Shuangyu Island

Shuangyu is an island, more than 60 miles southeast of Dinghai County, Shuangyu Port, Liuheng Island, near Ningbo, Zhejiang, has been uninhabited for a long time (friends familiar with the history of the early Ming Dynasty know that when Zhenguo Gong Tang He rectified the coastal defense, in order to prevent the island residents from colluding with pirates, all residents on coastal islands were moved to the mainland to replenish ship owners).

The island has a steep terrain, with east and west mountains facing each other, and water mouths connected from north to south. There are also small hills like gates blocked, which is conducive to war defense. The middle is about twenty miles wide, and it is a good intermediary for trade between the South and the mainland. If Franchis directly comes here to trade, you can avoid paying taxes to the Guangdong Maritime Bureau. If the mainland trades here, you don’t need to go far to sell the goods. It is a joy. However, the mainland trades on the island, and the frequent exchanges attracted the attention of the court. At this time, Zhu Wan, who is known for his iron bowl, was the governor of Zhejiang.

The destruction of the Shuangyu base was in April of the 27th year of Jiajing. After breaking Shuangyu, Zhu Wan came to the island to investigate. He was surprised to find that there were more than 40 miles long wide and flat ancient roads in , and he blurted out: "The thieves have occupied it for a long time, and there are so many people and goods that cannot be seen." Due to the sudden incident of the , ships from the outer sea and other parts of the coast are still coming. According to statistics, from April 7 to May 10, there were more than 1,290 merchant ships coming from the overseas sea, and the scale of their trade can be imagined.

Shuangyu Port became a base for smuggling trade in 1526 (the fifth year of Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty). At that time, the pirate Deng Liao (Liao is the honorific title of the leader) attracted the "fanyi" of the South China Sea countries to occupy this place; then, Li Bantou (Li Qi) and Xu Dong (Xu Er), who escaped from Fujian, also participated. Chinese maritime merchants, namely the pirate Li Bantou and Xu Dong brothers, used Shuangyu Port as the base to attract the Portuguese, Japanese and people from the South China Sea to travel to and from various ports to carry out international smuggling trade on the East Asian maritime. The Chinese commodities operated by these maritime merchants were of many aspects, including raw silk, silk fabrics, silk cotton, cotton cloth, brocade, mercury, iron pots, ceramics, medicinal materials, etc.
