Chapter 5: East and West Attack (2)

When he heard that his troops could attack northern Shaanxi, Yu Zhenshan asked: "Sir, it is not a problem to completely solve the troops of our two columns, so why should we stop at the Wuding River line?"

"Don't just see Jing Yuexiu, but also Yan Xishan on the east side of the Yellow River." Zhao Zhenzhong pointed at the sand table and explained, "The army will fight according to the current advancement speed of our troops. Before we can reach the Yellow River, Yan Xishan will be able to increase troops in northern Shaanxi."

The distance from Dingbian to Hengshan is about 200 kilometers, and there are still 200 kilometers from Hengshan to Fugu. If the army fights, it will take 400 kilometers in one go, depending on the existing conditions of the People's Army. From the map, it is closer to the east from Qiaoshan, but there are no ready-made roads here, all of which are gullies on the loess hills, which is even more time-consuming to walk.

As long as there are 4 or 5 days, it is enough for Yan Xishan to transfer troops across the river. However, the two ferries at Jun Ferry and Jikou are located on the east bank of Wuding River. After Yan Xishan increases his troops, he should first reinforce the important town of Yulin. At that time, it is still possible for the People's Army cavalry to attack, and it is still possible to control the west bank of Wuding River before Yan Xishan.

"At this stage, letting Yan Xishan increase his troops to northern Shaanxi is much more beneficial than if we cross the Yellow River in the future and then fight him." Zhao Zhenzhong added, "It is not the time for us to compete with Yan Xishan in full. It just left Yulin, Shenmu, and Fugu to buffer."

Although it is difficult to transfer materials from Baode to the base to the base after this battle, the materials transported from overseas still need to be hoarded in the material warehouses in the Baode area. If you cross the river to fight now, it will not only force you, but also interrupt the overseas material transportation to Baode too early. This is not worth the loss.

After pondering for a while, Zhang Mingrui said, "Sir, in this way, there are two variables in our battle. One is how many troops can be added to the northwest side of North China; the other is how many troops can be added to the northwest side of Yan Xishan. From this perspective, we need to be more careful in this battle."

"These are indeed two variables." Zhao Zhenzhong nodded in praise and said, "However, in addition to these two variables that are unfavorable to us, there is another favorable variable, that is, the Anti-Japanese Allied Army after Feng Yuxiang left. As long as this group of people is still active in Chahar or other parts of North China, it will be difficult for the Nanjing authorities to launch a large increase in troops to the northwest."

The Anti-Japanese Allied Forces had a lot of controversy over Soviet aid, and even the Soviet embassy and consulate in China came out to refute the rumors. In addition, there were indeed CCP forces in the Allied Forces, so Nanjing and Peking would never let such an armed force that could threaten the Pingsui Line at any time and launch a large increase in troops to the northwest.

"As for Yan Xishan, in Nanjing, our troops are close to the Yellow River, and when our lips are dead, Yan Xishan will indeed increase troops in northern Shaanxi. However, Shanxi and Suiyuan are currently suffering from severe floods. Before the road is restored, Yan Xishan will definitely not have many troops to send to the west bank of the Yellow River." Zhao Zhenzhong affirmed.

Since June, there have been heavy rains in Suiyuan, and the mountain torrents have occurred. The Suiyuan section of the Yellow River has surged at the same time, and all counties along the Yellow River have suffered severe disasters. However, due to the flat terrain and flooding, the troops near the Pingsui Line in Suiyuan have been unable to increase troops and send troops to northern Shaanxi before the water level in the trap is relieved and the quagmire is eliminated.

Shanxi began to suffer severe floods in July. First, the Fen River rose sharply due to continuous rainfall in early July, and the water in the southeastern area of Taiyuan was about a meter deep, and many villages were flooded. In late July, the Yellow River broke in Yongji again, and the county suddenly became a marina.

Zhao Zhenzhong knew that if the weather was still as recorded in history, Shanxi would suffer from the Yellow River breach between Baode and Liulin in late August. Baode had strengthened the Yellow River embankment due to Huamei Company, and other places might inevitably be looted by floods. Although Zhao Zhenzhong reminded Shanxi through Li Yuntian, he even provided some cement, stone and other materials, these materials were misappropriated by some local officials! Seeing that the disaster was approaching, Zhao Zhenzhong was angry, but he was powerless, so he simply made an excuse to leave.

Zhao Zhenzhong crossed the river west this time and entered the base area through the outside of the Great Wall of the Tail, but took some risks. Fortunately, the flood peak of the Yellow River has been reduced a lot, and with the availability of large-powered sailboats, he finally managed to cross the river without any danger.

By late August, the nearly 300-kilometer-long Yellow River flooded area was flooded with two ferries at Jikou and Jundu. Even if navigation could be restored in autumn, the quagmire in the flooded area of the Yellow River could not be eliminated in a few days. As long as the battle took place before the end of October, it would be difficult for Yan Xishan to increase troops in large numbers. What's more, Yan Xishan has always been petty, and it is not easy to increase troops in northern Shaanxi. If he wants him to spend all his money to increase troops in large numbers, it is probably not possible.

After analyzing the forces of the enemy and us, the purpose to be achieved in this battle was clarified. Zhao Zhenzhong pointed to the sand table and said: "There is basically no problem in this battle in Ningxia, Longdong, Longzhong and other places. However, some places in the Hexi Corridor need to be strengthened. From Hongshui County, which borders Ningxia Hexi to the Great Wall section between Wuwei, the Fourth Column is responsible for the defense of the Great Wall section between Wuwei and Suzhou, as well as the combat mission of the horses west of Suzhou."

The Hexi Corridor starts from Yongdeng in the east, Wushaoling in the Gulang area and reaches Yumen Pass in the west, with a total length of more than 900 kilometers. Although the four columns are placed, the total strength of the sect has a total of 50,000 troops, but if the entire line is distributed, it will still appear a bit weak.

Zhao Zhenzhong stared at the sand table for a while and asked, "Chen Zhiyuan, how many people are there in the counties west of Gaotai?"

Chen Zhiyuan thought for a moment and replied: "After two major earthquakes and many aftershocks, the people west of Gaotai have basically retreated to the eastern part of the Hexi Corridor or other areas to be resettled. Now there are only 450,000 people left there. In addition, our column has more than 6,000 troops in Yumen, Dingxin, Jinta, Suzhou and other places."

After a major earthquake occurred on December 25 last year, another major earthquake occurred on January 17 this year, and afterwards occurred several aftershocks of varying degrees. Because of the continuous aftershocks, the original plan to rebuild the home had to stop, and the people in the affected areas were also moved to other places to resettle.

"Since that's the case, mobilize the remaining tens of thousands of people to move to other areas to resettle. After the autumn harvest, strengthen the walls and clear the fields, abandon the counties west of Gaotai, shrink the defense line to Gaotai, and use the rivers between Gaotai and Suzhou to block the enemy." Zhao Zhenzhong decided, "Put a large number of mines on the ruins after the earthquake and hand them over to Zhuma for a headache. In addition, your troops should pay more attention to the Dapan intersection in the northern Ganzhou to prevent the enemy from attacking Ganzhou from there."

Zhao Zhenzhong's decision was exactly what Chen Zhiyuan thought. Instead of extending his supply line to compete with the enemy for the earthquake ruins that are worth little, it would be better to shrink the defense line.

"Okay, that's all I want to say." Zhao Zhenzhong put down the wooden stick in his hand, looked at the people in front of him and smiled, "As for formulating a detailed combat plan and the cooperation between the various departments, you will discuss and solve it together. After forming a specific plan, you will just submit it to me."

Among all, not Zhao Zhenzhong, there are 6 members of the Military Commission including Zhang Mingrui, Zhou Hao, Yang Tianming, etc., and it is not a problem to formulate relevant combat plans. Moreover, in the future, everyone here will have to stand alone and rely on Zhao Zhenzhong to make ideas.

Two days later, a combat plan that had been debated several times and was deduced by the sand table was sent to Zhao Zhenzhong. After Zhao Zhenzhong looked at it, he put forward a few additional opinions on the replenishment of logistics supplies and the use of artillery columns, and then sent it to each column to let everyone follow the implementation.

Afterwards, Zhao Zhenzhong reminded everyone about the relevant matters, and quietly left the northwest base and secretly returned to Baode. Then, he arrived in Qingdao again, and boarded a ship with Zhou Tian and Wu Bingyi who were waiting there to Nanyang.

Previously, Zhao Zhenzhong claimed that he wanted to go to Nanyang and did not say anything casually, but that he did go to Nanyang to negotiate with the Zhigong Party on related matters. However, before he actually set off, he just played a trick and arranged the matters in the Northwest base.

After nearly four years of preparation, the Zhigong Democratic League felt that the time was ripe and was preparing to start the resumption of the country in Southeast Asia. However, before the mobilization, Chen Jiongming and others wanted to hear Zhao Zhenzhong's opinions.

In the original history, Chen Jiongming suffered a long-term life difficulties and was struggling in a corner of Hong Kong, and finally died of illness in September 1933. But now, the emergence of Zhao Zhenzhong and others, especially the material help of Huamei Company, and the goal of establishing a country in the South China Sea proposed by Zhao Zhenzhong have given new vitality to Chen Jiongming and other "traitors" in the eyes of Nanjing authorities. Although Chen Jiongming is now 56 years old, he has a new goal in his heart and his energy is no worse than that of young people.

Zhao Zhenzhong, Zhou Tian and others took a boat to Singapore on August 21, and the variables mentioned by Zhao Zhenzhong and Zhang Mingrui began to play a role shortly after that.

On August 23, from Heiyukou, Xingxian, south of Baode, to Liulin Town, Lishi County, the more than 200-kilometer-long Yellow River embankment broke. The counties along the Yellow River suddenly became a marina. People fled to the roofs, treetops, and hillsides to take refuge. Those who could not escape were washed away by the flood. Taiyuan, Qixian, Taigu, Wenshui, Fenyang, Hongdong, Wuxiang and other counties also caused disasters due to the overflow of the Yellow River.

Seeing that Taiyuan City was about to be affected, Yan Xishan didn't care about anything else and was busy mobilizing personnel to block the water.

Shortly after that, the Allied Army, which was another variable, collapsed, and Fang Zhenwu and Ji Hongchang also parted ways for a while.

After Feng Yuxiang left, facing the puppet army Li Shouxin's troops approaching Duolun, Fang Zhenwu and Ji Hongchang led the remaining 50,000 anti-Japanese allied forces to retreat without fighting and abandon Duolun on the night of August 15.

On the 16th, although Fang Zhenwu announced his replacement as commander-in-chief of the Chahar Anti-Japanese Allied Army, the remaining Allied Army retreated without fighting, Feng Yuxiang, who had previously shouted the loudest, slipped away early, and all the people were unwilling to buy Fang Zhenwu's account and each had its future.

Most of the troops were incorporated by Song Zheyuan and Shang Zhen, while bandit armed forces such as Wang Ying surrendered to the Japanese army, becoming the later Han rebel army, and some Mongolian armed forces also surrendered to the Japanese army, becoming the pseudo-Mongolian army.

On August 24, the Communist Party of China, which had been hidden behind the scenes, finally officially came forward and held a military meeting in Zhangbei County. The meeting decided to officially disclose the CCP’s organizational identity in the Anti-Japanese Allied Army and establish a Revolutionary Military Committee. The Standing Committee consisted of seven people including Ke Qingshi, Ji Hongchang, Zhang Mutao, Xuan Xiafu, and Xu Quanzhong. Ke Qingshi served as secretary and Ji Hongchang served as commander-in-chief. At the same time, it was decided that the troops would open Shangdu west, then go out to Guisui, and then go south to Wei County to realize the intention of Shanghai Central Committee to establish a new Soviet area in the central and southern regions of Hebei Province.

However, because Fang Zhenwu was unwilling to cooperate with the Communist Party of China, the two troops of Fang and Kyrgyzstan, a total of about 15,000 people, parted ways on August 26.

However, Ji Hongchang led more than 3,000 people to go to Shangdu to meet with Gao Shuxun, the former anti-Japanese allied army, but failed. Instead, under the interception of Zhao Chengshou's troops, some of the troops surrendered to the other side. Ji Hongchang had no choice but to lead his troops back to find Fang Zhenwu and prepare to attack Peiping together.

On September 10, Fang Zhenwu and Ji Hongchang changed the Anti-Japanese Allied Army into the coalition forces against Chiang, and asked their troops to capture Peiping and attack Chiang bandits.

Originally, the authorities were still somewhat concerned about the Allied forces holding high the banner of anti-Japanese war, but after the ministry turned to Chiang, the Nanjing authorities and the Peking side had sufficient reasons to eliminate them...
