Chapter 3 Refugee Camps (Part 2)

Now even David, who is responsible for managing refugees, can't figure out how many Chinese refugees have flocked to the refugee camps in order to avoid the war.

These people are like losing their souls, no hope, no goal, and just living mechanically, sitting there motionlessly. Except for their hearts still beating, they are really not much different from dead people!

Only when it is time to distribute relief food, the children in the Scout uniforms cook the big pot of porridge in the marching pot and smell the tempting smell of the rice will their eyes slowly regain a little bit of their spirit.

Holding a porcelain bowl in your hand, I lined up to get a bowl of porridge. This was really a bowl of porridge, so thin that it could almost even be seen by the figure. It was so thin that you could count the rice grains inside as long as you wanted, but it was a bowl of porridge that could barely starve to death!

After pouring them into their stomachs, the refugees crawled back to their original positions and continued to stare at the air.

In this case, the sound of a muttering sound of one who drank porridge while whispering, became very clear, "My home is gone, and the shop is burned by the Japanese. Every day, sleeping in such a broken straw shed, and drinking such pigs will drink, the government should compensate me!"

Listening to such complaints, a hint of sarcasm slowly rose in Lei Zhen's eyes.

Lei Zhen sat in this refugee camp farthest from everyone and no one wanted to come to a remote corner. He never took the initiative to talk to others. He just silently looked at everyone with his eyes that were almost without emotional fluctuations, and looked at their every move in a bystander's posture.

In fact, no one is willing to get too close to Lei Zhen, and no one is willing to be friends with him.

Lei Zhen's eyes were so cold. The most terrifying thing was that his pupils seemed to be astigmatized. Even if you sat in front of him, you could not judge by his eyes whether he was looking at himself or shifting his attention to other corners.

With such a terrible pair of eyes, Lei Zhen did not understand what it means to stop at the right time, nor did he know what it means to be polite. Once someone walked into his side, his eyes would be so unconcealed and fell directly on others' faces. Facing the pair of pupils that flashed with cold light and no trace of emotional fluctuations, anyone who faced him would involuntarily feel a chill surge in his whole body. The final outcome was that no one could withstand Lei Zhen's gaze and stay by his side for five minutes!

But Lei Zhen was not lonely. His "son" was obediently lying in his arms, closing his eyes and enjoying the comfort brought by Lei Zhen's right hand gently stroked his smooth back. And it also stretched out its tongue and licked and licked the wound on Lei Zhen's left arm where he removed the cloth strip, using a wolf-like way to help Lei Zhen treat the wound.

"The Japanese have good food in Hongkou Concession. Why don't you go to find them to eat? The Japanese cooked your shop. Now they have occupied Shanghai and there are Japanese soldiers everywhere. Why don't you ask them for compensation?"

A crisp sound suddenly spilled throughout the refugee camp. A girl who seemed to be only seventeen or eighteen years old but with a kind of heroic figure walked into the refugee camp. A fire-like enthusiasm followed her brisk steps and rushed into the too lifeless refugee camp. The refugee who had just complained was speechless.

This girl is about 165 cm tall. She has a well-tailed Scout uniform and a military cap with a slightly American Western cowboy style, making her look even more and more upright. Her bright and open eyes naturally make her have a kind of strength as a woman, which makes people involuntarily have a thought of being close to her in their hearts.

When she walked into the refugee camp, whether it was the Boy Scouts who were busy all over the place, the Shanghai citizens lying in the refugee camp, or the officials sent by the British government to inspect, they all smiled kindly at the girl, and many people greeted her kindly: "Hey, Yang Huimin, are you here?"

Yang Huimin responded to everyone's greetings. The entire refugee camp space was suddenly filled with her smile, her confidence, and her voice.

Looking at such a hot girl, even a hint of warmth could not help but raise a hint of warmth in his eyes. This girl named Yang Huimin seemed to have a kind of unrestrained vitality and ostentatiousness, and could take everyone around her and fly with her and together.

"I want to tell you good news!"

Yang Huimin jumped to a cement platform. After attracting everyone's attention to her, she synthesized her hands into the shape of a trumpet and shouted: "Listen, everyone, on the other side of the Suzhou River, our army is still fighting! Our army has not given up on Shanghai yet!"

Upon hearing this news, the people in the refugee camp raised their ears together and listened carefully to the dense gunfire from afar, and everyone's eyes lit up. Those who have not experienced such troubled times will never understand the significance of their own country's army to an ordinary citizen.

"Our respectable soldiers are fighting bloody battles with ten times and hundreds of times enemies!"

"Our warriors were surrounded by the Japanese army on three sides. They lacked food and fresh water, and they needed medicine. Although we cannot fight side by side with them on the battlefield to resist foreign humiliation, we can still contribute our strength to these heroes. At least, we must not let our heroes endure hunger when they are bleeding, sweating and fighting against the enemy!"

Yang Huimin waved his hand vigorously and said loudly: "Assisting local public security, rescuing refugees, and helping the army do a good job in intelligence and logistics is our Boy Scouts. But now in war, our staff are tight, so I hope some volunteers can stand up and find enough food and fresh water for the warriors who are still fighting bloody battles with the invaders!"

Everyone looked at each other, but after a long time, facing the expectant gaze of this teenage girl, no one stood up just now when they heard that there were still Chinese troops fighting bloody battles in Shanghai.

But, we really can't blame them. Think about it, how many people who escaped into the refugee camp are not afraid of death? Even if there are, during the long wait in the refugee camp for several months, the bored sitting has worn away the blood of these people. From the continuous concessions of the Chinese army to the full withdrawal of the Chinese army from Shanghai, this series of military failures has made these refugees lose hope for their future prospects.

And... Once they walk out of the refugee camp and return to other areas that have been occupied by the Japanese to do this kind of work to support the national army, they have to face the bayonets of Japanese soldiers and they have to risk their lives!

Yang Huimin stood quietly on the platform, and she stared at the thousands of refugees below the stage. There were so many people here, so many young men who were supposed to be full of energy, but now they are sitting there like walking corpses. They would rather expect to be favored by heaven than face the man who is determined to resist fate.

Until the end, none of so many people stood up and volunteered to complete this meaningful work with her.

"The Japanese ran to our homes because of these robbers that we were homeless. Can we just sit in the refugee camp and complain about the government while hoping that they can compensate themselves while allowing the robbers to continue burning, killing, looting and doing whatever they want?"

Yang Huimin raised his voice and said, "We are not soldiers, so I can't fight bloody battles with the bandits on the front line, but we can deliver food, fresh water, ammunition and medicine to the warriors who are still on the front line. In this way, some of the bullets that hit the robbers' bodies are shot out, and some of the grenades that blow up their tanks are thrown out. Instead of sitting here and staring blankly, why can't we stand up and do something meaningful within our ability?!"

No one stood up, everyone was still sitting there blankly, everyone was subconsciously lowering their heads, avoiding Yang Huimin's too hot gaze.

Yang Huimin's eyes suddenly froze in the most remote corner of the refugee camp. A lonely figure stood straight there like a javelin, raising an arm towards her.

Finally, someone stood up and responded to Yang Huimin's call!

Looking at the proud and lonely figure who seemed too out of place with this lifeless refugee camp, looking at the dog that seemed too strong under his feet, a ray of happiness suddenly rose in Yang Huimin's eyes. The unreserved passion and joy, the smile and beauty that was as bright as a lily bloom, instantly made Lei Zhen lose his mind.

Yang Huimin walked over with great strides. She tightly arranged the index finger, middle finger and ring finger of her right hand, pressed her thumb with her little finger and bent her palm, and sincerely saluted a three-fingered military salute to Lei Zhen.

In Lei Zhen's heart, she really didn't need to look at herself with such happy and grateful eyes. Lei Zhen knew this girl who was as fierce and enthusiastic as a ball of flames. If it weren't for Yang Huimin's help, Lei Zhen, who violated the regulations and brought a "dog", would not be qualified to live in the refugee camp at all.

With this alone, when Yang Huimin was eager to get help, Lei Zhen had to stand up!

When Yang Huimin finished the military salute, she actually hooked her little tail finger's right hand and reached towards Lei Zhen. Seeing Lei Zhen standing there like a piece of wood, without any reaction to her etiquette, Yang Huimin curled her lips in dissatisfaction. She simply grabbed Lei Zhen's right hand, picked out the little tail finger inside, and then used her little tail finger to hook it tightly with Lei Zhen's.

Yang Huimin used his little finger on his right hand and swayed up and down with Lei Zhen's arm. Using this exaggerated movement, she showed how unbreakable the two fingers that were hooked together were. She was still muttering in her mouth, "Hook and hang, and she will not change for a hundred years!"

After shaking it hard for a few more times, a big smile appeared on Yang Huimin's face. She finally let go of Lei Zhen's little finger on his right hand and said happily: "The ceremony is over!"

The ceremony... ended?!

What kind of ceremony did they just perform?!

Looking at Lei Zhen's always dull face, a hint of astonishment finally rose uncontrollably, Yang Huimin smiled even brighter. She tiptoed, patted Lei Zhen's shoulder hard, and shouted with a smile: "From this time, you will be the special staff of our Boy Scouts. Remember, a man's real man, who promised others and made a vow, would have to work hard to complete the work, and would be as good as a cat, and would accept my leader's obedience to my orders and never regret it! Otherwise, if you break your promise and become fat, you will not be a real man, but a little tofu!"
