Chapter 15 The New World

After the main training anniversary in early October, Alexander did not stop his pace in Portugal, but instead his activities became frequent.

He had heard of Manuel in history, and after seeing the king with his own eyes, he also had a new understanding of Manuel I's character.

Portugal has always seemed to be a suppressed younger brother beside Spain after the reunification. Even before the era of the Two Kings, Castilla had been pressing steadily on Portugal.

This made the kings of Portugal feel breathless. Even Portugal would become a major sailing power. Prince Enrique would be so persistent in opening sea routes. Most of the reason is that Portugal was surrounded by Castilla on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean. It can be said that if there was no channel from the sea to the outside world, Portugal would be completely blocked from land in a corner of the Iberian Peninsula.

This is obviously unbearable for any country. The kings of Portuguese have been committed to breaking the siege of the Castiles, but this idea is obviously not easy to achieve on land. Compared with his huge neighbor, Portugal is too small and too weak. In this case, a group of Portuguese represented by Prince Enrique would spare no effort to try to break the passive situation of being sealed on the peninsula by opening up the overseas world.

In this regard, Manuel I was no different from the kings before him, but there were some things that other kings did not have, that is, their almost blind self-confidence in themselves, and even their shocking self-inflation of the man chosen by God.

If his queen Maria was an inappropriate religious fanatic, then Manuel regarded his luck as a messenger who believed he was to fulfill a certain mission God had given to the world because of his unexpected gain of the throne.

He firmly believed that Portugal would rise in his own hands, and not only that, he even believed that the mission of saving the world of Christ was to be accomplished by him. In this regard, he did not even take the Vatican seriously in his heart, because he felt that the Holy See was too weak to the pagans, and the pagans far away in the East should be treated not by polite messengers but by cold and sharp swords and spears.

And if we were to form a crusade to fight against the pagans, Manuel felt that he was the commander of the army for granted.

Alexander saw Manuel's incredible belief in the castle of St. John. He was invited to watch a performance in the castle, which was actually a small military exercise. When he saw those armies wearing armor, flags and covers embroidered with eye-catching cross signs on the castle's martial arts field, Alexander was stunned at first, and then he felt the illusion that he had flowed back two centuries.

With the defeat and death of King Louis IX of France's expedition to Tunisia, the vigorous Crusader movement ended in the late 13th century. Although several such expeditions followed, the scale and influence could not be compared with the scale of nearly a century and a half from the early 12th century to the late 13th century. By the 15th century, the expedition had become a far-reaching thing. Even the Battle of Varna in 1444, which claimed to have decided that the Ottomans and Europe's offensive and defensive alternation was actually no longer comparable to that era.

But now, Alexander seemed to have a crusader who had broken through the historical curtain, carrying the decay smell from the dry mummies, and then a group of undead armies wearing armor and holding crosses came to their faces.

"This is the greatest move, isn't it the Duke, the Eastern Expedition is the most amazing feat in European history," Manuel I said to the army standing with him in a slightly flaunting tone as he stood with him and kept running back and forth on the martial arts field, raising dust. "Please don't mind me saying this, if possible, I would rather suggest that the Holy See focus on more practical aspects than just paying attention to the holy land."

"Your Majesty, what you said is more practical..." Alexander turned his eyes to the ground below, and he saw a small team of cavalry rushing out from behind a wooden fence that symbolized the castle. The front knight held a spear of ancient style in his hand. "Please forgive me, that would not be..."

"Yes, holy gun," Manuel I nodded, "This is a miracle of the Eastern Expedition again."

Alexander nodded slowly. At this time, he was sure that Manuel was serious because the fanaticism in his eyes really couldn't be pretended, which made Alexander suddenly feel that perhaps compared to Maria's blind belief, Manuel was a truly crazy person because of self-righteousness.

"Duke, you should tell the Vatican everything you see here," said Manuel suddenly lowered his voice and said, "I think a lot of things here are abnormal, at least not what I want to see."

"Sorry, your majesty, can I ask what you think everything here should look like?"

"Of course, I know that our army nobles and people are all pious, but it is abnormal now. In Portugal, people are only concerned about how to conduct a more grand mass and build a larger church, while in other places people simply care about their own affairs. This is not right. You must know that with the money and manpower, we can build a new army of expeditions. But now those precious resources are wasted on such matters. Of course, I am not saying that mass and building a church are wrong, but it is not that important than establishing an army that can fight against pagans, right?"

Manuel seemed a little excited. He spread his hands and kept talking to Alexander. Then he tried to calm his tone. After lowering his tone, he said again: "That's right, I hope you can prove everything here to the Vatican. I mean here we are too far from the Holy See, so many things are unclear in the Vatican. The queen's mother is a very wise queen, but she seems too keen to discover those miracles in her country. She seems to be obsessed with making Castilla a holy place in her mind. It is said that she even named the villages that seem to be plausible in some places as the names of the places where Jesus was born in the Bible. I think if you want to go to Valladot, you should be able to pay attention to these."

Alexander nodded slightly, and he had almost gradually understood what Manuel said.

Manuel obviously always had a deep sense of war with his two kingly parents-in-law. Even though he married their two daughters in a row, this kind of wariness not only did not diminish, but seemed to be stronger.

That's why Manuel used this invitation to say these words to him.

Isabella's ambitions were indeed too obvious. Her various actions in trying to establish a new holy land in Iberia were so obvious and seemed to be completely uncovered. It was no wonder that it would cause Manuel's uneasiness. After all, if one day his mother-in-law suddenly decided to unify the entire Iberia in the name of the secular monarch of the heavenly kingdom on earth, then he might face a disaster.

Thinking of this, a strange thought suddenly flashed through Alexander's mind, that Manuel's fanaticism in trying to re-form the Crusader might actually be an excuse. He hopes to prove that he is also pious or even crazier in this way. Only in this way can he have a reason to compete with Isabella, who is increasingly ambitious.

Alexander was fascinated by this idea, and once this idea arose, he felt something plausible when he saw Manuel's various actions.

Perhaps the impression of the trade empire established by the Portuguese later was too deep-rooted, and Alexander always equated them with cunning merchants with greedy colonists, because in his opinion, the people of this country were always concerned about the pursuit of wealth, and in this regard they were no different from any country that was keen on opening up territories and plunders.

"Your Majesty, of course I can report your views to the Vatican, and this is indeed my mission, but before that I think you should also listen to my advice," Alexander said to the somewhat puzzled Manuel. "You should have known that Columbus has discovered new land through his route."

"India, we all know that he arrived on the east coast of India. Duke, what advice do you have?" Manuel frowned slightly. He did know this, and he summoned Da Gama himself not long ago. Although the prospects for the new route that Da Gama and the James Columbus showed him were extremely beautiful, Manuel still rejected them while excited. Now he heard Alexander's old words and reiterated it, which made him a little unhappy. "We have a very obvious boundary, and you should know this more clearly than this."

"The world dividing line designated by His Majesty the Pope."

"Yes, because of this, I can live in peace with the Queen's parents. Otherwise, maybe our fleets would have to fight to the death for the territories overseas. But now we are all in peace, right? That Columbus may have made a lot on his route, but I am not losing."

Manuel said with a slight pride, and at the same time he looked at Alexander strangely. Although the Pope was born in Valencia, he would not think that Alexander VI would definitely favor the couple. After all, the Vatican forces are complicated and he is not without a spokesperson there.

So Manuel was not very worried about the Pope's fairness, but even so he would not think that Alexander VI would be enemies of the couple in turn. So what happened to the Pope's "son-in-law" who encouraged him to pay attention to Columbus' route?

Feeling Manuel's skeptical eyes, Alexander felt that it was time to say something that really touched him.

"Your Majesty, I will remind you this because there is a rumor that may be absurd, but if it is really too incredible," Alexander leaned forward and said in the king's ear. "I don't know if you have heard of a navigator named Amerigo Vespussi. I think your chief official of the sailing office, Eliodor Don Antonio, can introduce you to the specific situation of this person. What I want to say is that at this time this person should be exploring the so-called Indian coast and archipelago that Columbus discovered, and according to his speculation, it is likely that Columbus arrived not India."

"Not India, where is that?" Manuel asked in surprise.

"Americo Wispsi believes that what Columbus discovered was a place that no explorer had ever visited before, and it was also a land that had never been marked on any map. That is to say, it was a new area that no one had known before, and the area was large."

Manuel's face finally changed.

"You mean, it's a place that no one knows even before the Lord?" The king asked carefully. After all, in this era, many people think that the world has been completely explored. It can be said that there is no place in the world that is unknown, but now Alexander's words make Manuel unable to sit still.

What does it mean to be a place that has not been discovered by its predecessors and has huge wealth? "Which place is very big?"

"It's not clear yet." Alexander knew that it was impossible to say something too detailed at once. Even Americo Vespsi's speculation about the New World has not yet appeared. According to the time, Americo Vespsi should be exploring the New World at this time, but it will take a few years to question Columbus's discovery.

But that doesn't matter. Americo Vespsi couldn't know that someone would cheer for his achievements in advance, nor would he know that there would be no chance.

"But according to the speculation of Americo Vespsi, perhaps Columbus completely underestimated the size of the land he found, which was beyond human expectations," he continued to say, "When Manuel's breathing slowly became solemn, Alexander continued, "The places where Columbus arrived were warm and even a little hot, according to his description of those places, the climate of those places was similar to those in Africa, and according to the study of Americo Vespsi, he found that there seemed to be long coastlines in the north or further south of that land, and those places were even a little cold, which means that there was probably a much larger land than we thought, a real new world. My Majesty, I think you should know more than anyone else, what would it mean if such a land really means."

Manuelmer nodded slowly without saying a word. His eyes were no longer paying attention to the knights running back and forth in the field below, but instead looked at the railing in front of him with a steady look.

After a while, he suddenly turned around and said to Alexander: "Let your Columbus come to see me."

"Sorry, your Majesty, James went to Castilla," Alexander continued to see Manuel's face angry expression, "in fact, he rushed to the scene because he heard that his brother Christopher Columbus seemed to be in trouble, but as far as I know, he seemed to have told Da Gama about what he knew about the new route."
