Chapter 49: Going South

The South China Sea is still a bit hot in early autumn. Fortunately, the breeze is gentle, so comfortable that it makes people stand on the deck and don’t want to leave. Xiong Jing on the stern is not concerned about the comfort of the autumn wind, and his eyes are staring at a few small things.

The first one looks like a candlestick, but this candlestick has an arm that extends horizontally and has an angle of 90 degrees. There is a fan inlaid between the arm and the candlestick column. The edge of the fan is full of scales. A thin light wooden board that cannot be thin is hardly hung between the angle between the column and the arm. Because of the breeze, the wooden board is not vertical, but has a certain angle with the column. The wooden poles that hardly connect the wooden board indicate the scale on the edge of the fan.

This is a Hooker anemometer. It is simple, direct, and uses the principle of gravity to measure wind speed. Next to it is a wind cup anemometer commonly found in later generations. The three wind cups are at an angle of 120 degrees on the horizontal plane. Once the wind blows, the wind cup will rotate on the horizontal plane. Just like a car, the bearing at the connection between the wind cup will also rotate. This rotation will drive the gear at the lower end, and the gears are connected to the pointer. The rotation will have different readings at different speeds.

In addition, the entire anemometer can also show the wind direction. The arrow-type weather vane is pressed across the upper end of the anemometer. The tail of the weather vane is like the thin plate of the Hook anemometer, which can only be stable when facing the wind direction sideways. Once the thin plate is still in the wind, the arrow at the other end indicates the wind direction. Of course, the direction may also be the opposite, 180 degrees and zero degrees are both sideways facing the wind direction.

There is a third anemometer next to the air cup anemometer that looks exactly the same, but this anemometer does not rely on gear speed measurement. Because the involute line cannot be calculated, the gear will naturally wear after working for a long time, and the transmission efficiency will change, and the proportion between the speed and the reading will also change, resulting in inaccurate reading.

Therefore, the anemometer discards gear transmission, and the principle is equivalent to a hand-crank generator. The bearing at the wind cup drives the coil to rotate in the magnetic field of a natural magnet, and the magnetic flux changes generate an induced electromotive force. The electromotive force is output with a DC voltage, and the current strength is used to pull the ammeter magnetic needle. But this is not an ammeter after all, the ammeter coil is stationary. The coil of the anemometer rotates at a high speed. The paint on the rotating gold wire will break. In the end, twine wire must be wrapped on the painted gold wire to protect the insulation paint.

"How fast is the wind?" As Xiong Jing looked at him, Captain Hong Mou of Shaosiming shouted.

"Report to the Chief: A device three: three, B device four: five, C device two." The three anemometers have not been calibrated and the wind speed is completely different.

"The direction of the wind?" Hong Mou asked again.

"The wind direction is 165 degrees." It was still the south wind, and the entire fleet, including the newly launched flying scissor ship, Suzaku, all fell down its main sail. Now the slow coastal current is pushed south to the sea boat, with a speed of about two knots.

"The wind direction has not reversed yet." Xiong Jing's gaze turned back from the anemometer and smiled at Hongmu.

"Report to the king," said Zuo Wuzhu, the king of Minyue, standing next to Xiong Jing. "As a common example, the wind direction should reverse within a few days."

Xiongjing is generally clear when the monsoon on the coast of East Asia turns. The south wind turns north wind usually turns north in the coast of Fujian. The north wind usually turns south in the third month of the Gregorian calendar. The north wind usually weakens after three months of the Gregorian calendar (there will be occasional south wind weather). The truly stable south wind will be from May to July of the Gregorian calendar. Just like the north wind gradually advances south, the south wind is also pushed north one by one. The south wind reaches the northernmost North China in July and August.

The monsoon situation in later generations is similar to that of this era, and the only difference is in the calendar. Xiong Jing is not worried about when the north wind will turn. The reason why the fleet moved south early was to buy more time for the Red Ocean Fleet.

The so-called Red Ocean Fleet is the fleet that advances westward. It is said that the fleet is really a swollen face and fat man. There are only two ships in the entire fleet, one is the new ship of the Shaosiming class, and the Taotie (tao.tie) class. Needless to say, the Taotie is a horizontal sail cargo ship, which is 35 meters long, 29 meters in keel bones, 9.8 meters wide, with about 520 tons of drainage and 400 tons of cargo.

The route from East Asia to America is certain, and the time is also certain, but the route to India and West Asia is very uncertain. Xiong Jing only knows about the general monsoon situation and the rough route, and he is not familiar with the storm in the Bay of Bengal. Therefore, in order to gain more time, the Red Ocean Fleet set off along the coastal current from Zhufang before the monsoon turns and heads to Panyu, the southernmost end. After the last batch of freshwater vegetables is supplemented in Panyu, the fleet will travel directly to the Southeast Ocean under the monsoon.

Because I don’t know the exact latitude of Singapore, this time there is danger. The fleet is likely to lose its direction among countless islands in the South China Ocean, or be lost in the Indian Ocean, and cannot find land in the Indian Ocean. Although the first-year students of the aviation school have been tempered during their maritime voyages from last year to this year and are becoming increasingly accustomed to the maritime voyages of land, Xiong Jing is still worried that they will have an accident.

Sextant, barometer, magnetic compass, the most accurate map (there are inevitably many errors to draw maps according to memories, and these errors cannot be ignored), anemometer... In short, any nautical instruments that can be made are equipped to the Red Ocean Fleet. Shangui and Taotie are also filled with supplies for the Geshi, and even the freshwater is filled with tin cans to prevent the freshwater tank from seeping into the seawater or the water quality from corroding.

In addition to these preparations, the king of Luoyue, Zuofushan, and the envoy of the Anyang king of Ouluo, were waiting in Panyu. They all brought a few Yue people who often sailed. If they got lost, they might be able to point out the waterway. No matter how bad they were, they could communicate with the natives on the Nanyang islands. If their luck was better, they might meet the Malay sailors paddling canoes and slashing waves.

"Please go back to the cabin and take a break." Xiong Jing did not answer Zuo Wuzhu's words, but just nodded. Chang Jiang thought he was tired, so he asked him to go back to the cabin.

"No need." The sun was scorching above my head, and the tailmassail was blown up by the south wind in the bow direction. The sail edge trembled from time to time and made a thump. "If I had known this, I would have taken the Suzaku to Panyu first."

It was too slow to sail against the wind. Although the Suzaku could really sail against the wind, it could only retract sails for the sake of the entire fleet. Xiong Jing said this, and the people around him couldn't help laughing. Zuo Wuzhu said as a landlord: "If the king wants to change the boat, it can be. There is an island a hundred miles south, which can be changed to the Suzaku."

The capital of Minyue was established and Yue moved to the mountains (now Changle), and the south of Ouyue to Yue moved to the mountains, and the south of Yue moved to the mountains were the rule of Minyue. However, unlike Zuo Wuzhu's previous boast, his father Zuo Mu was not dead. He was just a political act on behalf of the Fujian and Yue, and was not the real king of Minyue. When Xiong Jing arrived in Yue to the mountains, Zuo Mu came to meet him.
