Chapter 41 Mercenary Combray

Another heavy snow fell in Rome. This snow was even heavier than the one that had been in winter before. Looking at the snowflakes floating in outside the window, Alexander stretched the thick blanket covered with his body. Seeing Sophia who was tying her head into his arms like a lazy cat, Alexander couldn't help but smile.

Unexpectedly, Sophia, who had always been lively, became lazy after the winter began. Especially as the weather became colder, she began to collect all kinds of food like a squirrel during the winter. Then she curled up and squeezed herself into Alexander's arms like a large cat, and never left again.

Even at night, she walked through the door in the two of her rooms several times to Alexander's bed close to him, using his body to warm herself.

The result was that Alexander had to work hard to get up from the bed for several days in the morning, and he was blinded throughout the day.

Sophia obviously didn't know how great she was to Alexander, and she didn't know how much he felt when he looked at her curled up and sleeping with her chest, while seducing him, she also made him suffer because she had to endure it.

However, Alexander still hopes that this winter will never pass, especially in this snowy day that is so cold that people don’t want to get up from bed, the more appointments you make.

Perhaps God heard Alexander's pious prayer, and the snow suddenly rose and never stopped.

On the first day, no one cared about the snow.

The next day, people braved the snow and went out to do business.

On the third day, there were only some children who made snowmen and played snowball fights on the street.

Finally, from the fourth day, the people in Rome were a little panicked.

When a servant of the Order Conference came to Marino Palace in the thick snow, Alexander was holding Sophia in front of the floor stove with a pile of dry firewood to keep warm.

Alexander was holding a spoon in one hand and wrapping Sophia's waist with the other hand, and pouring something that looked dark into Sophia's mouth.

Sophia, who was flushed, kept shaking her head. Her face looked a little bad, but she still insisted on not drinking the things in the spoon.

"Sofia is obedient, and a cold is a terrible thing." Alexander coaxed and persuaded him. He was a little worried. Although he believed that he could deal with a common cold and fever, and Sofia's cold was not serious, he did not dare to be careless. After all, any headache or fever in this era may cost his life. Thinking about the really unreliable doctors at present, Alexander really dared not take it lightly.

"This is not unpalatable with honey." Alexander said as he sniffed himself. Seeing Sophia hesitated for a moment, he sighed helplessly and drank the potion that had just been cooked and was a little hot.

Then he lowered his head and kissed Sophia's somewhat dry lips due to fever.

The spicy hot ginger soup flowed into Sophia's lips. In order to prevent her from struggling, Alexander hugged her waist with his left hand and tightly held the back of her head with his right hand, while his lips tightly blocked Sophia's lips to prevent her from spitting out the ginger soup.

Sophia kept kicking and struggling in Alexander's arms like a cat, and pushed him hard with both hands. Her unusually large strength forced Alexander to hug her tighter.

Sophia made a muffled "hum" sound in her throat. The sound sounded strange, which made Alexander, who had just wanted to not let her spit out ginger soup, feel a little inexplicably hot.

Slowly, Alexander felt that Sophia's hands that had originally slapped him became tightly holding his shoulders. At the same time, her head no longer struggled to swing, but raised slightly upwards and allowed Alexander to kiss her lips constantly.

Because he was burning a lot of wood extravagantly, the room was not cold. Alexander felt his throat dry and his head was a little wet. He raised his head and left and looked down. Seeing Sophia's red face nestled in his arms, the big eyes were looking at him without blinking. Alexander's heart heated up again. He lowered his head and prepared to kiss Sophia's lips again.

The servant of the Order Conference followed a maid outside Alexander's room and knocked on his door.

Alexander walked to the door and opened a very narrow gap. When he saw the servant, he immediately recognized that this man was a close friend of Caesar.

Caesar was very smart. After occupying the chief of the Order Conference and taking many seats by Bogia and the nobles who supported them, Caesar was wise to not arrange his own people in the important positions of the Order Conference. He generously left those seats to other nobles, which gave him a very good reputation, and some even thought that he was much more generous than his father.

But in fact, Alexander knew that Caesar had placed a large number of his confidant servants and servants in the Order Conference and obeyed the order, and he secretly controlled a large part of the power at the bottom of the Order Conference.

Although he was unwilling, after receiving the order from Caesar to summon him, he carried Sophia to the bed and covered her tightly. After telling her that she must take medicine on time, otherwise she would "punish" her like she did just now, Alexander kissed Sophia's wet forehead, which had already begun to sweat, and then followed the servant to leave Marino Palace.

The streets were filled with white scenery. This was originally supposed to be pleasing to the eye, but now it became uneasy. Especially when seeing the frozen Tiber River, which was like a mirror on the gray sun, Alexander knew that things might be much more serious than he thought.

Sure enough, when he saw Alexander, Caesar's face showed a look of relief for a moment.

"We need something to spend the winter," Caesar said in his first sentence, and even a little angry. "Maybe we shouldn't have let you sell all the food to the French, but now it's our turn to face difficulties."

"The city of Rome is short of food?" Alexander looked at Caesar in amazement. He felt that this was a bit incredible. Although there was no large production area near Rome as Agri, with the rich Lombardy region and the convenient maritime transportation of the Trenean Sea, there was no dilemma of food being cut off.

The most important thing is that this is Rome!

Unlike the French who plundered all the grain stored in the Naples granary before leaving, Rome, as the holy land of the Christ world, even Charles, the King of Dharma, did not destroy Rome at all, so how could it be short of food?

"It's not just food, but also a lot of things. The whole of Rome was in trouble because of this heavy snow."

Caesar walked back and forth with some anxiety. Although he had always had extraordinary ambitions, and had received a priesthood since he was a young age, and had become a cardinal at a young age, and even soon became a cardinal, everything so far was arranged by Alexander VI for him.

This is the first time that he has really made orders entirely by himself.

"Alexander, we lack food, vegetables, olive oil that can be illuminated, and even firewood for winter. No one expected this snow to fall for so long. It was a disaster." Caesar said anxiously, "There are already houses that were crushed by snow. Some people died. Many roads outside Rome have been blocked by heavy snow. If all this is not resolved as soon as possible, riots may occur."

Looking at Caesar's gloomy expression, Alexander understood in his heart that he knew that what Caesar was really worried about was not the losses caused to Rome by the snow disaster, but the riots.

Although the Order Conference took advantage of the execution of the City Hall to seize control of most of the Roman city, the French were obviously unwilling to give up their rule over Rome easily, so even a little mistake might become an excuse for the French to make a comeback to take back control of the city.

It was impossible for Caesar to give up his power. Unlike the excuses he had been willing to create various riots before, what he was most concerned about now was how to ensure that the city was safe and sound.

Now, heavy snow has been continuously for several days and has become the first problem he faced after "ruling" Rome. If he cannot get rid of the predicament in front of him as soon as possible, let alone the French may find excuses to take back the powers promised before, there may be someone within the Order Conference questioning his authority.

Caesar could not allow such a thing to happen, even if it was just a little call.

"We need to send people out of the city to collect the things that are much needed. God, there are so many other things that are needed in a winter besides food. I never knew there was so much to do before," Caesar looked at Alexander, and saw that he was listening carefully to himself. He felt satisfied and touched the thicker beard on his chin that had just appeared thicker. "Food, firewood, lamp oil, enough cotton and some cloth that could be used for tents, which were to help those homeless people who had been crushed by snow."

Once Caesar started working, he seemed to become the one who always had great confidence in himself. He began to issue orders constantly, and at the same time he modified some of the previous orders that had obviously been invalid due to heavy snow for several consecutive days.

Surprisingly, Caesar had a good memory. He didn't even need to look through the bottom of the orders that had been long ago. As long as the various documents he signed, he seemed to be able to remember them.

He also showed an unusually prosperous experience. From day to evening, the actual ruler of Rome was working non-stop. During this period, he had almost no good rest except for eating cold mutton and drinking some sweet soup.

Looking at Caesar who was working constantly, Alexander had to secretly admire him. He knew that many people were hostile to Caesar's ambitions, and he was even more dissatisfied with Alexander VI for his son's position in the church. However, Caesar was obviously not the kind of playboy who only relied on returning to Taiwan to act like a mighty man. In fact, for the first time, Caesar was really calmed down. He also showed extraordinary wisdom and skills.

He ordered that all members of the Order Council be responsible for the areas under their jurisdiction, and even ordered the decision to temporarily announce the establishment of the ancient Roman positions such as the vassal officer, and at the same time declared that all members of the Order Council serve as vassal officers, responsible for the task of rescuing and maintaining order to the residents of their respective vassal officers.

When Caesar said casually, "Maybe he could establish a guarantor," and the order to establish this position took effect immediately, it took only a few minutes, which made Alexander realize that the seemingly helpless appearance he had shown before was completely disguised.

It was obvious that Caesar had already considered what to do, and perhaps he had even thought about how to use this snow disaster to take the opportunity to seize the dominance of Rome more firmly.

"Alexander, we have a problem," Caesar, who was looking at a document he had just sent, said to Alexander. "Now we don't have enough firewood, but the worse thing is that the road out of the city has been blocked by heavy snow, and we just received a report," he leaned over and lowered his voice, "two bridges leading to Sanroni Peak have been crushed by the snow last night," said Caesar, whisperingly explained, "There is a coal mine on the Sanroni Peak, the kind of black stone that can burn."

Alexander nodded. He knew that few people in many continents of Europe now know what coal is like, and there are very few people who know about coal mines.

However, some remote places in England and Northern Europe seem to have used coal earlier than the Europeans in the south.

As for the coal mines on Mount Sanroni, Alexander has heard of them.

As the earliest place to use coal in Europe, Italy has enough coking coal mines. Even the famous Milan armor is closely related to the use of burning coal instead of firewood, increasing the temperature of forging fires and increasing the strength of the armor.

Sanroni Peak is a famous coal-producing area in central Italy.

"We have to send people to open this road," Caesar looked at Alexander, his voice lowered. "We must contact the coalition forces, and I am worried that the French might do what the snow."

Alexander has always understood what Caesar means.

It sounds amazing. There are fewer coalition forces surrounding the city of Rome than the French, and the so-called siege is more of a symbol. Sometimes the armies of both sides even face off outside the city for a short time, and many vendors even started trading in the open space where the two armies confronted each other.

This strange phenomenon continued until the French main force was surrounded outside Piedmont. The French began to become a little panicked, and there was also movement on the coalition. It is said that someone saw cannons appear outside the city.

But now heavy snow has blocked all roads, and this time is definitely not a good time for the coalition forces outside the city to attack the city. The situation is gradually becoming more beneficial to the French.

"If the French were to loot the city of Rome at this time, it would be a good opportunity," Caesar's eyes flashed with melancholy. "Our Order Conference has just been established, and there are not many Roman nobles who have truly been armed, and my guards want to protect the Vatican."

Alexander knew that what Caesar said was indeed true. It was already difficult for his army to protect the Vatican, and it was impossible for him to care about the city of Rome on the other side of the Tiber River.

"Then do you want me to open this road?"

Alexander knew that since he had already said this, Caesar didn't need to make it clear by himself.

"I need your help," Caesar stared at Alexander. "If I could, I would rather do this task myself, but now I can't live without Rome."

Alexander nodded. He knew what Caesar said. It was obvious that opening up this path was not only crucial to Rome, but those who completed this task would become heroes in the minds of the Romans besieged by snow disasters.

Just think about it carefully and you will find that among the members of the entire Order Conference, Alexander is the only one who is suitable for accepting this work.

Because no matter who accomplishes this task changes in reputation and status, it may break the delicate balance maintained by the Order Conference today. As for Giovanni or Jeffrey to do this, not to mention that the members of the Order Conference will be concerned about the over-the-top authority of the Bogia family, even Caesar may not be willing to see his two brothers make such contributions.

Alexander had no such concerns at all, because he was not a Roman, but a Naples, or Sicilian.

"Well, I'll go back and set out tomorrow," Alexander nodded his head and agreed, "but I need the Romans to bear the cost of this expedition for me, and I hope that after I come back, I can get the bonus paid in the name of the Order Conference. You must know that the bravery of the Bohemians is proportional to their commission."

Alexander's request made Caesar smile slightly, and he was very satisfied with Alexander's attitude of treating this purely as a business.

Although Caesar didn't know the saying "The problems that can be solved with money are not problems", he would like to see such a simple and pragmatic relationship with Alexander.

As for whether this young man who just walked out would become the second in Sforza, Caesar has not yet considered this issue.
