gift seriously: "You are here at the right time, and the next battle will depend on you!"
