Chapter 2 The Holy Team of Thebes Begins

The Spartan messenger asked Dionia to make a guarantee that the Spartan enemy would not be funded next time.

Anta Oris responded with the original words of King Davers, but there was a little more ignition in his words: "You can all let the Apulian rebels who fled to the Peloponnese return to the kingdom for travel, why can't we sell some food to Thebes? Sparta should be glad that we, Dionia, are just selling food, not anything else!"

The Spartan messenger returned in disappointment, and the words of the Dionians made all the Spartan elders and inspectors more alert, making them realize that the Dionians have always had grudges about Sparta.

This made them even more urgent, but in the new year, when spring returned to the earth (376 BC, 18th year of the Kingdom of Dionia), Agsilous was bedridden and could not go out of war. The inspectors had to admit their appointments to Criombrotus, the Spartan king, as the commander of the entire army, and continue to attack Thebes.

After the coalition forces gathered, Cleombrotus decided to take the path of Agsilous attack on Thebes for the first time - crossing the Gulf of Corinth by boat, landing in the west of Piosha, and joining the Thespians.

However, the Thebes had suffered a loss once, so how could they be fooled again? They had ambushed in the mountains south of Thespia in advance. When the Spartan army passed through the valley pass, they suddenly attacked and repelled it.

Seeing that the Thebes occupied the important road, Cleombrotus believed that it was impossible to enter Thebes through this, so he led his army to withdraw back to Peloponnese.

Afterwards, the messengers of allied states gathered in Sparta. They were dissatisfied with the fact that Sparta recruited its citizens to fight Thebes for many years, but there was no obvious progress. They complained that the citizens were becoming increasingly lazy with this war. If they continued to fight like this, they might refuse to fight again.

They made new suggestions: The Thebes had heavy defenses in the south, and it was indeed difficult to implement breakthroughs. However, the number of warships in the coalition exceeded that of the Athenians. Why didn’t they use a fleet to transport an army, bypass Athens from the sea, land in the north of Central Greece, and join forces with the Fokis to attack Thebes from the northwest?

Finally, Sparta adopted the suggestion and sent a fleet of 60 three-layer oar warships, but while circling the waters of Athens, he also robbed the grain transport ships from the Black Sea to Attica.

Athens was almost famined and immediately sent 80 warships to catch up with the Spartan fleet near Naxos (Naxos City, Sicily, the Kingdom of Dionia). The two sides fought fiercely, and the Spartan fleet was defeated, resulting in the failure of the previously planned military operation.

The Athenians were inspired by victory, and because of the request of the Thebes, they decided to send a fleet of 50 three-layer oar warships to circle the Peloponnese Peninsula, attack the Spartan Navy, and harass their allies.

The Athenian Council appointed Timothus, the son of Connon, who had served in Persia, as commander of the fleet.

In 375 BC (19th year of the Kingdom of Dionia), Timothus led a fleet to sail, and did not land and harass the Peloponnese on the way, but he did an important thing, which was to land on the island of Kekira, but he neither enslaved the local residents nor forced them to change their political system. As a result, all the city-states on the island were willing to join the maritime alliance in Athens.

You should know that Kekira Island is the Greek land closest to the Kingdom of Diony, which means that the maritime power of Athens has extended to the near-Adria Sea, but the Kingdom of Dionya has no representation on this at this time.

Because the Athenian fleet was circling the Peloponnese Peninsula, the Spartan coalition had to be wary of it, so they did not launch a large-scale attack on Thebes. The Thebes seized this favorable opportunity and boldly attacked everywhere, in an attempt to liberate and conquer the neighboring city-state of Piosha controlled by the Spartan army.

Among them, a military operation commanded by Pero Pidas is the most famous.

When the Thebes received information that the Spartan army originally stationed in the city of Orhominos was transferred, Peropidas believed that this was a good opportunity to conquer the neighbors in the north (Orhominos and Thebes were separated by a Lake Copais), so he led 300 infantry and dozens of cavalry to march northward around Lake Copais.

As he approached the city of Alhominos, he received a frustrating news: the Spartan garrison had returned to the city.

Pero Pidas was unwilling to forcibly attack the city because this would increase the casualties of the soldiers, so he had to lead the army back in vain.

Unexpectedly, when the army was passing through a place called Tiexia, it suddenly encountered a Spartan army coming from the north.

The incident was rushed, beyond Pero Pidas' expectations, and the Spartan army was more than the soldiers he led.

There are strong enemies in front of the road, and the city of Orhominos in the rear is not far away. The Spartan garrison in the city may attack at any time, and there is also a blockade of Lake Copays on the side. Thebes army is in a desperate situation and cannot escape. Pero Pidas can only lead his army to fight to the death.

He placed 300 infantrymen in the middle, and the cavalry were arranged on both wings.

As soon as the formation was set up, the Spartans attacked fiercely. Not long after the two sides fought, the Thebesian cavalry on both wings were defeated.

But in the middle, the Spartan army, which had more soldiers than the opponent, fell into a tough battle because they were facing the Holy Army of Thebes, specially formed by the Thebes government, trained by Ipaminunda.

These 150 gay young men from Thebes were not afraid of the strong enemies. They not only attacked fiercely, but also cooperated very well. They also encouraged each other during the battle, so they were always very morale.

After a period of fierce battle, the Spartan army began to retreat step by step under their impact. What's worse is that their commander died in the battle, and the Spartan army was eventually defeated.

Because he was in a dangerous place, Pero Pidas did not dare to order a pursuit and led the victory army to hurried back to Thebes.

In this battle, the number of people on both sides was not more than 1,000. Although it was small, it was even more meaningful. Unlike the battle that killed Phoebidas, this time it was a victory in a face-to-face front-line battle. There were many real Spartan warriors in the defeated Spartan army. Therefore, the victory shocked the entire Central Greece and inspired many Central Greek city-states controlled by the Spartan army to rise up and resist, and also made the fledgling Thebes Sacred Army famous in the Greek mainland.

"Beep! Beep! Beep!..." In the early morning, the manic copper whistle in the Turi's slave camp sounded.

Under the urging of the foreman, the slaves quickly got up and washed up, and then lined up into the cafeteria to have breakfast.

The canteen buildings in the slave camp are somewhat similar to those in the Tuliyi Military Camp, but the area is smaller, and they are all square tetrahedral buildings. More than 20 columns support a 4-meter-high stone flat roof. It is open and unobstructed on three sides, and the other side is closed is the kitchen. The spacious hall is neatly and densely placed with dining tables and benches, which are enough to accommodate two or three hundred people at a time.

The slaves smelled the smell of food in the air and did not rush up. They still lined up in long queues and walked to the steaming window in accordance with order. You should know that these slaves did not abide by discipline at the beginning. They only knew that they understood the rules after many severe punishments.

"Uncle, what's the delicious breakfast today?" A slave asked impatiently after he stood in front of the window and handed his wooden tray and clay pot in.

Most of the chefs and helpers who work as slave camps are slaves or freed slaves, so they often have a good attitude towards the slaves who come to the cafeteria to eat, and sometimes give extra care.

The middle-aged chef holding a wooden spoon said with a smile: "You are so lucky today! Not only does breakfast include bread, porridge and broth, but each person also has a piece of pastrami, and honey is also applied to each piece of bread!"

"real?!"

"Do I still need to lie to you?" The chef held the served breakfast on a wooden plate and handed it to him: "Look at it yourself."

"Wow, it's really meat!" the slave shouted excitedly.

Hearing his shout, the slaves lined up behind us had a commotion.

"What's going on! Quiet!" The foreman shouted, immediately regaining the silence of the team, but every slave's face was full of desire.

"Hurry out after you get the breakfast, don't get stuck there!" the foreman urged in a stern tone.

The slave biting honey bread, holding a wooden plate, and quickly found a dining table to sit down.

The chef was a foreman who was born into a liberated slave and was not afraid of the fierce foreman. Instead, he knocked on the copper pot filled with broth with a wooden spoon and shouted to the slaves: "Do you know why today's breakfast is so rich? I heard that it was because more than 20 slaves fainted at the construction site of the quarry yesterday, and... several slaves were injured (in fact, 7 slaves died). When the doctors were treating him, they found that they fainted because they were too hungry... Later, somehow, His Majesty learned about this and issued instructions to make you eat well and ensure your health.

After receiving the order, Lord Ekarus did not have a good rest at night. He immediately came to us to discuss and urgently sent someone to the Tuliyi Market to buy food... In the future, not only will your breakfast be rich, but your dinner be rich, and the food will be transported to the construction site at noon to add food to you!"

The slaves immediately cheered and the entire cafeteria was boiling.

The foremen changed their faces and were about to shout angrily.

The chef had already shouted: "Let us thank the kind Majesty Davers together!"

"Thank you, the kind Majesty Davers!!!" The cafeteria was filled with cheers.

More than half of these slaves came from the Western Mediterranean War a few years ago. They each had their own gods believed in by their own race. However, under the long-term influence of other slaves and environment in the camp, most of them began to believe in Hades.
