Chapter 23 The Door of Death (Part 2)

All day long, Ding Mu's mind was occupied by the mysterious key that appeared in the bishop's living room. From that key was placed so casually in the corner of the bookcase, he was sure that Alfonso didn't seem to know its function. In fact, Ding Mu didn't know what special thing was about the key and the cotton paper that seemed to be full of alchemy secret words.

Because he was worried, Ding Mu found a few classical books that were considered to be a subject of several disciplines according to Alfonso's request and left the living room. After returning to the library, he carefully took out the keys and cotton paper he had hidden before and observed them carefully. The two similar keys aroused his curiosity, although he didn't know what could be revealed from it.

But apart from the large pieces of dry and difficult characters on the cotton paper and the cumbersome patterns carved on the keys, he really couldn't see any mystery. For a moment, Ding Mu felt that maybe he was just thinking about random things, or that he had read too many legendary stories about this era before, and he could not help but think that everything was related to conspiracy and tricks.

However, when it comes to conspiracy, Ding Mu began to think that some of the previous speculations might be wrong. Although he still believes that the priest has an inseparable relationship with the assassination of the Palace Prime Minister, judging from various signs, the priest really has no reason to murder the Palace Prime Minister.

Ding Mu knew his current situation. Although he was just a small person, it would not work if he didn't figure out some things.

He began to think that he had a chance to advance by saving the palace prime minister, but he inexplicably changed his direction because he became Alfonso's library treasurer. If the priest was really related to that conspiracy, Ding Mu was worried that one day after the truth was revealed, he would become a victim of the power struggle between the two people.

Not to mention the ignorance of this kind of struggle, even if you watch and seep the blood, it will be enough for a small person like him to drink a pot.

There is also Sophia, who doesn't want her to be involved, and he promised Sophia that she wants to live a peaceful life, even if it's for the sake of living safely to the end of her life in the future, Ding Mu felt that he had to find a way to figure out his situation first.

Some things really come in with one foot, so don’t think about going back.

As the dusk fell, a follower came to the library to convey the priest's orders. Ding Mu immediately put a box in a box with the books he found in the library.

To his surprise, the guests Alfonso mentioned were not in the Bishop Monreale Palace, but in the city of Palermo. When they arrived in the city, it was completely dark.

Large areas of lights projected from the towering windows. Sometimes the doors that were closed during the day are completely open at night. When passing by the houses, you can always smell some meat and grilled fish. Some houses that look very grand even have a strong and spicy aroma.

"If we hurry up, we can have a good meal," the follower urged impatiently. "You know that not every day can I eat meat patties mixed with quail meat and blood sauce, and wine, which are transported from the monastery of Orchid."

The wines of Blood Sauce and the Orchid Monastery were of course very attractive, but Ding Mu seemed not lucky to enjoy these delicacies. When they first entered the Palermo Cathedral, they were called by another servant who had been waiting for them, and then entered a room behind the church along a very narrow stairway at the side door.

Alfonso was waiting for them there.

The priest was rarely wearing half a pair of robes today. Except for not wearing a crown and long shawls, his outfit was somewhat too formal.

"Did those books be brought?" asked the priest. Seeing Ding Mu open the wooden box, he looked a little and closed the lid. Seeing Ding Mu looking at him, the priest smiled and said with a hint of emotion, "Maybe you would wonder why I care about these books so much, but if you know the real value of these things, you won't think I'm making a big deal."

Of course I know how precious these things are, Ding Mu said in his heart.

"I don't mean money," as if I understand Ding Mu's thoughts, the priest waved his hand as if he was correcting his thoughts. "Some things should not be measured by money, of course, compared with what can be obtained, it is still worth it."

Ding Mu stood beside him and listened to the priest's words. He knew that Alfonso's words were not said to him. Perhaps the priest had some troubles to relieve, or simply wanted to vent something. In short, the smartest move now is to be a quiet listener.

Sure enough, after saying a few inexplicable words, Alfonso seemed to be feeling better. He waved to Ding Mu: "Okay, you've worked very hard today, go eat something. I know how terrible the work in the library is. Tomorrow you can find some people to be your helper and then organize a clear list of books for me."

"Thank you very much, sir," Ding Mu bowed a little and was about to leave, but was called by Alfonso. "Alexander, do you live with Osborne?"

"Yes, I live upstairs in his tailor shop now. He confiscated my rent, which left me with expenses."

"The tailor is really a good friend," the priest smiled slightly. "Okay, you can go."

Ding Mu nodded and bowed again, but he felt more thoughtful when he turned around and left.

The priest didn't seem to like Osborne much.

It's no wonder that whether it's Alfonso or the Aragon officials, how could these nobles look down on a small tailor?

In their opinion, Osborne was just a favored jester beside Gomez, or perhaps not even a jester, but a complete clown.

But these people probably never thought that such a clown would become a hot character in Castilla in the future.

Ding Mu walked forward along the stairway when he came. The corridor was very deep. The lights in the hall shone in the gaps in the hollow lattice windows embedded on one wall, dividing the corridor into pieces with different light and darkness.

A slightly high voice in the hall attracted Ding Mu, who was about to walk out of the corridor. He looked inside the hollowed-out window and suddenly saw a familiar figure below the bright corridor in the hall.

Ding Mu couldn't help but stop. He looked at the old man who was whispering to Alfonso who had returned to the hall with some surprise. Then he quickly searched for other places, and soon saw a tall young man who was trying to have a good conversation with the Aragorn officer who led the army to capture Bishop Malecho.

These two people were the strange pair of masters and apprentices he met on the way to Palermo.

Ding Mu, who had already reached the door, stopped immediately. Although he was not worried about the dangers that these two people would be seen, he thought that the appearance of the master and apprentice was not that simple as long as he thought about the conversation between the two people he had heard before.

And he soon discovered that the young man who had previously shown extraordinary identities in the Gypsy camp seemed to be deliberately concealing his identity, so that Alfonso's attention was entirely on his teacher rather than him.

Seeing the follower who led him had already looked puzzled because he stopped, Ding Mu knew that he could not delay any more. He calmed down a little and followed behind and walked through the small door into the hall.

There are not many people in the hall, because the Bishops' Palace in Palermo has always been located in Monreale, so although the Palermo Cathedral is more magnificent than Monreale Cathedral, it is never the church of Palermo.

"Dear friend, I hope your arrival will bode well."

Standing at a table not far from the pillar, Ding Mu could hear what the priest was saying to the old man.

"I'm just an old man in his twilight years," the old man was very modest. He touched his beard with a little emotion, and then looked at the students a little farther away. "I just hope that I can pass on my meager knowledge to my students in my lifetime, so that I won't feel regretful even if I don't go to heaven in the future."

"Please forgive me for saying this, God will definitely let you into heaven in order not to let the devil succeed," said the priest with a smile. "Although my words are indeed disrespectful, I believe this is the truth, and I firmly believe that true awe is more precious than verbal piety."

"Then I will thank you for your blessings for the priest," the old man responded with a smile, and then his expression became serious. "Maybe I was not here, but I hope to hear more about Palermo from you. You know that the students of the University of Paris are very concerned about war. They may not support the king, but they are very interested in everything they have been born here, especially about Florence and Rome. After all, everything there is so attractive. Even Sicily has made many Parisians yearn for it. I have seen many fascinating things on my way to come. If you bring these news back, it will definitely cause a big sensation."

The old man's words seemed to arouse Alfonso's interest, and he signaled his followers to hold the book-packing box and gently open it.

Even though he was a little far away, Ding Mu still heard a faint sound of breath. He tilted his head and looked at it, and happened to see the look of astonishment and surprise on the old man's face.

"Othimus, Thales, and Posidoni," the old man looked at the books in an excited voice. His serious expression could not help but show a greedy look, as if he wanted to completely capture the countless knowledge contained in it. "This is a real priceless treasure. If one of them is enough to be satisfied, I must say that God really loves you, and this will even make you feel jealous."

"Your jealousy is completely unnecessary, because only sharing of real treasures is priceless," said the priest, sending the box gently to the old man. "This is yours, my friend, bring them back to Paris. Although I know that the University of Paris has a rich collection, this is a little bit of my heart."

"You are so generous, priest," the old man bowed slightly. "Please allow me to kiss your hand, Lord, for your generosity, I believe that my protector, the Duke of Orleans, will be grateful."

Ding Mu noticed that when the old man mentioned the Duke of Orleans, the tall brown young man standing on the other side had a strange smile on his face.
