Chapter 41: Cats and Bats (Part 2)(1/2)
When Schiller saw Bruce's dark and unsuccessful look on his face, he knew that the conversation with Catwoman might not be smooth.
"You won't fight again, are you?"
"It's worse than that," Bruce said.
"Well, then which ward she is in now?" Schiller asked.
"I mean, it's worse in Gotham than I thought."
"There are a bunch of bad guys here that you can't blame, because in this environment, they've done well enough," said Bruce.
"I think you should find out now that being a Batman is not that simple, right?" Schiller said.
"Indeed," said Bruce. "I thought I had a hard armor, a helmet that could block bullets, a sharp bat dart, a gun and a bullet. With these things, what gangsters can't deal with?"
"The gun is indeed very useful," Schiller said.
"At least, it can guarantee that someone will listen to what you say."
"I can't say 'you're wrong' to Selena," Bruce covered her eyes and said, "She's actually done well enough."
"Jonathan probably doesn't think so. If I told you now, Jonathan actually grew up in such an environment, and the crime he committed was actually because no one taught him, what would you think?"
Bruce opened his mouth and realized that he originally thought he was just, but later he knew that nothing was absolutely just, but he felt that he was at least just, but now he found that he seemed not fair enough.
He had to admit that he was just about Selena. Many of the gangsters he punished were like Selena, but she was not lucky.
Their family and the past are in a mess. They go to work for the gangsters, not because they are so vicious and evil, they are born with bad people. They are just making a living.
It is much harder to break away from the shackles of the native class than imagined, especially in Gotham.
This fact made Bruce feel a little desperate, and he finally understood why Schiller said he didn't understand Gotham.
Because anyone who wants to completely save Gotham doesn't understand Gotham.
Everyone here is a bad person, but there is no bad person here.
Among these walking dead people, you can't find someone who should be saved, nor can you find someone who should be born to be destroyed.
There is no culprit here, everyone here is the culprit.
This hero's path to upgrade is very different from what Bruce thought. He felt that as long as he arrested enough criminals, asked for information from them, and followed the clues to find the cancers that had been affecting Gotham, and finally brought them to justice, and Gotham would get better and better.
But now he found that this was a bottomless pit. When he captured a batch of cancers, there would be another batch. When he punished one culprit, there would always be another.
No one can withstand such consumption. This does not refer to wealth or body. Harvey believes that it is not the one who reaches the end to win, but Batman, he doesn't even have a finishing point.
Bruce only realized now that his struggle with Gotham would be used up for his whole life.
Then he realized that wealth, equipment and fighting skills really cannot make him a real Batman, because his biggest enemy is not a criminal, but a quit.
The biggest problem he faces is not how cunning his opponent is, but whether he is firm enough, whether he can be determined enough, and that he can spend his whole life to waste with a city that cannot be saved and endlessly.
It's like an ordinary person spends his whole life trying to get the sun out of the west.
Batman stood on the roof of the central building of Gotham. The wind was very strong here, whistling through his ears. At his feet, there were countless mediocre evil people, like a group of nesting ants, from which they could clearly see everything about Gotham.
Batman originally thought that Gotham had no order, there was only chaos here, but now he found that it was not only order, but also stronger than anywhere else. If there was only chaos, he could rebuild the order, but now, he could not even break the original order like Gotham.
After a while, Batman heard footsteps appearing behind him, and the catwoman walked over with his hands behind his back.
Seeing Batman turn around, she smiled, took out a gem from behind, and handed it to Batman with a smile, and then said, "I picked a very beautiful little baby from my collection. Of course, I can't bear to give you the largest piece, but I think this piece is good."
Before Bruce could speak, the catwoman said, "I chatted with Maggie yesterday, and she said I should apologize for you because no matter what, I shouldn't scratch you with a dagger."
"I have never apologized to others. If those people want to beat me, I will beat me back. But I think you are very good to me and even accompany me to go for a ride on a high building, but I stab you. It seems that it is really wrong."
She blinked her big beautiful eyes, and the brown eyes shining in the Gotham-like dark night, saying, "I can tell that you are very upset. I hope this gem will make you better."
Batman looked down at the gem in his hand. It was a triangular ruby, a bit like his ears, cut very delicately and had a charming luster in the faint light.
For the first time, he felt that this was not a mineral that was meaningless to humans except for being good-looking.
Batman asked: "Do you want to hear my story?"
On the other side, Schiller was holding the phone and said, "When he was on medical parole? How did he pass the approval? Although I don't want to blame you, the Gotham Police Department is really a bit too ridiculous..."
He thought about it and said, well, the Gotham Police Department really has nothing to break the lower limit.
Then he said to Gordon on the other end: "I hope he can stay in the hospital and not come back to make trouble, you know, I'm different from Batman."
Gordon hung up the phone and sighed. He knew it was not that simple. Although Jonathan worked hard on many parties, he finally entered the asylum. Victor disappeared and Lantaros died.
However, the old president of Gotham University did not go to prison under the name of medical parole. He has been in Gotham for so many years and has some connections, but he finally succeeded.
Schiller never feared to think of a Gotham citizen at the worst. He knew that the old principal would not give up so much.
Sure enough, the next day, when Schiller was about to get off work, a girl rushed into her office in panic. This was the girl she complained to the school when Christine disappeared. She was Christine's good friend.
"Kristine is missing again?" Schiller asked.
"Worse than that." The girl said anxiously: "Since that time, Christine gave me a safe number. She told me that as long as this number is called on my phone, it means that she may be in danger!"
Schiller speeded up his packing and said, "When did it happen?"
"Just three minutes ago! The phone went on, but there was no sound there!"
Schiller comforted the girl, then called Bruce, and he said, "Bad news, Christine has something wrong again. I wonder if Gordon told you? The old principal did not go to prison in the name of medical parole. If he wanted to take revenge, he would definitely be the first to retaliate against the person who had proved him..."
Bruce immediately returned to Wayne Manor and put on all Batman's equipment. He advised Christine to testify against the principal, so he had to save the girl.
Unfortunately, the old principal learned to be smart this time. He did not use any insignificant gangsters, but hired professional kidnappers. They left no traces. The old principal seemed to just want to take revenge instead of using her to threaten others.
But this just shows that Christine is likely to be in an extremely dangerous environment.
After a while, Batman received a call from Schiller, who said: "The street where the Red Crow Gang was originally located in the East District, the drug manufacturing den that you destroyed..."
Before Bruce could ask why, Schiller hung up the phone, and Batman ran all the way, racing quickly in the night of Gotham.
But now he doesn't have that Batmobile, and the average sports car is not fast enough. It will take a while to get from Wayne Manor to the East Side. Christine may be hurt at any time. Although he doesn't like Christine, he doesn't want to see an innocent person being tragically killed.
Batman hammered the steering wheel hard, and he deeply felt that he had to have a better means of transportation.
Suddenly, an unexpected number came over, and the catwoman's voice rang over there. She said, "Hey, I seem to see your little girlfriend who is waiting for you on the street every day. What's going on? Why did they go to Maple Leaf Street? It's very dangerous..."
"She has been kidnapped, find a way to save her! No...I mean you can stare at them?...Look at them a little further away, and then call me... Forget it, no no, no, don't follow me, just tell me where they went."
"You sound like you need help," said the catwoman.
Batman seemed a little impatient, and he said, "It's not your business. You just need not go out tonight to cause trouble for me."
After saying that, he hung up the phone and drove all the way to Maple Leaf Street.
After a while, Batman appeared at the end of Maple Leaf Street, which was indeed the original Red Crow Gang's residence. He destroyed a den for making and producing poppy here. Batman had a good memory. He walked forward along the right side of the street and turned over two alleys.
As soon as he reached the end of the alley, he heard fierce fighting and gunfire coming from inside. Batman quickly found the back door and pried the lock open. When he entered, a group of incompetent gangsters were lying outside in a row. These people were screaming on the ground, as if they had been hit by joint skills.
After passing through the doorman and entering the living room, you can see seven or eight masked kidnappers lying on the ground, a whip with the whistling sound of the wind, almost hitting Batman.
The catwoman turned around and said, "Thank God, this little girl is fine."
Batman turned his gaze to Christine on the sofa. Her clothes were a little messy. If Catwoman hadn't come in time, something might have really happened.
Then, the catwoman sniffed and frowned and said, "No, why did I smell a smell of oil? Your car leaks oil? No, no! Maybe it's a mob, hurry up and leave here..."
Before she could finish her words, the glass at the main entrance was broken and countless molten bottles wrapped in strips were thrown in.
The blazing flames suddenly blew up. In this abandoned den, there were many fabric sofas, curtains and other combustible materials.
After a while, the fire became very fierce. Bruce carried the unconscious Christine. As soon as they walked to the back door, they found that the back door that had been pried open had been blocked from outside by heavy objects.
Obviously, this is a premeditated trap.
Batman's clothes are fire-proof, but if they continue to burn like this, Christine and Catwoman are both dangerous. Moreover, fire-proofing of clothes does not mean that they are choking. The fire is getting bigger and bigger, and the thick black smoke makes the whole house almost impossible to see anything, and several people cough continuously.
Suddenly, a crisp "clang" sound came from the right side, as if something had fallen down. The catwoman reacted quickly and the whip blew directly over, but when she dragged it back, it turned out to be a fire extinguisher!
Regardless of how the fire extinguisher came from, Catwoman shook it hard with the fire extinguisher. Batman said: "Walk from the place where they threw it into the molten bottle, there should be a vacuum area there!"
Batman was holding a fire extinguisher to open the way in front, and Catwoman held Christine behind him.
Sure enough, the man who threw the flask was very strong, so that the flask could land in the center of the hall, not in front of the door. There was no combustible material except a small carpet in front of the door. Batman used a fire extinguisher to put out the burning flames, and the two of them rushed forward.
Walking to the front of the door, Batman first broke the door lock with his gun, and then began to hit the iron door with all his strength.
The man who threw the moor bottle was obviously in a hurry, and the front door was not as blocked as the back door. Batman hit the front door a few times and opened a gap.
But this also means that the air began to circulate, the fire became bigger, and Catwoman was almost choking and fainted. Batman could clearly feel his hand on his shoulders beginning to slide down a little. Once he lost consciousness, she and Christine would definitely die.
Batman used all his strength and finally hit him hard. With a "bang!", the door was opened, and the three of them escaped. Catwoman was breathing in big mouths. At this time, both Batman and Catwoman were covered in traces of smoke and fire.
After sending Christine back, Batman asked the Catwoman sitting in the passenger seat while driving: "Why did you rush in and save Christine? That's dangerous, isn't it?"
The catwoman was still excitedly looking at the interior of the luxury car. It was obvious that she had never taken such an expensive car.
She cleared her throat and relieved her excitement. After a while, she said, "Actually, I just thought about a lot of reasons for you to praise me, such as I plan to learn from you to be a good person, such as I am actually a righteous female hero at heart, or I can't stand the kidnappers hurting innocent people..."
Then Catwoman looked at him, and Batman felt his heart beating again as he was staring at the brown eyes.
"You don't want me to do bad things, but I really like those gems so much. Then I can do bad things and do good things again, wouldn't that be enough?"
"...Okay, actually I just want you to be happy." The catwoman shrugged.
"I know, I can't become a big hero. I just like to steal things. This is a habit I have developed since I was a child. I don't know how to tell any big truths. Perhaps the girl who always waits for you on the street is much better than me. After all, she has received higher education, is beautiful, charming, and is simple and ignorant, and has never done bad things."
To be continued...
