Chapter 3 Lysias, the Messenger of Crotone

The news of Crotone's defeat in the army reached Crotone, and the whole city was shocked.

There was a fierce debate in the council meeting held urgently by the City Hall.

While scolding Amendolar's despicableness (referring to sneak attacks) and Melanteus' incompetence, the chief general Miron proposed to organize another army to attack Amendolar and rebuild Crotone's reputation.

Lucias criticized Miron, believing that it was his order to burn the city to cause uneasiness in the surrounding city-states and turned to hostile to Crotone. Now that Crotone is defeated, he should not use any more weapons to avoid being besieged by city-states such as Locre, Tarantum, and Amendolar.

Both sides have their own fans and cannot argue.

Half a day later, news deliberately spread by Amendolara - Turiyi Alliance (hereinafter referred to as Turiyi Alliance) came again: Tuah Alliance captured more than 5,000 Crotones, about 1,000 Asprestum and Silitung, 1,200 Crimesa and Castron, and more than 1,000 free people and slaves...

The sad Crotone people heard the news and saw hope. They gathered together and went to the town hall to put pressure on the council to redeem their loved ones.

And then again, news came: the Tua League and Tarantum became offensive and defensive alliances.

Miron finally stopped sticking to his own opinions. After discussion, the Council finally decided to send Lycias as an envoy to Turie to redeem the Crotone captives in the hands of the Tuah Alliance, and to sign a ceasefire peace if necessary.

Lycius led the envoys to the north by boat. He caught the wind and arrived at the mouth of the Clarti River in less than half a day. Here he saw a surprising scene: countless merchant ships were arranged in densely at the mouth of the river, like wooden walls. Ships were sailing out from time to time, and ships continued to gather from all directions...

Wasn't the city of Turiyi burned? Why are there so many merchant ships coming to trade? Lucias was confused.

Soon, his doubts were answered, and a simple fishing boat came up: "Hey, are you here to buy and sell things or talk about things?" A man on the bow of the boat said loudly.

After receiving the instructions from Lucias, the entourage asked back, "What are you doing?"

"Did you see the pattern drawn on the sail?" The man pointed his hand with a smug look up. The black hair on the sail was like flames wrapped around a cold weapon in the center - that was the symbol of Pluto: "Do you know, our consul, Lord Davers, is a descendant of Hades! My name is Seclian, and now the navigator appointed by the business officer Lord Marige, responsible for maintaining the smooth flow of the waterway. You must tell me what you are here to do, otherwise I can only ask you to leave so as not to block the route of the ship behind."

Lucias hesitated for a moment, made a resolute decision, and shouted to the other party: "We are the messengers from Crotone, who came to negotiate with the Tua League!"

Without anger, insults and other abnormal emotions, Secrean looked calm and nodded and said, "You Crotone are really calm, you are here now. Castron, Crimesa, and the messenger of the Siritui have arrived!"

Lucias's heart moved, and the follower asked curiously: "Why aren't you angry?!"

"Why am I angry, just because you are Crotone." Secreon shrugged: "You burned Turiyi, but I am not a citizen of Turiyi, I am just a free citizen. On the contrary, I am quite grateful to you Crotone."

Secrean smiled mysteriously and said, "I won't say much to you now. Come in with my boat and don't block the waterway."

Secrean's fishing boat led Lycius's boat into the Clarti River and sailed upstream.

Looking at the estuary of the north bank, Lycius could vaguely see several simple wooden docks set up on the shore, and cargoes were constantly unloaded from merchant ships, and carriages were transported to the earthen enclosure not far from the dock. Its location seemed to be in the old town of Barris.

Lucias frowned. At the beginning, Crotone sent an envoy to question why Turiy violated the agreement, which was agreed by all members of the parliamentary committee, but Lucias opposed the sending troops to attack Turiy and avenge the messenger. He believed that accepting Turiy's apology and obtaining more compensation has achieved Crotone's goal, and there is no need to send troops to fight again. It is both exhausting the people and causing money and fearing that there will be accidents. As a result, after Crotone's defeat, Turiy finally doesn't have to care about Crotone's attitude and starts to make use of the old city of Baris again.

"You haven't said why you want to thank us Crotone?" someone in the messenger asked curiously at the bow of the boat.

Secrean replied loudly on the fishing boat: "Isn't this obvious? If you hadn't Crotone burned Turie, there wouldn't have been Amendorala and Turie, and Davers would have been our consul. He is a descendant of Hades, and he is so noble, but he is very concerned about the people. He is not only not discriminated against us free people and slaves, but also quite friendly, just like he treats citizens! Have you heard of the "Amendorala Immigration Law" proposed and formulated by Lord Davers? Oh no, it should be called the "Tua Alliance Immigration Law" now."

Crotone shook his head.

Secrian looked "you are ignorant" and said loudly the general content of the immigration law, then said excitedly: "Mr. Davers said that when the city of Turiyi is initially built, this bill will begin to be implemented. All free people who want to become Turiyi citizens and perform well can apply for registration from the household registration official. I heard that if they become preparatory citizens, they can join the army and fight and get a place! Now my companions are working hard, and I wish I could build Turiyi tomorrow. Maybe next time you come, I will become a formal citizen!"

Seeing Secrian's intoxicated look, someone couldn't help but refute: "I have never heard of any city-state that would make outsiders citizens so easily. Maybe this immigration law is a fraud, and it was compiled to make you work hard for them!"

"Shut your mouth and don't talk nonsense!" Secreon was furious: "How could this bill announced by Lord Davers before all our free people and slaves be fake? Who is Lord Davers? When facing the threat of Turiy, he would rather break diplomatic relations than pay for the promised freedom of the runaway slaves! Facing your Crotone army forced to the city, he would rather fight with you than break diplomatic relations with the occupied Turiy! Lord Davers proved with facts that he was a person who kept his promise, so I believe what he said, and we all believe it! If it weren't for your envoy to negotiate, I would send you to the river to feed the fish!!"

The Crotone red face and couldn't help but want to insult loudly, Lycius stopped the urge to follow.

Secrean watched the movement of the ship behind him coldly. Seeing that the situation quickly calmed down, he was a little disappointed. He deliberately spitted out loud phlegm to the river side behind him, and then ignored them.

Lucias fell into deep thought: According to what he understood, the number of citizens in Turiyi now is probably not more than 3,000, while the maximum number of citizens of Amendorala is estimated to be only 4,000. Crotone alone has more than 30,000 citizens, and the affiliated Asprestum, the ally Cilitun, Kaorenia, etc., has a huge difference in strength. But if the Tuah Alliance can use the tens of thousands of free people and slaves here for it, it really needs to be paid attention. But in this hurry, foreigners from all over the world who have different intentions become citizens of the city-state. Can their loyalty to the city-state be compared with the indigenous people who have been citizens of the city-state for generations?

Lucias expressed deep doubts.

He stared at the river and saw many fishing boats with double fork patterns on the sails coming and going, extremely busy...

A towering city wall appeared on the river bank at the moment. Lucias knew that the city of Turiyi was about to arrive. He looked at the river-lined tower on the city wall. In the past, the two towers that were in a estrangement were connected to each other, which was quite spectacular. When the enemy ship attacked, the chain would be put down to prevent the enemy from entering Turiyi from the water. As a result, this time, Melancius used a traitor to directly attack the southern city, leaving the chain without any effect. Now it is gone. It should have been cut off by Melancius... Thinking of Melancius, although Lucius had a good relationship with Melancius, and even had a completely opposite ruling philosophy, he couldn't help feeling sad after hearing his miserable fate (when he was beaten to death by the Turiyi people, he was vague and could not see any human appearance).

Sekolian's fishing boat docked at the dock in the city of Turiyi. He got off the boat first and ran to report to a group of soldiers stationed at the dock.

The team of soldiers, led by the captain, quickly walked towards this side.

The Crotones noticed that even in the city, the soldiers remained in full formation.

"General, it's time for us to get off the ship." The follower reminded Lucias, who was thinking.

Lycias, who came to his senses, looked around: He had been to Turii several times. At that time, there were more than a dozen piers in the port of Turii, stone and wooden, with hundreds of ships docked, and warehouses, hotels and residences in the port area were lined up, bustling and messy. Now there are only a few lonely stone piers left here, and they are charred everywhere. Of course, these are all masterpieces of the Crotones!

Lycius got off the ship with a calm expression. The team of soldiers checked them with a calm expression. After confirming that it was Crotone's messenger regiment, a soldier immediately rode a horse to report to the Senate, and asked the messenger regiment to continue waiting in place.

Secrean returned to the fishing boat, staring at the majestic patrol captain on the shore, and was a little dazed for a moment until his companion came over to remind him: "Seccrean, it's time to leave the dock!"

Thank you to the book friend, the foolish emperor, for your reward!
