Chapter 4: Sharpening the Army (1)
All construction projects in the northwest base area are underway. By the summer of 1933, many industries have officially started production. Among them, the most production volume is cement factories. There are 17 factories of all sizes in Gansu and Ningxia provinces producing cement. There is no way, and the construction projects in the base area now require a large amount of cement, but the cement produced by these 17 factories is not enough.
Fortunately, there is no shortage of limestone, clay, gypsum, coal and other raw materials required for cement production in the northwest, so I just need to find a way to increase the output. Of course, due to the limitations of transportation conditions, large ball mushroom machines and mixers cannot be transported into the base area. Only some small and medium-sized equipment is transported in parts and assembled, and then produced in 11 factories. The qualified cement produced by these 11 factories is used in some key projects. The remaining 6 cement factories are all carried out by civil methods, and the cement produced can only be used to build roads within the country.
The metallurgical base in northern Yongchang also produced the first furnace of crude steel using the built open furnace in late June. Such progress is inseparable from Zhao Zhenzhong's attention, Zhang Mingrui, Yang Tianming and others' preparations, and Li Yunshan, Zhu Hanwen and others' efforts after they arrived in the northwest.
After taking Yongchang in the second half of 2011, Zhao Zhenzhong instructed Zhang Mingrui, Yang Tianming and others to organize manpower to build a road leading to the north of Yongchang. At the same time, he also sent people to enter the Dongdashan Iron Mine area for mine mining, earth and stone cleaning before the construction of the power station. With the construction machinery, road construction, earth and stone cleaning, etc. that were put into use here after assembly, were carried out relatively smoothly. By the second half of 2011, not only did the preliminary work of the iron ore production be completed, but nearly 6,000 tons of iron ore were also mined through human work. At the same time, the construction of several power stations also entered the construction stage, and even nearby coal mines also mined some used coal.
The implementation of the preliminary work also accelerated the progress of follow-up work. After the arrival of technicians such as Li Yunshan and Zhu Hanwen in November 2019, they built a coking plant while building a steel plant. In accordance with the idea of "putting production as soon as possible and subsequent expansion", Li Yunshan and Zhu Hanwen organized workers to use machinery and equipment to increase the mining volume of iron ore and coal, while building the first iron smelting furnace and the first steel smelting furnace in the northwest, and realized production in June 2019.
Of course, since it is only the initial stage, the output of each furnace of pig iron or crude steel is not large, which is only more than 20 tons. Moreover, since you can only use diesel generators to supply power, the problem of power constraints has not been solved. Liquid oxygen cannot be produced, and oxygen blowing converter cannot be used to make steel. As for the electroslag re-fusion steel that consumes more power, there is no way to talk about it.
However, with the completion of five reservoirs of all sizes, including Jinchuanxia Reservoir, Dongdahe Reservoir, Xidahe Reservoir, and five hydropower stations with a total installed capacity of 680,000 kilowatts by the end of 33 years, and one thermal power station will be completed one after another, the power bottleneck of the Yongchang Metallurgical Base will no longer exist. At that time, not only will the steel output increase by leaps and bounds, but also the quality of steel will also make qualitative breakthroughs after the oxygen blowing converter method and the electroslag refusion method.
In order to build several power stations needed for Yongchang Metallurgical Base, after He Zhenye entered the Northwest Base at the end of October last year, he took a group of technicians to travel back and forth between several construction sites. After more than half a year, he was so thin that he lost his body.
As the head of industrial construction in the Northwest Base Area, Li Yunshan saw him like this, and advised: "Zhenye, you have to pay more attention to your body. If this continues, your body will collapse."
However, He Zhenye smiled and said, "No one can talk about each other. If you can grow a pound of meat, I will never only increase by 8 taels. Now the northwest is the critical time to lay the foundation, and we cannot relax. Since sir, since we have provided us with a world, we must act like this. At least, we Chinese are definitely not worse than those big-nosed foreigners!"
Li Yunshan touched his thin chin and remembered the hard work he spent on putting into production of the metallurgical base and several machinery factories. With emotion, he could only say with a wry smile: "It is indeed a critical period, and we need to work hard. However, in a few months, it will be much better when the base is on track. You are different. There are also large and small water and electricity, and thermal power are waiting for you to work hard. It is not okay to not pay attention to your health."
"Don't worry. After building these hydropower stations and thermal power stations, some people have trained them. If I can take the lead, I can also be much more relaxed. What I want to do later is to prepare for building a large-scale water conservancy facility in Liujiaxia on the Yellow River as my husband said. However, you also need to produce a suitable equipment." He Zhenye smiled very happily after being able to apply what he learned and with this series of achievements at present.
The equipment needed for the construction of small and medium-sized hydropower stations can also be disassembled and installed and transported in, but the large hydropower units can only be produced by themselves. The early production of combined steel and processing into hydropower units that meet the requirements is something that Li Yunshan and others need to solve.
In terms of power construction, for the sake of the war years, Zhao Zhenzhong decided on the strategy in Gansu, northwest, with hydropower as the main and thermal power as the auxiliary. If it weren't for the winter, reservoirs, rivers, etc., and the hydropower stations would be frozen and the hydropower stations would not be able to operate, Zhao Zhenzhong would not even want to build a thermal power station. After all, the thermal power plant with thick smoke day and night is a very obvious target when the enemy attacked. Considering the combat radius of Japanese aircraft in history, and the reality that neighboring areas such as Guanzhong in Shaanxi were not in the hands of the People's Army, Zhao Zhenzhong decided that the area east of Lanzhou in Gansu would not build a thermal power plant unless it had to be done.
As for the power required for production, construction and defense operations in Ganlong areas, it will be solved by a series of large and small hydropower on the Liujiaxia of the Yellow River and a series of large and small hydropower on the Tao River. Among them, the small and medium hydropower on the Tao River has entered the early stage of construction and should be completed by summer next year; and the Liujiaxia Hydropower Station will also enter the diversion tunnel construction this fall and winter, striving to conduct Yellow River interception by next year.
If it is just for general industrial and agricultural production electricity consumption, it is okay not to build the Liujiaxia hydropower station, but in order to seize the strategic commanding heights of the future, a concentrated factory with huge power consumption must be built. At that time, the power required for the commanding heights project cannot be solved by a few small hydropower or thermal power. This is also the fundamental reason why Zhao Zhenzhong built the Liujiaxia water conservancy project more than 20 years earlier than in history.
In history, Liujiaxia Hydropower Station started construction in September 1958 due to construction technology and turmoil, and was not completed until December 1974. During this period, it was temporarily suspended for three years. But now, Zhao Zhenzhong and others not only have detailed construction plans and construction drawings, but also prepare to use the rolling concrete gravity dam dam dam dam construction technology that originally appeared in the 1970s to build the Liujiaxia Hydropower Project, which will greatly shorten the construction cycle. According to Zhou Hao's simulation on the ship computing center and according to the various conditions that the northwest base can now provide, the Liujiaxia Hydropower Station can achieve grid-connected power generation in 5 years, and by 7 years, the entire project will be completed. Of course, if the coordination is properly and some equipment can be put into use in advance, the entire construction period may be shortened.
When he heard He Zhenye mentioning the Liujiaxia project, Li Yunshan, who had seen the construction plan, pondered for a while, and said confidently: "That is a big project, and the equipment required is first-class in the world. Although we have not built it before, since we have detailed drawings, we will definitely not mislead things at that time!"
"I don't know how Mr. and Zhou Hao came up with such a big project. There are all construction plans and technical drawings. This made me, a person who went to the United States for 7 years, feel ashamed." Speaking of the Liujiaxia project, He Zhenye was full of emotion. He could not forget the shock he had when he first saw the relevant information. Such water conservancy projects are among the best in the world.
Li Yunshan smiled strangely, reached out and patted He Zhenye on the shoulder, and said, "My two uncles and one uncle cannot use common sense to infer, especially Mr. Zhao. Look at the situation they have created at home and abroad with their partners over the years, you don't need any pressure. Besides, it is definitely an amazing achievement for your organization and implementation of such a large water conservancy project!"
He and Li talked about Zhao Zhenzhong at the Yongchang Metallurgical Base, but Zhao Zhenzhong was alert at this time in Baode because of an appointment from the Nanjing authorities.
On June 27, the Nanjing authorities appointed Sun Kuiyuan as the supervisor of the Northwest Reclamation and ordered him to go to Qinghai as soon as possible.
Some people may not know what Sun Kuiyuan is, but if they talk about his great name Sun Dianying, they are not only well-known in this era, but also well-known in later generations. It is all because this man dug up the Qing imperial tomb in 28 years, which made Empress Dowager Cixi not have peace after his death and had been tragic for many days.
The fact that Sun Dianying's troops were appointed by the Nanjing authorities this time was not only good at the Great Wall War of Resistance, but also related to the situation in Pingjin and Chahar after the signing of the Tanggu Agreement.
After the Central Plains War, Sun Dianying's troops once lived in Shanxi for a difficult time. However, when the Japanese army attacked Rehe in the spring of 1933, Zhang Xueliang transferred Sun Dianying's 41st Army to Rehe and ordered him to rush to Chifeng.
Although Sun Dianying was a bandit leader and later became a traitor in his original history, he was not vague at this time when he fought against Japan. After receiving the order, he led 30,000 troops from his subordinates to head towards Chifeng.
However, Tang Yulin's troops and Wanfulin's troops stationed in Rehe at that time were about to collapse with the enemy, and the Japanese army marched straight into the ground as if they were entering a deserted land. Sun Dianying led his troops to reach Chifeng on February 27, and had to launch a blocking battle. After seven days and nights of stalemate with the Japanese and puppet troops, Chifeng fell on March 3, and Sun Dianying led his troops to retreat to the Rehe paddock. After continuing to fight with the enemy for 6 days, Sun Dianying's troops arrived at the enemy, but had to retreat to Duolun, Chahar on March 9.
After that, Sun Dianying's troops fought with the Japanese and puppet troops in Duolun until early April before evacuating Duolun and retreating to Guyuan. Sun Dianying's troops started their business by pulling poles. After a series of battles, they also accommodated the defeated soldiers from Rehe and some volunteers from the northeast who had been retreating from the northeast. In addition, the lack of supplies after the defeat, the discipline was naturally not much better.
When he learned that Sun Dianying had evacuated Duolun and harassed the people along the way. There were rumors that Sun Dianying accepted the appointment of Manchukuo Manchukuo and withdrew without fighting. He Yingqin, who was in Peking, was surprised and suspicious, simply deducted the military pay of Sun's troops and did not pay the supplies. In desperation, Sun Dianying went to Huang Shaohong to complain through the staff of the troops in Peking.
When Huang Shaohong personally rushed to Guyuan area to deal with the Sun tribe's problems, Sun Dianying felt bitter after meeting him: "Although Duolun is a big place on the map, it is sparsely populated and has difficulty in supplying. There are desert and flat sand on all sides. Although there are some mountains, it is completely different from the mountains in the south. There is no grass growing and the mountain is flat, so it cannot stop the impact of the Japanese tanks and aircraft bombing. Besides, there are neither military supplies nor storage there, so you have to find a way out on the spot. Even if the Japanese don't come, I can't stay there for a long time. I admit that the military discipline is too bad, but brothers can't fight with the Japanese on hungry, right?"...
