Chapter VII Archduke Karl

The Grand Duke's team was not large. As Knight Moleco said, the Principal of Kagnola had to disband the army, which was originally not large, because it received the order from the Sultan. According to the order of Valiceth II, even Carl de Kagnola, as the Grand Duke, had to surrender helplessly. He brought only a dozen followers, and although he was carrying weapons, none of these people were wearing armor.

Grand Duke Carl was very excited and ordered the follower to keep blowing the trumpet when he was still far away. However, he was obviously wary of the Montina army that the princess' convoy arrived with him, so he sent a personal visit to meet his aunt and fiancée in advance.

Grand Duke Carl did not welcome the arrival of Montina's army. He hoped that these foreigners could leave the territory of the Principal of Cagnola as soon as possible. So when this person in person met Princess Cagnola and later paid a visit to Alexander, he first performed his due etiquette, and then directly asked the Grand Duke when the Montina's army would leave their country.

"We may need to make some adjustments," Alexander ignored the ugly look of his accompanying look, and instead asked the Knight Moleco to accompany the princess into the city. "My army will make adjustments outside the city, and I hope to see the Grand Duke himself."

After taking Alexander's words to the Grand Duke, Grand Duke Carl Cocagnola hesitated for a long time, but in the end he agreed to meet the count who came from afar.

A nobleman from Rome, with an army, always received attention, and what made Grand Duke Carl more concerned was that he wanted to know why the foreign nobleman traveled with his aunt and fiancée.

Grand Duke Carl Cocagnola is a young man with a low head and rough face.

When he was riding on the horse, he looked at him, except that he looked a little shorter than the one around him, and it would not make people feel that there was anything strange, but when he approached or dismounted, his obviously special body shape was exposed.

Grand Duke Carl's spine was raised high, his short and thick neck was almost completely trapped between his shoulders, which made him look like an animal squatting on the ground and leaning forward.

And perhaps due to the influence of hunchback, his legs looked a little strange, and he had a semicircular circle that seemed to be able to run across his legs.

When he saw Montina's army from afar, the great duke showed a look of surprise. He looked back at the followers beside him with a strange look, and then looked carefully at the Montina army, who was slowly advancing along the road in the distance.

And when he saw Alexander, who was accompanying Princess Caniola, slowly coming out of the team and riding a horse in his direction, the Grand Duke immediately showed his interest.

"Have you noticed that the soldiers of that army were actually wearing the same clothes," the grand duke said to his followers curiously, "I don't know how much it costs to do this, but don't you think this is strange?"

"Your Highness, there are Bohemians among them," one of the men reminded the Grand Duke. "They are not wearing the same kind of clothing."

"But this is still very strange, isn't it? These Roman nobles are such weird people," said the Grand Duke interestingly, until he saw Princess Caniola sitting in the carriage looking at him from the thick open curtains.

The grand duke obviously longed to meet his fiancée, so he couldn't wait to stop the carriage and urged the horse forward. When he bent down from the horse to salute the two princesses in the carriage, his eyes narrowed into a slit due to excitement.

Then he straightened his waist, which was not easy to stand up, and walked over the carriage and looked at Alexander on the other side.

"So you are the count from Rome?" The grand duke looked at Alexander a little pickyly. "You are much younger than I thought."

"So what do you think it should look like?" Alexander asked.

"You should be older. As far as I know, the nobles in your place are no longer interested in fighting the pagans, so you just watch our land constantly being taken away by the Ottomans, but no one wants to help us."

"Your Highness, now I'm here."

Facing this grand duke who kept complaining as soon as he met, Alexander was indeed a little curious. From some information he had learned along the way, he had a rough understanding of the current situation of the Principal of Cagnola. It was obvious that compared with those great powers that could make Sudan have some concerns, the Principal of Cagnola was not very good, especially after last year, they rashly offended Moldova because of miscalculation of the situation, their lives were even worse.

"Can I see your army?" the grand duke asked suddenly, and without waiting for Alexander to agree, he urged the horse to cross the carriage and head towards the team of hunting guards in the distance.

Alexander turned his horse's head but did not follow. He watched the Grand Duke walk to the front of the guards' team from afar, and then jog along the line as if reviewing.

"idiot."

Alexander heard a very low voice coming from a distance, and then he saw the young Prince Galley looking at his future brother-in-law riding on a horse with contempt.

Grand Duke Carl was not slow, and soon ran back to the carriage. His face was full of excitement, and he kept saying to Alexander: "Earl, you have a very strange army. If you didn't know it was impossible, I even suspected that they were all nobles. You must know that even in the courts of Moldova and Wallachia, I have never seen such a decent group of people dressed in such a decent dress."

"My simplest request for my army is decent," Alexander smiled at the Grand Duke. What made him notice was that the Grand Duke seemed to be a little too excited, so that Princess Caniola had to speak out to remind him, and he remembered to invite guests into the city.

"But your army cannot enter," the grand duke seemed a little regretful when he said this. "You can bring your captains and officers with you, and then I will arrange for someone to find a camp for your army."

"I think the princess may have something to tell you about this." Alexander looked at Princess Caniola sitting in the carriage. He didn't know if the princess would break her promise just because she finally arrived at the place, but he didn't care about this, or he still hoped that something would happen.

However, the princess obviously had no such plan. Although her eyes were a little hostile when she looked at Alexander, she finally nodded: "I think there are some things here that may need me to explain clearly."

Grand Duke Carl seemed to listen to his aunt very much. He was stunned for a moment and nodded immediately. Then he couldn't wait to get off the horse with the help of his followers, and then climbed onto the carriages of the two princesses.

But when he was about to sit next to Princess Ko Marchidovi, Prince Galli, who had been beside him, let out a dissatisfied "hum".

"Xiao Jiali, I'll be your brother-in-law. Now let me talk more with my fiancée," the grand duke talked to the prince, and then immediately turned his head and asked Princess Marchidouvi enthusiastically.

Alexander looked at this scene with interest. He noticed the unhappy expression on Prince Gali's face and also noticed the grand duke's seemingly overly enthusiastic, which made him vaguely guess the turbulent and intrigue within the Duke of Caniola.

The city of Ljubljana is surrounded by mountains, because of the huge lake in the city, the entire city is divided into three different parts.

What surprised Alexander was that there were both Catholic and Orthodox churches in this city.

This aroused Alexander's interest. After all, the conflict between Orthodox and Catholic Church has lasted for thousands of years. To put it carefully, the grudges between the two sides are much more complicated than those of the pagans.

And this situation in Ljubljana is really not only rare, it can be said to be a miracle.

As if seeing Alexander's surprise, the Knight Moleco came to Alexander and marched forward with him.

"Caniola is a place dominated by two churches," the knight's voice showed some helplessness. "The Duke of Marcidovi had to change his faith because he was coerced by the Earl of Cepes in Transylvania, and most of Cainiola was still a devout Orthodox."

The words of the Knight made Alexander instantly understand a lot about this country. It is obvious that the marriage between Grand Duke Carl and the Princess Marchidouvi is not only related to the integrity of the principality, but also involves the compromise between two different local churches. The young Prince Galli's contempt for Grand Duke should also be inseparable from this.

But the Knight obviously hadn't finished speaking. Looking at the house vaguely visible across the lake in the distance, the Knight Moleco shook his head and continued: "The Marcidovi family once became the rulers of Kagnola. This was decades ago, when the king ordered those churches to be built in Ljubljana."

Listening to the somewhat resentful tone of the Knight, Alexander nodded slightly. He could understand the knight's seemingly dissatisfied mood. Although perhaps more of this was actually a dispute over power, he did not want to expose it.

But when Cepas from Transylvania heard this legendary or bloody, cruel and mysterious name, Alexander really couldn't face it calmly.

The legend about Transylvania is so famous. The story of the famous Count Dracula once made countless people almost fascinated by exploring various secrets about vampires, and Transylvania is the birthplace of this famous legend.

Just thinking about the legendary vampire count involved, Alexander felt a little weird and curious.

Dracula, this is what people call the Earl of Transylvania, Cepes, which was originally just a nickname, and later became a representative of vampires. Even if we put aside the absurd rumors, the story of the Earl of Cepes himself is full of blood and cruelty.

But it was obviously something that happened decades ago. Alexander was not interested in what Transylvania looks like now. He was concerned about how to find Sophia as soon as possible.

The Ljubljana Palace is as distinctive as this city, or it is better to be shabby. The palace that can be seen through is not large at first sight. Apart from the few marble statues standing on a low gray wall, it also adds a little magnificence to this building. The entire palace can be described as shabby.

Grand Duke Carl had already prepared for his fiancee's arrival, so when they just walked into the yard of the palace, a strong smell of cooked meat had already floated towards them.

In the open space on the side of the palace yard, the hot water in a few large pots was pouring with water, and the large pieces of beef rolling up from the bottom of the water from time to time gave a mouth-watering aroma.

"The fattest beef and big chunks of honey, as well as elk and goat meat, I believe there is enough food for me to make you not want to leave." Grand Duke Carl said as if showing off to Prince Galli on the side. He did not notice that his words made Princess Marchidouvi, who was walking on the other side of him, slightly changed his expression.

"There are many cattle and sheep in March," Prince Galli said a little dissatisfied, and then he seemed to remember something and suddenly turned back to Alexander and asked "Where is Rome, does Rome have so many livestock?"

When Alexander suddenly asked about himself, he was a little surprised, then shook his head and smiled: "Yes, but not as much as here."

Seeing Prince Galli seemingly disappointed, Alexander continued: "But the Romans like to eat fish. In addition to cattle and sheep, there are whole smoked fish and chickens on their dining table. Sometimes, guests will roast a goose. If they are honored guests, they will smoke a peacock with honey juice soaked in saffron and nematode branches."

"Peacock?" Prince Galli asked in disbelief, and the people next to him seemed to be attracted by Alexander's words. Even Grand Duke Carl was a little excited and listened while walking.

“As for fruits, many people like to eat grapes and lemons.”

"We have lemons here, too," said Grand Prince Carl immediately, and he did not forget to smile at Princess Marcidovi. "I have prepared a lot of good lemons and apples for you. I believe that eating some fruit before the meal will make you more enjoyable."

"It's true," Alexander was not upset by the Grand Duke's interruption. "But sometimes the lemon juice was poured on half-cooked beef, and then served with a nice glass of wine."

"Oh, Count, I'm a little hungry," Grand Duke Carl said, unable to help but speed up, but even so he still did not forget to reach out and hold Princess Marcidouvi's hand. "We must treat my fiancée and family with guests from afar. As for your and my aunt, I will see you off."

Princess Caniola, who has been silent since entering the palace, glanced at her nephew but remained silent. However, what surprised Alexander was that when she sat down, she found that Princess Caniola had actually sat next to him on his own initiative.

Perhaps the seat was specially raised, and the grand duke looked no different from others after sitting down. He first raised his glass and warmly thanked God for his fiancee's arrival, and then welcomed every guest who arrived.

The Grand Duke kept drinking, while the relatives around him kept suggesting toasting their glasses in various names, until the Grand Duke suddenly said to Alexander: "Earl, I am sorry that the Ottomans are coming, so your people can only leave Caniola as soon as possible."

As Grand Duke Carl finished his voice, the hall fell into silence.

Everyone looked at Alexander, and Busako, who was sitting on the other side of Alexander, noticed the meat-cutting knives that the Grand Duke seemed to caress intentionally or unintentionally in his hands.

"You have to leave," Grand Duke Carl's face turned gloomy at this time. "I don't know why you came to Carolola, and I don't care about this, but you can't stay in my principality, as this will cause trouble for Carolola."

Alexander just listened quietly at first, but when he was about to speak, he suddenly felt that the corner of his clothes was being pulled secretly. When he glanced to the side, he unexpectedly saw that the person who was pulling his clothes was actually Princess Alexandra Cocagnola.
