Chapter 17: The Battle of the Bastille (6)
"Luka, wake up!Luka!"
Gilles's cry awakened Luka from her memories. She opened her eyes and saw Gilles looking at her above. Luka woke up and showed a clear rejoicing, but soon, she brought a little concern:
"What's wrong? Luka? Where did you get injured?"
Luka lay down, looked at the posture above and felt the situation in her body carefully, then sat up, shook her head and signaled that she was fine.
She found that the sun had risen.
"What time is it now?" she asked.
"I don't know, the sun has been rising for a while."
"How was the offense last night?"
"Failed. I let them retreat after you fainted. The soldiers are still resting now." Giles said, seeing Luka's expression strange, he added, "But since you are awake, we can attack again immediately."
Luka shook her head and looked ahead with a blank expression.
"Gilles," she asked, "is everything I do now right?"
Giles was stunned.
"Why do you ask that?" he said, "Don't you want to take revenge on these nobles?"
"For revenge?" Luka's eyes trembled, "Gilles, do you think so too? Are we just agitators of hatred?"
Luka's reaction was beyond Gilles' expectations. After a little thought, he said:
“…If you defeat the nobles, you can redistribute the land they occupied. Isn’t this a good thing for everyone?”
“Redistribution of land.Revolution.”
Luka murmured to herself.
At this moment, a noise suddenly came from the camp. Several fully armed soldiers grabbed several other untidy soldiers and pushed them in front of Luka.
"Report! These people want to be deserters!"
"Be a deserter?" Giles looked at the soldiers who were pushed to the ground with a serious expression. "I should have established military discipline. Do you know what kind of military law a deserter will be dealt with?"
"We don't want to fight the war anymore. We can't fight the Bastille. Lord Luka came on the court last night, but it still failed, didn't we?" the few people begged on the ground, "Let's go back. We don't want to divide the land of the nobles anymore. It's theirs, they all belong to them. We just want to live."
"Bastard!" Giles yelled, "Barring nonsense, disturbing the morale of the army, drag them down and beheaded!"
The few people begged on the ground, but the soldiers on both sides dragged them out without hesitation. Knowing that they were dead, someone among them cursed angrily:
"What kind of a noble master is like! We have no obligation to serve in the military! You are obviously civilians like me, so you won a few battles and really treat yourself as a noble? Are you worthy!"
"I... became a noble again?"
Luka's eyes trembled violently. When Giles next to him saw it, he hurriedly said, "Luka, don't listen to their nonsense..."
"Revolution, revolution, is like the cycle of celestial bodies."
Reciting these words, Luka smiled sadly.
"Let them go," she said.
"Luka, you...?"
"Let me go. As they said, I am not a lord, I have no power to force them to join the army, nor do I have the power to decide their life and death." She sighed, "It's not just them, but those who don't want to fight, let's go."
That morning, the rebels did not attack the Bastille. Nearly two-sevenths of the people who left the army.
All day long, Luka stayed in the tent, holding her knees and silent.
Night is coming.
Luka woke up in a daze from her sleep and heard a faint fox chirping from outside.
The fox's chirping.
She woke up suddenly, stood up, grabbed the sword, and touched in the direction where the sound came.
——"The sky dies, the yellow sky is standing, and the year is Jiazi, the world is auspicious!"
It is this voice, which is clearly the fox's chirping, but can vaguely hear the voice of a person.
Or in other words, it is people deliberately imitating the fox's chirping.
——"Stone man, one eye! The Seine River, the world is against us!"
The sound comes from the wilderness, the closer you get, the clearer you hear.
——"Divine Assistance Fist, Boxer League! Just because of the Black Death, it's a disaster in Paris!"
Moreover, the closer you get, the more familiar you feel.
——"If you die, you will die, and if you die, you will die. The kings, princes, generals and ministers will have a seed!"
Luka saw a black figure. She lowered her body and touched her from one side secretly.
——"Open the city gate and welcome the saint. The saint will not pay the food when it comes!"
She saw the man clearly, he was wearing the fox's fur, but she would not see the figure wrong anyway.
It's Giles.
She pressed her pace and came to Giles's back. Giles didn't notice his arrival at all, and still screamed, imitating the fox's voice, shouting at the military camp:
——"She is Athena's sister!"
"I'm just Luka, Giles."
She put the sword on Giles' back. Giles's body stiffened and then turned around with fear.
"What the hell are you doing?"
Luka stared into Giles' eyes and questioned.
Giles closed his eyes helplessly.
"What the hell are you doing?"
Luka repeated her questioning.
Giles took a deep breath, and then he said, "For victory, Luka. The morale of the army is unstable, we need to unite people."
"I see."
Luka also closed her eyes. At this moment, she understood everything.
"Thank you, Giles. But there is no need. Let's go."
“Where to go?”
"Go to meet the Duke of Aquitaine."
"Duke of Aquitaine?"
"Don't you want to see him?"
"No, if you want Luka, it's better... Actually, I always think that the conditions proposed by Duke Aquitaine were pretty good at that time. It can not only help us revenge, but also help Luka you restore your status as a nobleman and make a comeback."
"So you always thought so."
Luka flew up and kicked a stone on the side of the road.
The Duke of Aquitaine received her solemnly in the barracks.
"I've been waiting for you." He looked at Luka with a smile, "How about you, do you want my army to enter?"
"Will you really kill the Count of Ile France?" Luka stared at him solemnly.
"Yes. I know you hate the verdict of the Count of Ile de France that day. I also hate this consul. I told you the last time that removing this pest is one of the purposes of my uprising. In addition, I promise to give you territory and make you a noble again. This is a reward for your previous series of battles, and it is something you deserve."
"It's not just me! That series of victory can't be done by me alone. You must give appropriate rewards to all the soldiers under my army who fought bravely based on the credit book I provided - according to the standards of the regular army!"
"Yes." The Duke of Aquitaine replied with a smile, "It's right."
"Not only that! You must also share the land of the Count of the Ile de France equally with the soldiers of my subordinates!"
"This request is too much." The Duke of Aquitaine said without changing his face. "The land of the nobles was obtained by their ancestors through various achievements. If the Earl of France dies, his land will naturally be inherited by other Carolingians. You don't want your land to be taken away by other irrelevant outsiders after you die, right?"
"Okay... Then the siege of the Bastille is left to you. We will assist you from the side."
“This is the wisest choice.”
