Chapter 2 The Law of Polar Survival

Smith's feeling was right. In front of the First Marine Division, there were really tens of thousands of Chinese soldiers lurking quietly in the snow and waiting for them to fall into the trap! These Chinese soldiers had thin military uniforms, and some of them didn't even get the necessary cotton hats for survival. Although their superiors had prepared more necessary supplies for them for this sniper battle, their food was still pitifully small. In addition to the seven-day fried noodles, each of them had two more corn that had frozen to death, and a few black baked potatoes.

Knowing that the First Land War Division has not taken the bait and the battle has not started, these Chinese soldiers are very calm when eating. Each of them received a little quicklime, which is really a good thing. As long as they boiled water, they can generate a considerable amount of heat, so that they can barely burn the ice cubes they found into hot water, mix the fried noodles in their cloth bags, and stir into a bowl of hot batter. No one uses the snow powder that can be caught by bent down, because someone clearly told them that if they cannot find a suitable source of water and must use heat to melt to obtain water, they must use ice cubes. Because the same volume of ice can produce far more water than the snow melts. The most important thing is that many people have a misunderstanding in their consciousness, in fact... ice cubes are easier to melt than snow!

This hot batter made of fried noodles is really delicious. More importantly, this bowl of hot batter has re-injected the necessary heat to survive into their bodies, allowing them to quietly lurk in the ice and snow, waiting for the enemy to come.

These Chinese soldiers did not camp directly in the ice grass. They played out the civil engineering operations that Chinese soldiers were best at, and used snow powder and ice to build snow holes that could barely accommodate a person lying in. As long as they fell asleep and piled up the snow powder and blocked the hole, it would be a closed environment similar to the Esmoorian igloo.

Some people also have candles on their bodies, because in a closed and narrow environment like the snow pit, the heat generated by a candle can be used reasonably is enough for them to fight the extreme cold outside!

"Remember, cold climate is a very strong natural force, and its danger and lethality are no worse than those of enemies driving tanks and bombers! In cold areas, cold wind blows over will take away a lot of body heat. This is the result of flowing air blowing on the skin of human bodies exposed to the outside. Simply put, in an environment of minus 9 degrees Celsius, the wind speed of fifteen knots per hour blows on people's faces, which brings coldness, which is equivalent to a windless environment of minus 23 degrees Celsius! Therefore, no matter what method is used, you must protect your body and never let your skin be exposed directly to the air!"

"If you want to survive in extreme cold, there are four basic principles for keeping warm, you must abide by! First, wear clothes loosely and layered. Clothes and shoes and socks are too tight to limit blood circulation, making frostbite more likely to occur, and at the same time it will reduce the amount of air between the clothes and the clothes, thereby reducing its insulation effect. Wearing a few thinner clothes is better than wearing only one piece of clothing of the same thickness, because there will be a non-flowing air layer between the clothes, which can insulate and keep warm. At the same time, it is also easy to take off and wear. Take off one piece immediately when it is hot to prevent excessive sweating, and add one piece immediately when it is cold to increase the temperature."

"Second, avoid excessive heat. If the heat is too high, you will sweat and your clothes will absorb sweat. This will affect your body temperature in two aspects: humidity reduces the insulation and insulation performance of the clothes; the cooling effect caused by evaporation of sweat will reduce the body temperature. Adjust the thickness of the clothes so that you don't sweat. You can partially open the coat or jacket, or take off a layer of clothes inside, or take off gloves, or take off the hat of the coat or reduce the wrapping of the head, etc. When the heat is too high, the head and hands are very effective heat dissipation parts."

"Three, keep your clothes dry. In cold weather, your clothes inside will become wet due to sweating. If the clothes outside are not waterproof, the snow cream stuck on them will melt by body temperature and will also wet the clothes. If there is any, wear waterproof clothes outside, which can prevent most of the snow cream from melting water. Before entering a hot shelter, brush off the snow and frost on your body. No matter what precautions are taken, you will always get wet. At this time, drying your clothes will become the main problem. When you are walking, put the wet gloves and socks in the bag.

Wrap it on top. At freezing temperatures, sometimes the wind and sunlight will blow dry and dry clothes. Or you can put gloves and socks close together and not fold them, your body temperature will dry them. In the camp, you can hang wet clothes on the top of the tent with a drying rope or a temporary rack. You can also create a fire so that you can dry every piece of clothing. Dry leather clothes slowly and don’t be too anxious. If there is no other way to dry your boots, place them between the outer layer of the sleeping bag and the lining, and your body temperature will help dry them.”

"Four, keep clothes clean. This is important from the perspective of hygiene and comfort, and in winter, it is equally important from the perspective of warmth. Clothes with dust and grease will greatly reduce their thermal insulation. If the air layer between the clothes is squeezed or filled, the heat from the body will be more likely to be lost."

...

Every company commander, platoon leader, or even squad leader, remembered these words without missing a word. Although many people still cannot fully understand the meaning of these words, each of them firmly remembers how to first aid when someone is frostbite. They all know that in this environment, there will be trench foot disease and foot seepage. They all know that in an extremely cold environment, the amount of drinking each soldier must be controlled. If they drink too much water, they will have to get up to relieve their hands at night, which will waste a lot of calories in the body. However, if they drink too little water, once dehydration occurs, the soldiers may face death in a short period of time. They also know what sunlight burns are, and know that in this world, there is another disease that may make your eyes unable to see anything clearly for a long time, called "snow blindness".

Every grassroots officer is meticulously doing everything they have learned, can do, and can do. They feed the frozen soldiers ginger and pepper water. In order to save the frozen soldiers, they took off their clothes in the snow pit, hugged their soldiers, and used their body temperature to save the lives of those brothers.

They have done everything they can do, but when a difficult night passed and the sun finally poured the sunshine and a little warmth on the ground, the squad leader, platoon leader, and company commander shouted one by one through the snow cave, and shouted one by one, there were always some snow caves that never responded again.

Looking at the brothers who were lying in the snow hole and had closed their young eyes forever, holding these soldiers who had been together for many years, were more like brothers than their brothers. The grassroots commanders were sucking their noses gently, and their lips kept stammering.

In their eyes, a soldier on the battlefield died, just like a silkworm cocoon finally transformed into a butterfly. As the saying goes, walking by the river often, how can you not get wet your feet? If you march in a strange land, you may encounter some unexpected situations. They can also accept some normal non-combat reductions. But... who can accept the number of more than 700 soldiers who were seriously frostbite in the emergency marches on November 24th alone? Who would like to know how many people, who had closed their eyes forever, and how many people would become disabled even if they did not die for the rest of their lives?!

A company commander widened his eyes, and finally he couldn't help crying. The snow cave in front of him was quietly lying inside. No matter how he shouted or how he could no longer open his eyes, the soldier who could no longer open his eyes was his deputy company commander. The deputy company commander did not block the entrance with the snow. He even deliberately expanded the entrance to the entrance in the direction of the cold wind. The thin marching blanket sent to him was not covered with it, but was folded squarely by him, and pressed under his head as a pillow.

He was frozen to death, and was deliberately frozen to death. Just at his hand, he left a suicide note.

"When the No. 24 marched urgently, I wanted to pull up a soldier who had been tripped, but my right hand was scratched, which caused frostbite. I had completely lost consciousness yesterday. I don't know how many times I tried, but I found that I could no longer pull the trigger and fire the gun, and my hand was ruined! I have traveled all over the world in my life, and I don't know how many times I crawled out of the pile of dead people. The Japanese bombers did not blow me to death, and Chiang Kai-shek's cannon did not blow me to death. I have never taken my life seriously. Is my right hand aborted?

If it is related, I can cheer up my brothers and use my left hand to help everyone load bullets and wipe guns. But last night, I realized that my feet were also frostbite, and my ankles were swollen like a carrot, and I couldn't even stand up. I have become a completely useless man, a deputy company commander of the charge company, and can only hide at the back, and can't even drive the gun, and can't even walk. On the battlefield, I will only become your drag bottle. Even if I send it back to my country, what's the point of living?

So, I chose to die. At least, I died on the battlefield. I am still a dignified martyr! Company Commander, this time I did not get your approval, so I made such a decision. Please let me choose my own way at the end! Company Commander... I'm sorry! If we have the next life, we will still be brothers!!!"

The letter ends here.

Such stories continue to happen on this plain where ice and snow blend. Before the battle began, I don’t know how many heroes who died in the eight-year war of resistance and the three-year war of liberation were always in this foreign land and fell into a permanent sleep.

It is in the vast universe, in the foot of this blue planet called the Earth, in the snowy world called the Gama Plain. It is under the illumination of the rising sun, I don’t know how many Chinese soldiers have tears of sadness on their faces, and raised their heads. They faced the Northeast of China, passed through the biting cold wind from Siberia, and came to the snowy plain, and turned their eyes to the distant south. I don’t know how many people were thinking about the same word: Fight!

war!
