Chapter VI Resolutions Concerning the Selection of Commissioners

Member of Parliament Balás, who was still busy with the trial of the case late at night, looked at the piles of documents in front of him. He decided to rest for a while, pick up the hot coffee just sent by his assistant, and taste it carefully. Before he could drink the second sip, a rapid knock on the door sounded outside. Assistant Mirière stood up and walked towards the door. After confirming that the person outside was Robespierre's servant, he flashed and let him in.

"Citizens of Balas, the Public Security Committee requires you to go over immediately and have something to discuss." The panting message continued: "It's urgent. There is a second assistant commissioner about yours. Please prepare and accept the inquiries of the committee members." After saying this, he refused the coffee prepared by Assistant Mirière for him, turned around and left.

Balas, who wrinkled his forehead, felt a little confused. Could it be that something happened to the Oriental boy, actually asked the committee members to summon him overnight, hoping that he would not cause trouble for himself. Alas, he had enough trouble. Thinking of this, Balas ordered his assistants to pack up the documents on the table, and left the office with Assistant Mirière, and prepared to take a carriage to the Public Security Committee. Just as they got on the carriage, the assistant commissioner of the front army in Toulon, whom he appointed, came a report.

Before this, the committee's question about the commander-in-chief of the Toulon Front was still continuing.

"Aren't the citizen of Balas in Toulon? He can do it." Kuba finally spoke. Obviously, he had just rushed back from Vandai, and did not know that Balas had returned to Paris.

"No, the citizen of Balas returned to the National Convention the day before yesterday and is assisting in the handling of Mrs. Roland's case." Robespierre explained casually.

"Madame Roland, oh, is the daughter of the sculptor, known as the "uncrowned Queen of the Girondes," said Kuba.

"Yes, it's the reactionary woman who claimed that 'France is full of dwarfs and no talent'. She married an old man who could be a father at age. It is said that with strong sensuality, she brought Roland a lover. What's the name?" De Bois wanted to mock someone with some meaning.

"Wrong, my committee member Debois, not one, but a group of Girondists named Bozzo, are the ones who are most jealous of Mr. Roland." Varena immediately continued.

"Hahaha..." Debois smiled, Varina smiled, Saint Just and Kudon laughed, they were all laughing at Dandong beside him. Robespierre wanted to laugh, but he noticed Dandong's unpleasant expression and forced himself to stand up and prepare to pour a cup of coffee, although he didn't drink the drink in his cup at all.

"Enough, enough, the committee should discuss major events in the Republic, not trivial and unfounded private topics." Dandong was angry and waved his huge arm and kept waving. He didn't care how outsiders commented on the 35-year-old self-pursuing Miss Louise's 15-year-old, but he was extremely disgusted with his colleagues using this attack and slandering his revolutionary achievements.

"Okay, it's over. This is not a cafe, but the office of the Public Security Commission. Let's discuss the issue of the garrison commissioner." Robespierre, who had not poured coffee, returned to his position and opened his mouth to rescue Dandong.

The office's ridicule and anger came to an end after Robespierre's words.

The meeting continued.

"Oh, Balas actually sent a young Oriental man to serve as an assistant commissioner." Saint Just felt a little strange.

"He has this power according to the National Convention's laws regarding commissioners." It is explained that Kudong, who has a good relationship with Balas.

"But the Orientals are not French citizens. Even if they are really revolutionary ally of France, at least they should stay in the Republic for a year before they can be given a position, not to mention that he is too young." Dandong began to object, because he felt that this strange Oriental threatened his interests, although he could not see it yet.

"I don't agree with your point of view, Danton member." De Bois's words surprised everyone. This member who was close to the anger (radical revolutionary party represented by Zach Rue) had an average relationship with Balas, and it was not good or bad. It was only two months ago that the gardener violently criticized all kinds of speculators, including Ekreba (the nephew of MP Barras), at a regular meeting of the Paris Commune (the revolutionary body that performed the functions of the Paris municipal government) and called on the Paris people to have another revolution to "send all the vampires who devour their brains" to the guillotine, since the two were like enemies.

"What we need is a revolutionary comrade, not a pleasure noble officer. I think that Oriental man can be appointed, no, Comrade Andrew as a special commissioner of the Toulon Front. In addition, General Carto was removed from his post and made a citizen with more commanding talents take responsibility." De Bois ignored the reactions of others and continued his speech. De Bois was a pure radical revolutionary. What he admired most was a young man who was simple in life, selfless in helping the masses, and was full of work passion. All of this happened to be the description of the assistant commissioner in the secret letter.

"Then the question of his identity?" asked Saint Just.

"On behalf of the National Convention, the Public Security Commission granted him the nationality of French citizens," said De Boois.

"Then his age question?" Kudong asked.

"Age is not a problem at all. Only young people have revolutionary passion and fighting will, and will not be attracted by the decadent aristocratic customs." Debois said.

"Then his sphere of authority?" Varena asked.

"Personal Representative, my brother" De Boois replied with a smile.

"I object,..." Dandong stood up again, trying to refute, but asked Robespierre to stop him.

"Don't make a decision first, let's listen to the narrative of the citizens of Balas." After saying this, Robespierre summoned his guard and asked him to immediately call the MP Barras to come to the Public Security Committee to discuss matters.

"Whether the nobleman was drinking coffee in the office or slapping on a woman's bed, he would be pulled over." De Boois instructed him before the guard left.

Thirty minutes later, Balas came to the committee's parliamentary room with anxiety and left his assistant Mirière outside the door. Before that, the House had already read the report made by the second assistant in the carriage.

"Hello, citizen of Balas, I'm sorry that the committee invited you late at night because of an important matter with you. I hope you don't mind." said all the committee members present, who struggled to pull a chair for the parliamentarian, placed it between himself and Saint Just, and signaled that Balas to sit next to him.

"Citizen of Balas, please state the ability and performance of your second assistant commissioner." Robespierre saw that Balas wanted to stand up and speak, and added: "This is not the National Convention, nor is you a member of the Public Security Commission, so you can sit and speak. Although you do not have the right to vote, the committee members will give you a voice. Your evidence will determine our vote on a proposal by Commissioner De Bois."

The members present at the Public Security Committee began to listen to the statements of the MP Balas: from how to meet Andrew, talk to him, understand his life experience and ambitions, and his appointment. The MP finally explained that he fully believed in this revolutionary comrade from the East, no, and was a Chinese revolutionary comrade. Of course, before saying this, Kudong gave some hint.

"His attitude towards nobles and emperors?" Kudong asked.

"Very very hated!" Balas replied.

"How does his knowledge of the revolution?" asked Saint Just.

"Fight to the end!" Balas replied.

"His friendship with the poor" asked Debois.

"Friendship and help!" Balas replied.

"His passion for work" Varena asked.

"Full of passion!" Balas replied.

"His ability performance" Dandong asked.

"Excellently excellent!" Balas replied.

"Can you guarantee the authenticity of every word you say?" asked Robespierre.

"Absolutely guaranteed, never hide it!" Balas replied firmly.

At this point the meeting was over, and the members began to vote:

"Agree," Kudong said.

"Agree," Saint Just said.

"Agree," Varena said.

"I agree to the appointment of Comrade Andrew," Dandong saw the disadvantage of the situation and no longer insisted on his point of view, but said: "But he does not agree to the appointment and removal of the commander-in-chief, at least wait until the commissioner provides certain evidence."

"I agree with the appointment proposal of Committee De Bois, but I also understand Chairman Dandong's concerns. I personally think that Comrade Andrew should be given the position of plenipotent commissioner in the Toulon Front, and before that, he should be removed from his position of Assistant Commissioner in the Toulon Front. For General Carto's problems, the Public Security Committee will issue a document to him on behalf of the National Convention and give him corresponding warnings and advice." Robespierre expressed his views, that is, the suggestions of most of the members expressed also took into account Dandong's feelings.
