Chapter 32 Talismans (Part 2)

"Brother Man, how could there be cinnabar in your house?"

When Fang Yi heard Man Jun's words, he was stunned for a moment, because in Fang Yi's opinion, the master could not get much of the things, and it must be relatively rare objects, and ordinary people could rarely use them. He didn't expect that Man Jun's house would have them.

Cinnabar is also called cinnabar or cinnabar. In traditional Chinese medicine, internal administration has the effect of sedation, hypnosis, detoxification and anti-corrosion. External use can inhibit or kill skin bacteria and parasites. It can be regarded as a drug and is very common in ancient prescriptions.

However, cinnabar is also called mercury sulfide. It contains mercury components. After being taken orally, it will mainly be distributed in the liver and kidney parts, causing liver and kidney damage. It can penetrate the blood-brain barrier and directly damage the central nervous system. Therefore, the application of cinnabar in modern medicine has become very rare.

What is mentioned above is the role of cinnabar in medicine, and in Taoism, cinnabar is undoubtedly more famous.

Cinnabar, known as "dan" in ancient times, was a elixir that emerged after the Eastern Han Dynasty to seek immortality, which led the Chinese people to gradually start using chemical methods to produce cinnabar, which is commonly known as elixir. In the past, Zhu Houfeng, the famous Jiajing emperor of the Ming Dynasty, died on this cinnabar elixir.

In addition, cinnabar has another characteristic, which is that its color can last for a long time, so it was also used as a pigment in ancient times. Cinnabar "coating cinnabar" refers to grinding cinnabar into red powder and embedding in the marks of oracle bone inscriptions to show its striking.

Later emperors followed this method and used the red powder of cinnabar to write a review article in red ink, which was the origin of the word "Zhu Ci". However, in modern times, due to the replacement of various chemicals, cinnabar has gradually disappeared from people's sight.

"Hehe, don't you see what your brother Man is doing?"

When Man Jun was in the hospital, he saw Professor Sun Lianda and Fang Yi very concerned about him, so he wanted to take a test. He smiled and said, "I am in the antique business, Fang Yi, do you know what the relationship between antique calligraphy and painting and cinnabar?"

"The relationship between cinnabar and antique calligraphy and painting?" Fang Yi frowned when he heard this, but after a moment he stretched out and said, "Brother Man, what you said should be the word "painting"?"

"Hmm? Xiao Fang, it's not simple..."

When Fang Yi heard Fang Yi talk about the relationship between cinnabar and calligraphy and painting, Man Jun couldn't help but raise his thumbs up. Not to mention outsiders, even many people in antiques may not know the relationship between the two words "Danqing" and cinnabar.

"Brother Man, what are you two talking about?" The fat man and Sanpao next to him were confused. In their opinion, Fang Yi was as if he was guessing a puzzle with Man Jun, and he couldn't hear what it meant.

"I'll explain it to you..."

Seeing the fat man and Sanpao looked inexplicable, Man Jun felt a sense of accomplishment as a teacher, and immediately said, "Danqing in ancient times meant paintings. The elixir refers to cinnabar, and Qing is a kind of green ore. Together, it is called Danqing..."

Because of the rosy and bright color of cinnabar, it is also loved by painters. Ancient calligraphy and painting were called "Danqing". The "dan" refers to cinnabar, an indispensable "eight treasure ink paste" in calligraphy and painting pigments, and its main component is also cinnabar.

Man Jun originally didn't know the meaning of these two words, but he was a relatively easy-to-learn person. After entering the antiques business, he tried every means to improve his relevant knowledge. For this reason, he had already applied to the audience at Jinling Academy of Fine Arts. The meaning of the word "Picture" was also heard from the classroom.

"Fang Yi, do you think this piece of cinnabar is OK?"

After Man Jun finished explaining, he used the key to open the door of the room on the first floor, and took out a wooden box from it. After taking it out, he exposed a cinnabar Pixiu, the size of a baby's fist, that was red all over the body.

"Well? Why are there anyone using cinnabar carving this thing?" Seeing this Pixiu playing with it, Fang Yi looked at Man Jun with his eyes and said, "Brother Man, this cinnabar is of good quality and carved into something. It's a pity to grind it, right?"

"Xiao Fang, do you really treat cinnabar as a treasure?"

After hearing Fang Yi's words, Man Jun couldn't help laughing and said, "Don't you guys want to do cultural relics business? Let me tell you, this cinnabar ornament is also a kind of cultural relics, and the price is not very high. I collected this Pixiu before, and the materials are not as expensive as its wages..."

As mentioned earlier, antiques and cultural relics themselves have many overlaps, such as the miscellaneous things in antiques, which can be played with in most of them. Man Jun is an antique merchant, and there are naturally objects in the category of cultural relics at home.

"Really?" Fang Yi asked a little disbelief. He always thought that cinnabar was a relatively rare thing.

"Of course it's true. If this thing is expensive, can I use it for you to grind it into powder?"

Man Jun waved his hand indifferently and said, "When we pack up our house, I will take you to Chaotian Palace for a while and you will understand that there are so many selling this thing on the street stalls, but some are natural cinnabar and some are synthetic. Don't buy it randomly..."

Cinnabar mined is a crystalline ore. It is produced in several provinces in Hunan, Guizhou and Sichuan. However, the volume of natural crystal cinnabar is not very large, so merchants often press and synthesize cinnabar powder and make jewelry for sale, but its price is far from natural.

The piece Man Jun took out is also a synthetic cinnabar. If it is really a natural crystal, then such a small Pixiu will at least be more than 10,000 yuan. Even if Boss Man is bold, he will never be willing to give up.

"Xiao Fang, don't worry, use it boldly, I'll buy it if it's not enough..." Man Jun gave Fang Yi a reassurance. He didn't say how much he wanted, but he would go around the market and buy ten or eight out of ten.

"Okay, then grind it into powder first..." After hearing Man Jun's words, Fang Yi knew that this thing should be more common now, perhaps because his master stayed on the mountain for many years.

It is easy to grind cinnabar powder. A few people walked into the yard. Man Jun found a small hammer and knocked the Pixiu piece into pieces in a few seconds. In less than ten minutes, the cinnabar turned into a pile of powder.

As for the brush and talisman paper, Fang Yi cut the size with a paper cutter, the preparation work was basically completed.

"Fang Yi, use this inkstone to adjust cinnabar..."

Man Jun took out another inkstone from somewhere. He dared not say that there must be other things in his house, but there is no shortage of four treasures in the study. In the past few years, when the output of rice paper was high and the price was sluggish, Man Jun even stored a lot of rice paper. In recent years, the price of rice paper has risen. He sold rice paper to students of the Academy of Fine Arts and made a small profit.

"No, Brother Man, just find a broken bowl..."

Looking at the inkstone that Man Jun brought over, Fang Yi shook his head. Although cinnabar is also called cinnabar, it is difficult to clean. If this inkstone is used, it would be a pity that black ink will not be used in the future.

"That's right, you wait..." Man Jun nodded, ran to the yard for a while, and really brought in a broken bowl and said, "This is the bowl I used to feed dogs. I washed it. Can you see if it can be used?"

"Yes, I'll adjust it..."

Fang Yi nodded, put all the cinnabar in, then added some water, and stirred it with the chopsticks handed over by Man Jun. It was not until the cinnabar was about the same viscosity as the ink that Fang Yi stopped. The cinnabar used to draw talismans was already done.

"What, Fang Yi, is this the beginning?"

Man Jun looked excitedly at Fang Yi's adjustment of cinnabar, and a hint of nervous expression appeared on his face. Drawing talismans is a very mysterious thing for ordinary people. Man Jun naturally wanted to see it. As for whether this talisman is useful or not, Man Jun didn't think about it at all.

"Brother Man, I have to keep quiet later. I haven't made talismans for some time. If it is interrupted, I will start over..." Fang Yi nodded, but did not start writing, but put the brush back, sat upright at the table and took a deep breath.

Talismans are very common in Taoism and have a wide range of functions. They are used to treat people, to exorcise ghosts and to cure evil spirits, and to relieve disasters and stop harm. In the past, during the festivals in rural areas, in addition to posting New Year pictures, they often posted a talisman at home.

As for Taoist priests who do rituals, they cannot do without talismans. They may write talismans on seals and report to the gods, or use talismans to summon generals to ask for gods, ask them to kill ghosts, or use talismans to care for the underworld and refine the souls of the dead. They may post and hang various talismans inside and outside the entire mandala.

However, science has been booming these days, and there are very few places where talismans can be seen in the city. Not only that, even Taoist priests who can make talismans in Taoist temples are rare. Most of them sell dog meat with the title of sheep, and there are many talismans sold to the outside world, and they are even just some printed materials.

The talismans made by Fang Yi are very different from ordinary talismans. The talismans he made are called Taoist talismans in the Taoist sect. They are truly magical talismans and can truly suppress evil spirits.

Although some Taoist priests in Taoist temples can still draw talismans, those talismans are also different from those made by Fang Yi, because the methods are different. Fang Yi needs to instill in the Taoist true energy he has cultivated. Only in this way can talismans have magical uses that ordinary people cannot understand.

As the Taoist script says, "The talisman has no positive shape, but it is spiritual with energy." Fang Yi first needs to run the exercises to seal the spiritual energy into the talisman.

Foreign scientists once studied domestic qigong. After a long period of research, they came to a conclusion that qigong will produce a human body magnetic field. Qigong treats diseases by using this magnetic field to treat patients, thereby producing therapeutic effects.

In modern terms, Fang Yi's approach is to use the magnetic field generated by people who cultivate true qi to magnetize ink and cinnabar with the magnetic field generated by themselves, forming a tiny magnetic field on the talisman to induce the karma changes of the elixir of heaven and earth, so that the talisman can play a real role.
