With the upgrade and popularization of 3G network infrastructure, today's mobile Internet is redefining people's lifestyles. Data has become increasingly massive and unstructured, and this is also a new opportunity and new challenge faced by all Internet companies.
Here, we throw a new view: Internet companies are using data to understand the human nature of users, which may bring about some social issues that we have not considered before. Although the relevant conclusions may not be correct, it is a new direction of thinking and a bold attempt.
1) Social application addiction has become a possibility.
Wechat was born in September 2010, and in the following months, it released important versions including Moments and official accounts.
Unlike what ordinary users understand, Moments has conducted thousands of small version fine-tuning and testing during the iteration process. According to the data provided by WeChat, we learned that the most frequent modifications are mainly concentrated in the following points: the interaction method of posting pictures, the style and color of the icon, the font size, line spacing, and the image compression.
Note that this is what we think is less important, but it has become an important part of the success of WeChat.
Thanks to the voice and video call versions of WeChat, which accumulated tens of millions of users, has become the "test field" for the subsequent version of WeChat. WeChat engineers showed us the data of the attached figure, which is the adjustment data of the text font size attached to the Moments circle in a certain version. The difference between the front and back optimization is as high as 30%.
How is the experiment done?
Before conducting the test, the engineers of WeChat will group a large number of users according to the user attributes. Taking the font size as an example, the font of the Moments version of the group a of 10,000 users is 9px (pixels), and the font of the Moments version of the Moments version of the group b of 10,000 users is 10px. They conduct tests regularly and quantitatively among different users, which is very similar to the "control variable experiment" commonly referred to in middle school experiments. When the optimization results reach a peak, they will turn to the next experiment.

Although WeChat engineers cannot explain the reasons for the data improvement, the result is correct and perhaps more important.
This has caused the new lifestyle users who use WeChat to spend up to 2 hours a day on average in their circle of friends, which is more than 10% of the daily awake time of normal people.
The same thing happened in the official account version of WeChat. Now, WeChat engineers tell us that they are trying to use test methods to ultimately control the time users spend on WeChat every day to avoid overdrawing their interest in WeChat.
According to them, starting from the second half of this year, the number of visits to Moments at 2 a.m. is on the rise. They are trying to weaken the "social addiction" of their users, after all, this may become a potential health threat.
Unbelievable, there are hundreds of engineers watching you across the screen every day, trying to keep you on for a long enough time while avoiding you getting bored quickly.
And there is a possibility of abuse here. Practice brings true knowledge? It's just like that.
2) The truth and falseness of the data.
The idea came from the laboratory and Orange Technology, a subsidiary of Menggu Technology, reached a data research collaboration. Before that, a large number of our research only took place on WeChat data sets. Compared with the two, we were surprised to find that there were unusual differences.
Orange Browser is an important product of Orange Technology. Now they are the second largest mobile browser manufacturer in China, with a total number of users of tens of millions. Every day, a large number of mobile phone users search for information through its Orange navigation. At present, they have not entered the search engine field, and all users' searches will be processed through the cooperative Qiandu Company.
In terms of WeChat’s social networking, especially in the circle of friends, people show more personal beauty, which may be "false". When searching, people often reveal "reality" unconsciously.
A collaboration between WeChat and BMW has always been a classic case we are discussing. Why do users who do not have the financial ability to buy BMW cars are more inclined to forward this push ad? WeChat engineers are not willing to answer such questions because for them, the result is correct, so they will continue to test and adopt such strategies in more advertisements. Although we are not so willing to draw conclusions directly, our intuition tells us that this behavior may be related to "vanity". It is just that because the amount of data is difficult to support this statement, we will press and not state it for the time being.
The data provided by Orange Technology has performed a lot of data cleaning and desensitization (eliminating personal sensitive information). At first we didn't care much, but when the research began, we became more and more aware of the importance of this behavior.
"Murder", "Suicide", "Girlfriend cheating", "Ding Ding Short", "Plastic surgery", "Making money quickly", "Daily lottery", "Other province", "Manhole cover"...
Let’s not discuss the size of the data for now. The large number of search keywords in the data make us realize the difficulty of this research. Users trust products more than we imagined. They will ask search engines a lot of questions, and this may involve multi-dimensional social issues such as illegality, moral ethics, money fraud, and regional religious discrimination.
We believe that the overall spiritual outlook of society is high-spirited, but the data set composed of many unconscious behaviors finally presents a different kind of "reality".
Because most of Orange Technology's users are WeChat users. The laboratory therefore proposed a new way of discussion and research. For this reason, the leader of this research even imagined a scenario: a man who showed his love in his circle of friends, had a successful career and a bright and beautiful family, but one day he searched for his girlfriend's cheating, short-term, credit card application, and even violent and bloody things in Orange Browser. This sounds crazy, but before, it had the possibility of correlation, making the combination of truth and falsehood become real reality. It is not only beneficial to individual and group psychology research, but also a possibility of control, surveillance, suspicion and even conviction.
At present, this research is temporarily shelved. Because WeChat rejected our data cooperation application, they believe that even from the perspective of humanities and social science research, these data will still cause unnecessary social panic even after cleaning and desensitization, and there are currently no relevant laws and regulations to regulate how to use these data reasonably for research.
This is right. But it is not that right.
As far as I know, WeChat is using user data from multiple products for mining, and the results generated in the middle will eventually be applied to several credit credit products of Menggu Payment. This can be simply understood as WeChat mines users' habits and "discriminates" against low-income and inability to repay the loan in algorithmically.
The truth is that they can use it, just from a profit-making perspective. Without profit, they are reluctant to try it.
