9. About the fall and recovery of Tengchong, an important town in western Yunnan

Tengchong County is located in the western border of Yunnan, on the western foot of Gaoligong Mountain. It is the throat of the ancient "Southwest Silk Road", an important town for the southwest national defense of the motherland, and a famous overseas Chinese hometown and historical and cultural city. It is not only one of the earliest international trading ports, but also a major military city in history and dynasties. It is known as the "Sanxuan Portal, Eight Pass Key" and the "First City in the Extreme Border".

On May 10, 1942, at around 2:00 a.m., a Japanese infantry squadron, with about 200 people, carried four machine guns and three grenade launchers, and headed along the Tenglong Highway (the highway from Tengchong to Longling) toward the famous city of Tengchong in western Yunnan.

Tengchong was the location of the Tenglong Border Region Administrative Office at that time. The troops were garrisoned by the "Xifeng Brigade" and more than 1,500 customs police. There were also several local regiments. I heard that a Japanese army was invading, and Long Shengwu, a border administrative officer, who was known as the "King of Western Yunnan", fled in panic, carrying dozens of opium, silver and money (mule, horse, and wife), and more than ten wives of all sizes. Officials at all levels followed the news, and the defenders in the city were in chaos without fighting.

In this way, the Japanese devils walked into Tengchong City without any effort to shoot and shoot, laughing and laughing. At that time, the stockpiling of Tengchong City was quite abundant, and the Japanese devils were extremely happy, saying that this was the military ration left by the Chinese government to them by the Great Japanese Empire.

Two years later, on May 10, 1944, the Chinese Expeditionary Force launched a counterattack. The 20th Army forced its way across the Nujiang River and launched a heroic and tenacious attack war against the enemies entrenched in various strongholds in Gaoligong Mountain. After clearing the enemies outside Tengcheng, it launched a fierce attack on Tengcheng on July 28 of the same year. The battle was very fierce. During the 49-day siege, airplanes were blown up, ground artillery fire, corpses were crisscrossed on the streets and alleys, and blood was filled with the city walls. By the time Tengchong City was restored on September 14, the whole city had become a piece of rubble, and the 496-year-old ancient city was built, and it eventually turned into a scorched earth.
