Chapter Two Hundred and Thirty The Three Schools of Mohism

The Mohist school is undoubtedly the exoteric scholar of the times. At the beginning, the Mohist theory and the Yang and Zhu theory divided the world equally, becoming the two most popular schools, which made Mencius complain. But now, the Mohist school and the Confucian school have become the two most popular schools, which made Han Fei unable to help complaining, oh, it is not complaining, but reprimanding. From the early Warring States Period to the present, the Mohist school has never been lonely. Since Mozi's death, the Mohist school has gradually divided it into three factions.

The Xiangli Mo, also known as Qin Mo, inherited Mozi's theory of scientific and technological manufacturing, was very pragmatic, and constantly conducted scientific and technological research to create more advanced tools and weapons for the Qin State. They believed that only Qin State could complete the ideal society in their hearts for them. In fact, this Mo family also supported the unification. They were the most fanatical and respected Zhao Kuo, because what Zhao Kuo said was the king of the world, which they were pursuing.

At that time, Mozi's Shang Tong thought was to propose a unified idea implicitly. Therefore, this Qin Mo also inherited this point. They talked about Shang Tong, talked about the heavenly aspirations (operated according to the rules and regulations), and did not play music (abolition of the cumbersome and extravagant chime bell manufacturing and performance). Some places coincided with the Legalists and were very similar to Zhao Kuo's theory, but these people would not leave Qin to find Zhao Kuo because they had more important things to do in Qin.

They worked as craftsmen or craftsmen in Qin State. The King of Qin asked them to teach more craftsmen or develop more good things. By the way, those who develop advanced technologies can also be promoted.

The Mo of Dengling’s family? Of course, Chu Mo. Most of them act as knights. They acted as righteous people everywhere? They opposed wars from various countries and believed that these wars were launched by the powerful and nobles for their own interests. They measured the world by their own values. What they inherited was Mozi’s non-aggression? Theories such as chastity and burial. They helped weak countries to resist the invaders, and the invaders over the years? The only one invaders is Qin.

Therefore, the relationship between Chu Mo and Qin Mo was very rigid, and the contradiction between the two sides was no less than that with Confucianism. These raiders of Chu Mo carried swords and were chivalrous everywhere to help the weak?

The last kind of Mohism? The Moh of the Qi State's Jiafu family. This sect is a sect that mainly debates scholars. They traveled across countries and taught the Mohism's idea of universal love. They opposed the use of violence to solve problems (even uprisings), hoping to achieve peace in a gentle way. Of course, they inherited some of Mozi's ideas in logic and had some intersection with Gongsun Long's thoughts. This sect was the one who debated with Gongsun Long for a long time.

They are not only good at logic, but also have their own research in mathematics, optics, etc., but they have fallen now, just because they recognize non-aggressiveness and Shang Tong. They want to unify in a peaceful way and want to appoint kings through elections... It can be seen that they have also inherited Mozi's national ideas, that is, democratic election system, and elections are needed from kings to officials.

Among these three Mo families, Chu Mo was the one who opposed Zhao Kuo the most, because Zhao Kuo's unification was to encourage fighting among the countries, which was an unjust war. Qin Mo respected Zhao Kuo, but Qi Mo recognized the advanced systems mentioned in the Mafu Book.

After Zhao Kuo came to this era, he never stopped reading. He originally only read the art of war, but now he is studying the theories of hundreds of schools of thought. He reads the most books of the Mohist school, because many of the remarks of the Mohist school always shocked them. Whether it was the very advanced election, the attainments in mathematics, logic, etc., or the simple philosophical thoughts, Zhao Kuo felt kind.

When he heard that Dong Chengzi captured a group of Mo who were hostile to him, he immediately understood that this was Chu Mo.

He asked Dong Chengzi to release these people and bring them to his presence. When the soldiers escorted these knights to Zhao Kuo, Zhao Kuo found that these people were not resentful or fearful. They were very calm and they were also looking at Zhao Kuo. Zhao Kuo looked at the ink-speakers who were wearing simple clothes and straightened their bodies, and suddenly sighed and shook their heads.

"If you want to kill us, you can do it at any time, but please don't insult us like this." Their leader spoke. The leader was a middle-aged man with a very serious and thick eyebrows and big eyes. This reminded Zhao Kuo of a comedian in later generations. Zhao Kuo asked them to sit down. Their weapons had long been taken away, and there were still many soldiers standing around looking at them.

Zhao Kuo asked the soldiers to leave and sat facing these Momen.

"Please don't get me wrong. I don't want to insult the two and three sons." Zhao Kuo said, and said seriously: "The Confucianism just appeared. He is not a prominent scholar. No one agrees with it, and there are not many disciples. Since Confucius' death, Confucianism has been divided into multiple factions. Each faction has inherited a little Confucius' knowledge and often quarreled because of different ideas. However, each of their factions has developed something of their own and constantly updated their own doctrines and ideas."

"They did not give up on the benevolence that runs through the thoughts they learned. On the basis of benevolence, they made greater breakthroughs and absorbed a lot of things."

"But the Mohist school in the first place was also divided into three factions, and each of them inherited some of Mozi's knowledge. However, Mo of the three factions had never developed their own ideological content, and was even reducing Mozi's theory... Mozi's theory can not be used alone. He interpreted a multi-faceted society and realized it... He cut a self-consistent academic theory so much, and even reduced the inherited theory. Are you not afraid that the Mohist school will completely disappear?"

The Mo people were a little surprised. They looked at Zhao Kuo in front of them. Zhao Kuo looked a little sad, as if he was... sad about the decline of the Mo family? The leader looked at him seriously, and was not sure whether Zhao Kuo was humiliating them. He summarized his words and said: "Mo Zi said: To know a knowledge or whether things are correct, we need to look at three kinds of understandings."

"The first is based on the historical experience of the ancient sage kings recorded in history. The prosperous times in history were all periods of war and peace. Therefore, if we Chu Mo said that we were not attacking, we wanted to make peace in the world. The second is based on the experience of the people. Everyone in the world hates war and the people hate the invaders. This is why we should help weak countries to fight against powerful countries. The third is based on whether the results of political practice are in line with the interests of the country and the people."

"I think that without war, the king will not oppress the people for personal interests, everyone loves each other and does not hurt each other. This is the most correct thing. How can you..."

Before the leader finished speaking, Zhao Kuo stood up angrily and pointed at him and cursed: "Mozi has such a theory. Why don't Ersanzi study it seriously? Why don't he inherit it? Hundreds of years have passed, why don't he develop it?!" Zhao Kuo paced back and forth angrily, saying: "Mozi divided war into justice and injustice. He wanted to see a peaceful world without war. He didn't want to see the people at the bottom suffer, so he proposed to love... for the use of the ritual, for the burial of the ritual..."

"What a good theory, why didn't Er Sanzi think about how to achieve these things? How to end the war and make peace in the world? Can this be realized by helping weak countries resist strong countries? As long as there is still division, the war will not stop... Is it for the Er Sanzi to use it for the Er Sanzi to use it? Why don't the king accept the Er Sanzi's proposal and let the nobles enjoy it? They save a bite of food, and the people can eat for a month!!"

"Universal love... What should we use to make people live in harmony? Rely on the threat of Ersanzi? Or use clear rules and regulations to stipulate that people live in harmony and not hurt each other? Use rules and regulations to avoid the nobles from harming the people. Isn't this what Ersanzi should pursue?! Ming Gui, why did Mozi explain ghosts? Does he really believe in ghosts and gods?"

"Then why does he still oppose fate? Why do he say that people should rely on their own efforts rather than the gifts of God? He wanted to scare the nobles through the theory of souls. He said that killing innocent people will be retaliated by ghosts and gods. Isn't this just to stop the nobles from killing the people?!"

"Why did the second and third sons go astray? Why didn't they formulate rules and regulations that the state can implement? What Mozi said about letting the people elect officials, why should they let the people come for election? This is because the officials do not love the people and the people are powerless to do anything against them. Why don't they improve it and let the people have the power to supervise the officials? If the officials do anything that harms the people, let the people have a way to appeal?!"

Zhao Kuo became more and more angry the more he spoke. When he looked at the Mozhe in front of him, the man from the bottom of his family, wearing simple clothes, telling the doctrines to everyone in the farmland, under the big trees, sighing at the cruelty of the world, and imagining the ideal society. The doctrine of the Mohist school has begun to decline, and in a while, they will completely perish. After the Western Han Dynasty, there will be no trace of the Mohist school again.

It is a pity that the doctrine that contains all things disappears like this... Nowadays, only Qi Mo, the most declining, has developed logic and simple materialist philosophy. They ignored the benevolence and righteousness of Confucianism and directly put forward the so-called "righteousness is profit". However, Chu Mo went astray, perhaps because he enjoyed the pleasure of helping the strong and helping the weak, and eventually lost himself and evolved into a new group, a ranger.

Although Qin Mo focused on practice, their research also went astray. Mozi's scientific research, including limit theory, force is the driving force, simple view of time and space, small hole imaging, geometric theory, and mechanical design. Mozi's research was not to create more advanced tools and weapons. He used these knowledge fields to grasp the original meaning of life and understand the truth of the world.

Looking at Zhao Kuo who was angry and scolding him, the Mo people looked confused. Why do you sound more concerned about the prosperity of the Mo family than us? Especially the leader, when he heard Zhao Kuo explain Mozi's thoughts and the expression of their incompetence, he suddenly felt that Mozi stood in front of them and expressed his disappointment to them.

The leader wiped the sweat from his forehead. How could Ma Fujun study the classics of Mohism so deeply?

After Zhao Kuo finished talking about his opinion of the Mo family, he sat down and stopped looking at the Mo people in front of him. The Mo people did not speak. They originally asked Zhao Kuo to ask why Zhao Kuo wanted to encourage war and why he did not pay attention to peace. However, at this moment, after being scolded by Zhao Kuo, they were suddenly stunned. The words that were prepared to ask for guilt in their hearts were a little unspeakable.

"Then what do you think...what should we do?" The leader suddenly asked, shook his head and said in pain: "In recent years, the Mozhe has experienced many wars, and many people have died, but we have nothing to change... War is wrong, war is wrong." He said, and said seriously: "You may not know that in Nanyang, Rushui is stained with blood, and even water cannot wash away the blood..."

"What benefits can the people get from the war? The Qin people, are their lives not as good as a title? How many Qin people participate in the war every year, and how many people can get the title in the end? The most benefits are the upper class aristocrats, not the lower class. These wars are selfish and inhumane!"

Zhao Kuo was silent for a moment before saying, "I had the same idea as you at the beginning. When I thought of the death of 400,000 people, I was chilling. When I thought of my own death, I was so scared that I couldn't fall asleep... Like you, I hate war, I don't like death, but I found that this is something I can't change. As long as there are wars in various countries, it will definitely exist. Even if the countries are gone, wars will still exist."

He said seriously: "The people have lived a very hard life, and the people have no benefits from the war. All they have got is disaster... I can defeat Qin for Zhao. As long as I am still alive, I can fight again and again. Although I don't know whether I can defeat the enemy, I will not retreat... However, I can protect the Zhao people for decades, but I can't protect them forever. I can leave my disciples, but the war will continue and there will still be people who die."

"Only when Mo Zi said that to make a person's caliber the standard, that is, when a king of the world, these continuous wars will end. At least, no one will kill each other again... And what I can do is to reduce casualties in the war. I advise the King of Qin not to kill those captured soldiers and not to harm the local people... If I could see the world of a king of the world with my own eyes, maybe I would persuade the king to rest and not to continue to launch foreign wars..."
