Chapter 81 Chernenko's Farewell

"Seryosha, it's done!" Yakovlev made a special trip to say this on the phone in a happy voice. Although there will be corresponding reports on TV soon, Yakovlev still wants to personally inform Gorbachev's close ministers of this good news.

After putting down the phone, Seriosha felt excited. Although he had known that the final winner was Gorbachev, Seriosha had experienced the struggle over the past year and knew that all this was hard-won.

The first thing Gorbachev did after taking office was the funeral of General Secretary Chernenko, the third supreme leader who died within three years of the Soviet Union. The frequent replacement of senior leaders caused the political situation of the Soviet Union to fall into a state of instability, and the great cause of reform stagnated.

Not only was the economic reform delayed, but the anti-corruption campaign advocated by Andropov was also completely rejected. Seriosha knew very well what kind of person Gorbachev was. In the first two years of his rule, Seriosha would not expand his financial business to the country in any case.

With the release of the list of General Secretary Chernenko's funeral committees, the people soon knew who the new head was. Gromiko did not withdraw from the stage of Moscow politics. He was elected as the chairman of the Supreme Soviet Presidium. This position was nominally the head of state of the Soviet Union, but actually only had symbolic significance.

Seriosha was honored to be arranged to be a member of General Secretary Chernenko's funeral committee. This is not an honor that anyone can get, because Seriosha's immediate boss Zhuravlev did not receive this honor. Seriosha knew in his heart that this was Gorbachev's reward for him.

Selyosha devoted himself to the work of the funeral committee. This time he was still responsible for external liaison and inviting foreign politicians to attend the funeral of Chernenko. The specific things were taken by Nasja, and Selyosha only needed to lead the overall situation.

The funeral of Chernenko was the same as before. Two days before the funeral, Chernenko's coffin was parked at the Moscow Workers' Cultural Center for mourning. The outside of the cultural center was filled with garlands sent by the masses, but there were very few ordinary people who could really go inside the mourning hall to admire Chernenko's appearance.

The first one to arrive was naturally the members of the Politburo headed by Gorbachev. They wore red cuffs with black borders on their right arm, which was a symbol of the members of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. As a ministerial official, Seriosha came with colleagues from the Ministry of Foreign Economic and Trade. Because Seriosha was arranged by Gorbachev to join the funeral committee, several colleagues of the Ministry of Foreign Economic and Trade were a little alienated from Seriosha, but Seriosha no longer felt that these things were indifferent, because Gorbachev would soon make major adjustments to personnel. At that time, the Ministry of Foreign Economic and Trade would be completely subdued by Seriosha.

The ceremony lasted for two days. During these two days, meeting envoys and representatives from various countries who came to attend the funeral became Gorbachev's most important task. The reception of these big names was Seryosha's main official duties in the past few days.

The delegation from the UK was very familiar with Seriosha, but Seriosha didn't know them very well. However, this did not prevent Seriosha from establishing a new friendship with them. Seriosha made an appointment with the officials in charge of trade in the British delegation. Seriosha invited the other party to wait until the funeral was over to go to the Ural Heavy Machinery Factory to inspect the landing of the turbine, and the other party agreed happily.

At the funeral ceremony of General Secretary Chernenko, Selyosau had the honor to stand at the spectacular scene of Lenin's tomb overlooking the entire Red Square. The mass phalanx in the distance was full of portraits and commemorative slogans of Chernenko.

Gorbachev delivered eulogies to the 200,000 people who came to attend the funeral ceremony directly above Lenin’s tomb, commemorating and summarizing General Secretary Chernenko’s lifelong achievements.

Then everyone walked down to Lenin's tomb and came to the back of a cannon car carrying the coffin of General Secretary Chernenko, and followed the slowly moving gun cart around the field for three times. The coffin was then placed in the New Saint Cemetery.

The members of the Politburo Standing Committee led by Gorbachev were the ones who helped Chernekol with Gorbachev. Gromiko and Gorbachev stood on the left and right sides of the first row, while General Secretary Chernekol's relatives followed closely behind.

The burial ceremony inside the New Saint Cemetery can only be seen on TV. Although Selyosha can walk into the cemetery, he can only stand outside the crowd and take a few glances.

The silence in the cemetery was broken by the sound of gunfire from the guards. After a round of gunfire, Chernenko's relatives came forward to say his final farewell. Then the coffin was closed and slowly placed in the tomb dug in advance, covered with floating soil, and the leader of the Red Empire returned to peace.

After Chernenko was buried, Gorbachev led everyone back to the top of Lenin's tomb, because a grand military parade was about to be held. With Gorbachev's order, the three-army guard of honor passed through the Red Square in neat steps. When the guard of honor passed under Lenin's tomb, they would shout loudly: "Ula!"

Gorbachev took off his hat and held it in his hand, waved his greetings to the soldiers of the Red Army, and looked at the military formations passing on the Red Square and various types of weapons from the Soviet Union. Representatives from European countries gradually developed different thoughts. The Soviet Union's strong military strength was the sword of Damocles hanging over the heads of European countries. Both Eastern and Western Europe were afraid of the Soviet Union's military power.

However, now is not the time to consider the mood of the representatives of these countries. The sudden death of Chernenko, who had just been in office for a year, brought a huge blow to the people of the Soviet Union. A military parade can greatly enhance the confidence and pride of the people of the Soviet Union for the country.

Jeltsin quietly walked to Selyosha, looked at the parade below, and said with emotion: "How great would it be if our country could have fewer weapons and invested funds in the cause that concerns the national economy and people's livelihood!"

"When you arrive in Moscow, you can go to Secretary Gorbachev to discuss these matters in person. By the way, how is our new workers' city project handed over now? When are you planning to take office?" Xie Liangsha responded casually.

"Yakovlev told me that I will be in Moscow next month. At that time, I cannot do without your strong help, Brother Seryosha!" Jeltsin said excitedly.
