Chapter 35 In the National Convention (1)

The day after Andrew arrived in Paris.

At 7:30, Mrs. Leise woke up the general. After a while of washing, the butler had prepared a sumptuous breakfast for the guests. At about 8 a.m., Andrew accompanied Balas to drive to the National Guild. According to the mentor's advice, he left all his entourage, including the orderly, at the official residence of Balas.

Today is a sunny day. The sun rising early drove away the night with the sunlight. The streets of Paris began to have vitality and hustle and bustle replaced silence. Women sat in groups on the stone steps in front of the church, making yarns with old cloth while singing Marseille. Montsau and Luxembourg Park have become training grounds. At all intersections, there are busy arsenals, making spears in front of passers-by and winning applause. People smiled passionately.

Busts of Franklin, Rousseau, Brudeo and Mara are everywhere. Clans of the Military Academy are marching in line. The National Convention decrees call them "interns of the God of War" and the people call them "Robersbill's young attendants". Outside the shop window is a commune notice, which stipulates that each person has a pound of meat every ten days. Because there is a line in front of the door, the people in the queue grab a long rope with their hands in order. Men want to fight, and the basic line is

The women above attracted the slutty boys, wearing shiny boots, fluffy hats, and toothpicks in their mouths, trying to tease the girls. They were pursued by the people like thieves, but the royalists called them "active citizens." However, there were few steals, serious obscurity, perseverance and integrity. The barefoot, hungry people, as they walked past the jeweler window of the equal officer, lowered their eyes seriously.

The carriage passed through a stone bridge on the Seine, where the bridge stood a colossus carved and painted by David, which Mercier derogated to be a "huge wooden clown". All the walls were posted with notices of all sizes, white, yellow, green, red, printed or handwritten: "Long live the Republic!" The children stuttered and sang the song "Everything will be fine."

(Note: The above paragraph is based on the description of Paris citizens in "993". Andrew is not very honest, but the author is very honest and borrows some sentences from Master Hugo.)

Starting from Balas' home, you need to cross 5 blocks and cross the Seine River to reach the National Guild. Balas leaned on the carriage and closed his eyes to rest. This was his old habit. Andrew was restless, and he kept tidying up his clothes, as if he was afraid that there would be a little dust on his straight military uniform. After fiddling, he slightly lifted up the curtains and looked around at the scenery on both sides of the Seine River, but unfortunately there was no Eiffel Tower. As soon as the freshness passed, he began to take out his pocket watch and stared at the turning hour hand on it.

It was 8:12. Andrew was a little nervous because the urgent carriage was getting closer and closer to the Ethnic Palace.

(Note: The Palace of Ethnicity is the Palace of Duilary. The original site of the National Convention was in the Hall of Manei. Shortly after Louis XVI walked onto the guillotine, the members of the parliament decided to move the address of the National Convention to the Palace of Duilary. The Palace of Duilary was also renamed the Palace of Ethnicity. It was May 10, 1793.)

"It will be at least 20 minutes left. My child is a little nervous?" Balas, who was still sleeping on the seat just now, opened his eyes and looked at the anxious young man and said relaxedly.

Andrew was quite honest and did not deny it, but he just nodded.

"Well, it's nothing. You are not going to fight. Of course, you are not afraid of fighting. Going to the parliament is just to let you, Andrew, my son-in-law, the brave General of the Mountain, accept congratulations from all the members in public. You should know that not only the citizens of Paris praise you, but even the members of the National Convention praise you without exception." Balas said, with an exaggerated pride in his tone.

When Andrew heard the mentor's praise, his face was very calm and he had no big expression. After experiencing too many flatteries, the general's face was afraid that he could not even stab the needle. With time, perhaps the lead bullet would be helpless.

Without the nonsense of being too humble, Andrew remembered something and suddenly asked: "Including the royalists?"

"Not surprisingly, there are always one or two people in the parliament that belong to them."

"It is also an old-style restorationist."

"How did you understand!" Balas was surprised.

"It's not difficult to think that you already had this meaning in the conversation last night. And," Andrew paused, pointed at the carriage and continued, "Paris was not very good in Paris, and most of the people involved in the murder were restorationists. As a member of the Public Security Committee, a senior member of the National Council and commander of the Paris National Self-Defense Forces, Balas, dared to walk unscrupulously through the streets and alleys, but only had a groom around him, not even a minimum guard. What's more, there is a Toulon butcher hated by all the nobles in the carriage. But since I set off, my intuition told me that no one was monitoring or tracking us. This is very abnormal, very abnormal."

"You are very alert." This is Balas' praise.

"A habit developed in the military camp." Andrew answered faintly.

"Political need."

"You need to sell your soul?!"

"It's not betrayal, it's interest."

"Oh, interests are excuses."

"Balas is also a noble family."

"I know."

"So, as a noble son-in-law, he will also be a noble."

Andrew didn't say anything, silently huddled aside, as if a little discouraged. Barras understood what the general in front of him was thinking, and continued: "Anyone can become a noble, the kind of new noble who calls each other a citizen. In this regard, we are somewhat similar to the new British aristocrats after the Glorious Revolution. As long as they have power and money, power is the power and military power; money is property or the ability to create property."

"You have a deal?"

"Yes, they sent an envoy to meet with me, just a few hours before you arrived in Paris."

“A deal was reached?”

"Yes!"

“Politics are dirty!”

"Andrew is childish!"

“I just couldn’t accept it.”

"It's easy to understand, and there's always dirty things behind them."

"Actually, you should tell me all the facts."

"I didn't say it directly because sometimes, my understanding is much deeper than others' oral statements."

"I have nothing to say and need a rest."

"Haha, then concentrate on preparing your words, which will come in handy in the parliament hall later."
