Chapter 126 Air-cooled liquid-cooled

Air cooling and liquid cooling are the differences in the cooling forms of engines. As the name suggests, air cooling uses air cooling, while liquid cooling uses coolant, which is generally water now.

The initial engines were all air-cooled, and this kind of engine has some advantages.

For example, the weight is lighter than the liquid-cooled one, with less water sleeves and less heat dissipation water tank. As long as the heat sink is arranged outside the cylinder, it will reduce the weight a lot more than the liquid-cooled one.

At the same time, because the liquid cooling system is saved, the entire engine is missing a lot of trouble, and the overall reliability is improved.

At the same time, in the air battle, the opponent killed the cooling water tank with one shot, and the liquid-cooled engine was scrapped, and the cylinder of the air-cooled engine was scattered on a circumferential plane, which reduced the possibility of being taken into the pot.

However, the mainstream now is liquid cooling, because air cooling has some congenital defects.

The first biggest defect is the cross-sectional area.

The aircraft is about to fly. The larger the windward area, the greater the air resistance. The liquid-cooled engine has a small cross-sectional area, while the air-cooled engine needs to be arranged in one plane, with a large cross-sectional area, which eventually leads to an increase in the air resistance of the entire aircraft.

At the same time, the arrangement of air-cooled aircraft engines will cause more obvious and violent vibrations than liquid-cooled aircraft engines, and such vibrations will undoubtedly affect the aircraft.

Moreover, since air-cooled engines use heat sinks or directly expose components to the air for cooling, heat sinks, etc. cannot be added without limitation. In this way, in terms of heat dissipation, air-cooling is worse.

In the history of aircraft research and development, air-cooled engines often have headaches for heat dissipation. If the engine is not done well, the engine will catch fire, and liquid-cooled ones will not have this concern.

In fact, there is no conclusion on whether liquid cooling is better or air cooling is better. During World War II, many ace fighter jets were born, including air cooling and liquid cooling.

For example, the "Rong" 21 star air-cooled piston engine of Zero War and the R1830 star air-cooled piston engine of Cat are the peaks of air-cooled piston.

The "Merlin" 12V liquid-cooled piston engine of Fire I, the DB601 liquid-cooled piston engine of BF109, the Allison V1710-33 liquid-cooled piston engine of 40, and the Mikulin AM-35 liquid-cooled piston engine of IL-2 are all excellent liquid-cooled engines.

Whether it is air-cooled or liquid-cooled, as long as you can win, it is a good plane!

From the actual situation in Germany today, although DB601 is already very excellent, its output is limited. Now Goering is posing, and it is obvious that even if there is a quarrel, he will definitely not give it.

At the same time, from Cialick's point of view, the Navy uses air-cooled engines, which is more suitable. For example, look at the United States on the other side of the ocean. You will know that the US Army Air Force uses liquid-cooled engines, while the Navy uses air-cooled engines.

Why? It’s troublesome to maintain and poor anti-strike ability!

Liquid-cooled engines have coolant. If the weather is cold, when starting the engine, you need to add boiling water in advance to preheat the engine. Once water leaks, it is even more troublesome. Therefore, in cold areas, liquid-cooled engines are difficult to serve.

When Germany invaded the Soviet Union, the BF109's dispatch efficiency was less than one-quarter of that of the FW190, which is why.

And the air conditioner is not so troublesome, and it can be ignited directly at any time! On the aircraft carrier, away from the mainland, there is not much freshwater on the warships, and if you have to prepare the plane, it would be even more of a nightmare.

Moreover, air-cooled has strong resistance to strikes. In combat, once a cylinder is hit, it may fly back. If liquid-cooled, you have to parachute.

On land, skydiving and ground followed by jumping into the sea, which was similar to suicide.

Although the air-cooling area is large, it can be reduced by making up for it with superb design. In this regard, Cialek trusts Folk-Wolf Company very much.

Because this is what happened in history, and the final FW190 is more advanced than the performance of BF109!

Historically, Germany looked at the world and found that there was only one BF109 conquering the world, which was quite dangerous.

Because at least two modern fighter jets in other air force powers are about to be put into service, Germany has proposed technical specifications for new fighter jets in 37 years in history.

By the spring of 1938, these technical specifications were sent to major manufacturers, hoping to create advanced fighter jets among them.

According to the plan, Folk Company designed a fighter jet driven by a star-shaped air-cooled engine and compact structure.

However, at that time, German senior executives were all advocates of inline water-cooled engines and did not recognize Folk's new fighter plan, so this plan did not attract Goering's eyes at all.

But then, the development of the Henkel He100 and He112, which were highly anticipated by Goering, failed. At the same time, although Junckers in Dessau and Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart were able to provide the sufficient number of liquid-cooled engines required for aircraft production in the short term.

This led to Henkel's company having to reduce a lot and eventually stopped the production of He111P bombers with DB601 engines, and instead focused on the production of He111H powered by Junckers' Jumo211 engine.

As a result, just like the bright and brightest things in BF109, FW190 finally re-entered the Luftwaffe's eyes.

Folk Company is also quite successful. This aircraft was finally developed and is even better than the BF109!

As for the problem of large windward area, the designer has cleverly solved it. The engine cooling air intake is designed in the engine hood and covered with a special ductile propeller hub fairing. This design not only increases the cooling air flow but also reduces air resistance.

And now, because of Cialek's time travel, history has changed again. This fighter jet that almost died in history will enter service earlier!
