Chapter 393 The Birth of the Machine Gun

Artillery is known as the "God of War" and is still the main firearm in the army today. In the era of pre-loaded artillery, both artillery launching drugs and projectiles were used in the front-loading mode, which led to a problem that restricted the development of artillery performance. The fit between the projectile and the cannon's body tube was not good enough, and air leakage occurred, which eventually led to a decrease in the artillery firing accuracy.

The fundamental reason for this situation is that in order to allow the front-loaded artillery to load the projectiles smoothly. The diameter of the projectile used for the front-loaded artillery needs to be smaller than the caliber of the artillery. When the artillery is fired, the gas from the gunpowder will be lost from the gap between the projectile and the barrel.

Because the diameter of the projectile is smaller than the caliber of the gun at this time, the projectile will bump with the gun barrel, which not only affects the movement trajectory of the projectile, but also further damages the gun barrel. In this case, if further development of artillery technology is to be carried out, it is necessary to change the artillery from a front-mounted cannon to a rear-mounted cannon.

The rear-loaded artillery allows the diameter of the shell to be slightly larger than the caliber of the gun so that the shell can be closely attached to the rifle of the gun, which not only improves the efficiency of the launching medicine, but also allows the projectile to maintain a relatively stable movement state in the barrel. The only problem with the rear-loaded artillery compared to the front-loaded artillery is. How to ensure the airtightness of the rear-loaded artillery?

In fact, as early as when the first rear-mounted artillery and the Franco-machine cannon was invented, the airtightness of the rear-mounted artillery has always been a thorn. The Franco-machine cannon adopts a wedge-type structure that is more common in later generations. A latch is inserted into the tail of the cannon. The sealing efficiency is still insufficient, resulting in the power of the rear-mounted artillery not being further developed.

The blasting bolt is a unique device for the rear-mounted gun, and the front-mounted smoothbore gun does not have this component. The blasting bolt is used to lock the blasting bore, fire the shells and draw out the fired cartridges.

Most modern artillery uses semi-automatic or fully automatic bulges. Semi-automatic bulges are generally wedge-type. After firing, they are opened with the help of the gun body to move backwards, and automatically close after loading the shells. The loading and firing of the shells are done manually.

Some guns use automatic blasting bolts, and use automatic blasting bolts to open, load, shut down and launch all use the recoil energy of the gun body or the gunpowder gas energy derived from the body tube. Automatic blasting bolts are mostly used for small-caliber anti-aircraft guns, aviation machine guns and naval guns.

Ge Chuanfu's inspiration for inventing the new type of gun bolt was because of the rebar tube, such a rotating thread, which can link two objects together and ensure sufficient airtightness. However, the disadvantages are also very obvious, and the frequency will not be too high when launched.

The screw-type blasting latch has better airtight performance, but its closing speed is slower, so it is mainly used on high-power rear-mounted cannons. The wedge-type latch body opens and closes faster, and is mainly used on various rapid-fire cannons with high requirements for fire rates.

Ge Chuanfu's invention is not a mistake. It can only be said that this is the mainstream high-level method of planning in the 19th century, which is three hundred years later.

Before the artillery test firing, Liu Mingyu still discovered a problem. Although it was only a fifteen-fold diameter gun, it was quite difficult to carve rifle in the barrel that was 1.9 meters long. Ge Chuanfu just used the gun tail port to carve rifle about 40 cm in each direction.

"Wait, why is there no coherent rifle in the barrel?"

"Marty, it's so sad to climb to the sky with such a long and narrow gun barrel, and it's so long and narrow!"

Liu Mingyu also knew that it was a bit difficult now. Although the current tread bed is also called a tread bed, it is actually completely different from the tread bed in later generations. It is indeed quite difficult to engrave rifles in the cannon barrel.

"Can we change our thinking? If we can't engrave it, we can just use water-molded casting. Although the waste rate is extremely high, we can make qualified gun barrels, and then we will heat treatment."

Ge Chuanfu was a little puzzled: "Why did the Marquis have to carve out rifles?"

Liu Mingyu explained patiently: "When our artillery is shot out, the shells will fly around and it will be difficult to hit the target. You have also seen a gyro. When the shells rotate, they will have a certain stability, so this kind of shell can be shot farther and more accurately!"

Ge Chuanfu said: "Marty, this rifle is really too difficult. No one knows the feasibility of casting. We need to continue to explore. We can first try whether this method works. If it works, then look back and find a way to process the rifle. Let's do it step by step, don't always think about getting it done."

Perhaps it was because he realized that it was too difficult to install the rear-mounted rifled gun in one step, so Liu Mingyu reluctantly lowered the standard: "Then let's get the rear-mounted smoothbore gun out first. When the rear-mounted smoothbore gun is completed, then find a way to get the rifled gun..."

Ge Chuanfu burst into tears in an instant. Thank you very much, I can finally get rid of this damn rifle for the time being! He almost drove the damn rifle crazy!

However, no matter what, the rear-loading smoothbore gun is a little easier than the rear-loading rifled gun. It only changes the loading method and adds a locking mechanism, which is much easier to deal with than the annoying rifle.

After experimental shooting of artillery, the four-inch cannon can indeed reach six or seven miles, and a total of sixteen shells were fired, of which the longest range was 3,744 meters, and the closest distance was 3,031 meters.

Ge Chuanfu looked at Liu Mingyu's face and seemed not satisfied, and hurriedly explained: "The Marquis's new cannon is not easy to work with. Some cannons are not easy to work with. It is made of iron and the scrap rate is quite high..."

"Don't use iron in the future. Use brass as a shell. Brass is easier to process."

"Use...use brass! How much copper material is needed to be used!"

"You're just throwing it away after using it once. It can be recycled. What are you afraid of?"

The rear-mounted rifled gun is a semi-finished product. Good things need to be worn more. The rear-mounted rifle is still the same, let alone the rear-mounted rifle. With the metal processing technology level at that time, no one would think that it would be easier to rifle in a barrel with a caliber of only a dozen millimeters than to rifle in a barrel of hundreds of millimeters?

However, in fact, the barrel is indeed easier than the barrel of the artillery, because the jade processing of the Ming Dynasty and the high-hardness carving such as jade and crystal, the hardness of high-carbon steel is only five, and even the hardness of the nephrite Hetian mutton fat jade can reach about six to six.5.

As early as the Liangzhu civilization period, more than 5,000 years ago, linear cutting method was invented. Hemp ropes were mixed with sand and gravel to cut jade. After the bow and arrow, the bow string cutting method was also a common technique for cutting jade. Later, water stool was invented.

The Liu Jiajun's Guns and Cannon Bureau actually comes from pulling the musket rifle like a water stool, which is to fix a thin blade cast from high-strength steel on the wooden table. There is also a detachable piece of wood chip under the blade. The hardwood chip can be stuffed between the wood chip and the cutting head to adjust the cutting depth of the broach.

Because the amount of injected at one time is too large, the cutting resistance will affect the processing accuracy, so a rifle will be pulled in several times. Generally, after pulling a circle of rifles, it is inserted into the wood chip and pulled it again until all the negative lines are processed to the required depth.

Of course, what Liu Mingyu needed was not a straight rifle, but a rotating threaded rifle. For this requirement, the craftsmen of the Guns and Cannon Bureau said that there was no problem. When the broach was used, they moved slowly, and even in order to improve the uniform force, this broach was not pulled by a human, but like a rewind cannon, using a counterweight type. They only needed to raise the weight with a pulley set, and then pressed the brackets, and the stone weighing hundreds of kilograms would fall from a small upper tribe of a miniature shaft similar to an elevator.

The huge inertia effect drove the broach to complete the rifle pull, Liu Minghui, "Who did you think of such rifle?"

"It's Master Ye!"

Liu Ming met Master Ye, an old man in his sixties. From the degree of deformity of his fingers, it can be seen that he should be a silver jewelry processing work for many years.

Liu Mingyu looked at Master Ye and said, "Master Ye, how old is this year?" "Report to the Marquis, the little old man is fifty-eight!"

"Using your method like this, how much can you make a barrel?"

"One rifle takes two hours to engrave. Although four rifles take eight hours, two people operate a broach, and eight hours can be used as a barrel!"

Eight hours are not eight hours, and every day is sixteen hours of work intensity. If it were Liu Mingyu, he would go crazy.

“Is it difficult to learn this rifling?”

"Not big, practice makes perfect!"

Liu Mingyu secretly calculated that if it was just a broach, divided into three shift knives, three can be made in two days, forty-five can be made in a month, and if it was a hundred broaches, it would be 4,500 can be made in a month. If it was a thousand, and two thousand workers needed, then it could be 45,000 can be made in a month.

Just when Liu Mingyu was fantasizing that he could fully replace the Liu family army with a rifle rifle, Ye Xiangrong said: "Marty, we have carefully studied it. With the rifle, it is indeed farther, more accurate, and more lethal, but its shortcomings are also very obvious..."

“What are the disadvantages?”

"Reloading! Because of the rifling, it loads much slower than a musket without rifling. If the other muskets fire two or three guns, it may not be able to fire one shot!"

The bullets with the front-loaded rifled rifle are slightly larger than the caliber of the musket and must be knocked in bit by bit with a hammer. Only in this way can the bullet be fully embedded in the rifle, otherwise the rifle will not be able to exert its power.

The consequence of this is that loading is much more difficult than smoothbore guns. If people fire two or three guns, they may not be able to load a bullet. This is an important reason why Western countries built rifled guns in the 17th century, but they were not produced on a large scale until the 19th century.

In the late Ming novels, jokes like rifling on the iron sheet first and then rolling it into a gun barrel to solve the problem of rifling processing, just smile. If the gun barrel is made like this, it will be a pity for those craftsmen to kill hundreds of people without blowing the barrel in one battle.

It is different from being able to make a large amount of rifle. Europe was able to build rifle rifles in the early 17th century, but it was not until the mid-19th century that it had the ability to make rifle rifles in large quantities, that is, the land war artifact, Minni rifle, which was praised by countless late Ming novelists. The cruelty of the fact is that the Minni rifle they so praised was retired after only 20 years of installation and disappeared from the army equipment sequence forever.

If the industrial technical level can reach the point where a large number of Minni rifles are manufactured, it will be no difficulty to install a rifle afterwards. If you want to use Minni rifles, you will only find a way to draw them by yourself.

All Liu Mingyu needed was to install a rifle in the back. After telling everyone about Liu Mingyu's idea of using a rifle in the back, the craftsmen began to think.

Liu Mingyu started his krypton gold model again. First, he invented the old silversmith Ye Xiangrong who was engraved with rifled, rewarded 10,000 taels of silver at one time, and was promoted to deputy director of the Guns and Cannon Bureau.

As the news spread, not only the Guns and Cannon Bureau was in full swing, but even the Artillery Bureau was shocked. Zhang Yingjiu of the Gunpowder Bureau was promoted from an ordinary miner to the director of the Gunpowder Bureau because of his invention of granular black gunpowder.
