Chapter 17 The Portuguese Court

What made Alexander miss the Moors more strongly than his wife, lover and sister was not a special orientation and hobby, but purely because he remembered Uriu's mind with Octavia's observation ability and his ability to mix into every corner like a fish in water, and gain everything he wanted to know when he would not attract attention at all.

However, Alexander also knew that the Moors' ability might be fully utilized in Italy, but in Iberia, he might not only be unable to move forward, but he might be thrown into prison or simply walk on the street for no reason and be beaten to death in the street.

The Iberian hatred of the Moors was a fierce result of centuries, and generations have been deeply engraved in their bones.

It seems that I can't count on Uriu here anymore, and Alexander can only rely on himself.

Fortunately, the news from Montina was pretty good. Barenti had completely adapted to her identity as the Duchess of Romantesia. Her rigorous and fair attitude made the officials and people of the Principal who were worried about the Duke's absence slowly relieved her as she performed during this period.

In fact, Barendi had already replaced him as Alexander's fiancée before getting married. However, it was different from now on that time. Barendi had become their legitimate lord's wife, which made many people feel completely different when facing her again.

Uriu is very busy now. He is the chief steward of Pisa, the imperial official of Montina, the former messenger of the king recognized by Ruosha, and the liaison officer of Cardinal Mahimo in Rome. This series of identities left Uriu almost no time to stop and rest. At the same time, he also had to pay close attention to the news from the Balkans.

The conflict between King Herva of Croatia and the fleeing Roye broke out again, but this time Roye seemed to have made enough preparations and received sufficient support from the Ottoman or some other place. So from the beginning, they landed along the coast of Croatia on Ottoman Navy ships, Roye put on a strong offensive posture, and for a period of time he did make Herva suffer with a fierce attack.

Herva's plan was disrupted. Alexander learned from the Balkan letters sent by Uliu that the conflict between Herva and Wallachia was finally concluded with Herva's name as her niece was going to study in Bucharest, and she acknowledged that Wallachia's imprisonment for Aloxia. This also proved that Herva had realized that it was obviously unwise to have conflicts with Caniola and Wallachia at the same time. The king finally decided to temporarily put away his already inflated ambitions to face the reality. He just took advantage of the easing of relations with Wallachia and withdrew the troops on the eastern border and then prepared to transfer to the west to put pressure on the Grand Duke of Carl in Kaniola, and Roye's re-invasion came.

What made Herva uneasy was that this time Roye not only learned the lessons of his failure on the battlefield last time, but also clearly realized the importance of diplomacy.

While using the Ottoman control of the southern Adriatic oceans, he frequently attacked along the coast of Croatia, he sent a large number of envoys to Kagnola, Wallachia and South Bosnia. They brought their promises and requests to the monarchs of these countries to Roye. In order to regain the title of Bosnian king, Roye made great concessions and heavy promises to everyone.

As a result, a civil war to compete for the crown of Northern Bosnia began near the southwestern coast of the Balkans. Because it received direct support from Ottomans and Southern Bosnia, Roye was unstoppable for a time and had the momentum to rush north toward Zagreb.

All of this made Alexander sigh that the Balkans are worthy of being one of the most turbulent places in Europe, while speculating on how Herva would deal with such a crisis. Now it seems that he only has one way to go.

Sure enough, while realizing that the situation was not good, Herva also sent envoys to various countries to mediate, she wrote a letter of help to Ladislas II in Prague.

Among the merchants in Zagreb, some of them were enthusiastic about telling what they heard. Now they have taken root in Prato in the Balkans. According to Prato, Herva was asking for help from Ladislas II, asking him to send troops to help him as the leader of the Balkan country.

Alexander, who learned about this, couldn't help but shook his head slightly for Herva's idea that he could not give up his ambition. It was obvious that he would rather admit that Ladislas II had sovereignty over Croatia afterwards than give up his dream of establishing his future status in the Balkans. At least in his opinion, it was far easier to approve of the kings of Bohemia and Hungary as the imperial electorate than to have to promise to give up territorial expansion in the Balkans.

The situation in the Balkans was changing. At sea, the Ottoman fleet tried to march north along the Adriatic Sea after defeating the Venetian fleet, which had been depressed by successive defeats. This not only scared the Venetians, but also completely scared many cities on the Italian peninsula on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The Earl of Josen and his son of Taranto sent several envoys to Naples in succession. After the Count's strong request, Ruosha had to send some of the Naples army and her Corsonas grenadier company to Aragon Castle in Taranto, preparing to fight with the Taranto people against the threats that might come from the sea.

Regarding Ruosha's letter, which was also forwarded by Uriu's people, Alexander was cautious this time and did not reply to the letter immediately. Instead, after reading the letter for a long time, he took the pen and started writing the letter after careful consideration.

Moreover, in the letter, he was extremely cautious and did not tell Ruosha in a very confident way as usual to believe in the judgment she made.

He was so careful because as time went by, Alexander discovered that history was slowly turning towards another path he was not familiar with.

Perhaps this turn is not so obvious now, but even so many things have changed tremendously. Alexander knew that when he made judgments on some major things, he could no longer use the historical trajectory as he did in the past. At least according to historical development, although the Ottoman Navy did become the master of the Mediterranean for a long time because of the capture of the Venetians' last colony in the Mediterranean, because Bayesette II was still healthy and vigorously promoting his erosion policy on the Balkans, the Ottomans paid more attention to land rather than sea.

Now, because the Sultan was seriously injured in the city of Bucharest, the Ottoman Empire's ambition to invade the European continent on land was set, but this instead made their navy hope to regain the losses on land through victory at sea.

So although he knew that even though the Ottomans had once penetrated into the Adriatic Sea in history, they had never launched landing operations on the Italian Peninsula for various reasons, he could not say so sure now.

There were indeed too many things that changed, and even before Alexander, when he heard that Manuel summoned Da Gama three times in a week, he couldn't help but be surprised by Manuel's enthusiasm for the New World.

In Alexander's impression, the Portuguese officially explored and occupied the New World more than ten years later. Although they had sent some expeditions before, due to the constraints of the Pope's Meridian and other reasons, the Portuguese, including Manuel I, paid more attention to the African route to India. However, as speculation that the new colony was actually an undiscovered new world spread, the Portuguese increased their exploration of the New World.

Now Manuel has obviously shown his interest in the new colony in advance. It can be guessed that the king and his wife who came from some palaces had a fierce quarrel over the new colony.

Of course, Maria did not want Manuel to be anxious to get involved in the new colony to cause conflicts between her husband and her parents. She tried to dissuade Manuel, but her unpopular character quickly angered Manuel. After a quarrel, the king accused Maria of thinking about her parents rather than her husband and the future Portuguese king because of anger, which made Maria, who was already very annoyed, even more angry.

She shook her sleeves in front of the servant, even if Manuel stopped loudly behind her.

But it is no wonder that Maria was so angry, because Manuel's words accidentally stabbed a sensitive pain in Maria's heart.

Maria's sister, Isabella of Aragon, left behind a son Miguel after she died of labor in difficulty two years ago.

According to the inheritance law, although he has not been appointed as the crown prince, it is undoubtedly true that Miguel, the eldest son, will become the king of Portugal in the future.

Maria has given birth to a daughter for her. Although she is young, healthy and pretty, she is not worried about having more children with Manuel in the future, but the crown of the Portuguese king does not seem to fall on her children.

Although Maria never showed any abnormality, it could not stop people from having various speculations about such things, especially when it was involved in the throne, which made this speculation even more natural.

Some people even speculate that Maria would be so obsessed with the construction of the Lisbon Cathedral, so she would not hesitate to spend one-fifth of the annual treasury to build this large scale, and it was destined to consume huge manpower and material resources for a long time. Perhaps it was because the future king could not be her child, so she had no need to save for others.

Such a legend has actually reached Maria's ears long ago. Now Manuel's words have immediately stimulated Maria. She retreated halfway regardless of etiquette, and even did not consider the king's face at all.

Manuel was completely angry. He felt that his wife had made him lose his dignity as a king, and the argument also proved the things that many people guessed.

The king and his wife seem to have disagreements and contradictions for future heirs of the throne.

For a time, there was a lot of talk in Lisbon. From nobles to civilians, everyone realized that something big might happen.

Since the death of Isabella of Aragon, she and Manuel's son Miguel have been carefully cared for. Manuel is very concerned about this son, and her sister seems much gentler than Maria, which is why Manuel is obsessed with his first wife.

Now, as the conflict with Maria occurred, Manuel suddenly realized that he had made a big mistake before, that is, he had never established the crown prince's action, which seemed to give Maria a wrong signal.

Maria may indeed love the children left by her sister, but family affection in front of the throne was too fragile. Manuel began to worry. When she thought of Maria's mother, Queen Isabella, how did she treat her half-brother and his daughter, Manuel suddenly felt that maybe she had really made a big mistake.

On the fourth day after the quarrel with the queen, Manuel suddenly sent someone to invite the Archbishop of Lisbon into the Castle of St. Joje, which immediately attracted the attention of many people.

People speculated about the reason why the king suddenly invited the archbishop on such a normal day. As Archbishop Buruzon, who had been intimately talking with the king for a long time, left the castle, a piece of news swept across the entire Lisbon like a tornado on the sea. The king of Lisbon was about to become the crown prince!

This news almost made the whole of Lisbon boil in an instant, but for Maria, the news was like a slap in the face.

Maria's mood is indeed complicated for her sister's child. This is her nephew and her son. If she lives longer than Manuel in the future, she may become her king. Because of this, whenever she faces Prince Milg, Aria's heart is so complicated that it is hard to describe, so she simply rarely sees that child.

But she has never treated the child with any unfair treatment. However, whether it is Manuel's actions or Lis's own attitude, she feels like she is like a vicious stepmother, ready to murder the poor orphan left by her ex-wife anytime and anywhere, and now the poor child is finally over.

Maria felt anger and irrepressible anger that made her wish she could find someone to vent her immediately, but she knew that if that might happen, there might be worse rumors soon, so she not only tried to restrain her feelings and could not bear it, but also had to pretend to be calm and attend the commemorative ceremony of the arrival of the Virgin for several consecutive days.

But when she appeared in front of everyone, Maria clearly felt the subtle changes in people facing her. It seemed that everyone was keeping a little distance from her intentionally or unintentionally. Even those who usually complimented her seemed to show some restraint and distantness.

Maria wore a half-mask inlaid with gems to block most of her expression, but even her tight lips betrayed her.

When she finally persisted until the end, she stood up and left the throne with Manuel and walked into the corridor not far away, Maria immediately accelerated her pace. She ignored the servants and followers next to her with a look of surprise and at a loss, threw Manuel behind her and quickly walked forward to leave her husband.

Maria walked blindly in the palace until a figure appeared in front of her not far away.

Maria looked at Alexander who seemed to be waiting for her in surprise, and then a layer of coldness appeared on her face.

She had no good feelings for this special envoy from the Holy See. As far as she knew, it was a navigator around this person who encouraged Manuel to explore the new colony, and the duke had a lot of contact with Juana, but this was enough to make her feel hostile to this person.

"Your Majesty, I have just received a letter from Sicily," Alexander handed a letter to Mary. "Although it is inappropriate for me to do so, I cannot ignore the consequences of this matter, even the relationship between Castile and Aragon and the Holy See."

"What?" Maria took the letter suspiciously. When she opened it, she only looked at it a few times, and her expression changed instantly. "Is this written by Gonzalo?"

"Yes, it's obvious that General Gonzalo is considering making peace with the Ottomans."
