Chapter 231 Wasteland
This is a dead world.
The strong wind blew from the mounds in all directions and swept across the lake filled with cold liquid. They wrapped the two people walking on the lake, as if they were about to sweep them into the lake.
It was quiet and silent. The storm that blew from the end of the world did not make any sound, let alone a little bit of the roar from the living creatures. It seemed that in this desolate world, only Curt and Liqi were left, and the rest had reached the end before they arrived.
Although I can't see the image of a foothold, Curt must have a "Bridge of Sound Waves" not much firmer than he imagined. Just like walking in the void, Curt carried Liqi on the entity condensed by the "sound" and carefully crossed the cold lake.
Less than one elbow under your feet is the lake as stable as a mirror. Under the reflection of the red moonlight, the cold gray texture makes these liquids look like some kind of solid metal. Without the wind blowing, they remain motionless, clearly reflecting the shapes of the two above.
The bottomless lake water was quietly shrouded in a cold gray light and shadow, and no trace of creatures could be detected in the dead liquid. All creatures living in the lake water might have been frozen into popsicles by the terrifying cold and sunk into the mud at the bottom.
After crossing the "Sonic Bridge" hundreds of meters, the two finally stepped on the first sandbar as the relay point. But after getting closer, they discovered that this small island in the lake was more like a pile of sediments than a "sandbar", and a large amount of light green objects were condensed in the dark sludge.
"These things look... like the remains of some kind of creature?" Stepping on a slightly stronger piece of sand and stone, Curt looked around at the sediment piled up in the mud. "You look at that, it looks a bit like the bones of a bird. The parts of the spine and dorsal bones are still quite complete."
Not only the wreckage that Curt pointed out, but the fine animal remains can be seen in many places in this sandbank. The bones of different creatures of different sizes are mixed in every corner of the silt, and the cold lake water covers their surface with a layer of dull white frost.
Dead bones can make people feel uneasy, and may even affect their mental state. However, in this dead wasteland, seeing dead bodies is not too surprising to unfold. Perhaps it can be said that it is precisely because their existence is taken for granted that people can feel relieved.
None of the bones of these animals are complete. There are many monsters that have never been seen before. They are trapped in the mud that is sticky like asphalt, and I don’t know how many years have existed, but they may be the last posture of the once-in-communist people on this wasteland.
"It may be the remains of creatures in this world."
Liqi responded in a lack of interest: "According to the number of dead bones nearby, there may have been a large number of biological communities around the lakeside. It can be accumulated into this number, either the environmental changes of the degree of change in the world suddenly occurred, or something was massacred here."
If there are living creatures, she might psychogenically analyze what impact this environment will have on the species' ecology. However, looking around, everything that can be seen is only dead bones... They are not dinners for advanced predators, or obsolete products that cannot adapt to environmental changes.
Just as she was lying lazily on Curt's back, something caught her attention by the lake water not far away. Under the red moonlight, there was an object reflecting the light of the moon deep in the black mud. Judging from the shape, it seemed to be an artifact.
Soon, she used magic power like waving her arms, gently dug out a piece of sediment wrapped in a little frost from the mud near the lake. Under the influence of magic power, the ice surrounding it showed cracks bit by bit, and the wreckage wrapped in the thick shell appeared in front of the two of them.
That is a human head.
Perhaps a species similar to "humans" look like they have removed the head of the skeleton model in the hospital and buried it under layers of mud to be eroded by time. Their appearance was no longer visible. Only the few remaining flesh and blood residues were blocked under the cold frost.
However, on the forehead of this skull that was about to be destroyed, a silver metal head ring was still tightly wrapped. The long time left no trace on its surface. The smooth metal structure was like it was just cast, shining with cold light.
It is impossible to tell from experience that this is a decorative object made of metal. Although it looks like an alloy of iron and silver in terms of texture, the actual touch is surprisingly light. The shape of the branches and leaves of trees is carved on the outside of the head ring. The meticulous technique can tell the talent of the craftsman at a glance.
A huge green gem carved into the shape of a shield is inlaid on the forehead guard of the head ring, and some metal wires like vines wrap it firmly in the groove. Through the clear green, you can feel some magic power sleeping inside the gem, but unfortunately you can no longer feel the flowing vitality.
"If it weren't for our world that there were creatures like 'human', then he might have been'once' the remnant of this world. At least I've never seen the metal used in the head ring on his head, and such a decorative technique is also interesting."
Liqi brushed her fingers over the pattern on the surface of the head ring, and then took it off the skeleton's head with force. Although the head ring was brand new, the head had already decayed to the point of only a broken shell. Under Liqi's tough move, she made a little noise and collapsed inch by inch.
"But I can't be sure that he is not a 'extralis'." With a gentle sigh, Liqi threw the fragments in her hand into the lake. "Before I found more control samples, no matter how many similar things I found, it can only prove that someone has been here."
Silently, the steady stagnant water did not swell at all. Even without a few drops of water, the thing that Liqi threw sank into the lake in an instant. From a distance, it looked like a circle of black holes spread out in the center of the liquid that was stable like a horizontal mirror, swallowing the wreckage into her belly.
The head ring made of unknown metal was wrapped in a piece of rag and put into a pocket by Liqi, leaving it to find the tool for further inspection. The head ring may be lighter than the rag used to wrap it, but its cold and solid texture is no less than steel.
Perhaps this was the biggest gain since coming here, but it could not help the current dilemma. Liqi ignored its existence and turned to the high tower in the distance. Under the red moonlight, the dark tower body cast a gloomy shadow, like a giant looking down at them.
"I've had enough rest and prepare to go to the next relay point."
After saying that, she drove the spell again, and with a few highly compressed syllables spit out from her mouth, the sound waves condensed into entities instantly soared into the air. Starting from the sandbank where the two stood, the colorless bridge crossed the stable air and connected to the isolated island in the lake further away.
It is about halfway from the tall tower by the lake. The two people standing on the "Sonic Bridge" can already see the scenery under the tower. There is a ruin like a city. In addition to the black tower in the center and the tall rock creations surrounding it, there are also many smaller towers all over the city.
"This is simply the legendary capital of Thousand Pillars..."
Looking at the city that turned into a ruin, Curt couldn't help but think of what he saw in a book: "In the deserted gray and white sand sea, there is a pillar of thousands of rocks. This is the King's residence city occupied by the demon god. The shadows entrenched, the dead cried, and even the light of the sun could not shine."
The capital of Thousand Pillars, this is the ancient city mentioned in a narrative poem in the corner of the Holy Book of the Wikinas Sect. The proud king boasted of his wealth and army, and eventually led to the destruction of all. They destroyed the entire kingdom and took the royal city that only remains ruins for themselves.
Although it is just a story that advises the world to be humble and frugal, the narrative poem's description of the scene "City of Thousand Columns" seems quite real. In the kingdom with "tower" as the basic structure of the building, the nobler the person with the higher the tower, and eventually the capital with thousands of tall towers was built.
"It's another religious poem... do you really think those things may exist?" Listening to Curt chanting familiar sentences, Liqi muttered unhappily, "Although I know that there are not many materials that record buildings in ancient times, most of which are in ancient documents and paintings collected by those sects, but they are basically some things that sing praises to the 'gods' of their sects."
Most of the poems in religious books and ancient documents are vague, and the records that describe civilizations in the mythical era are mostly belittled by the "self-righteous" magicians. The "ancient cities" in the records are destroyed without exception because they do not respect the faith gods of their sects.
If it is completely destroyed just because of not worshipping it, then what is the difference between such behavior and the "devils" they slandered? Liqi has long since disbelief that any god will be completely destroyed into ashes if that happens. She is willing to accept this "divine punishment".
"Maybe that's the case."
Feeling the sarcasm in Liqi's words, Curt shrugged indifferently: "Maybe the 'City of Thousand Pillars' recorded by the Wikinas Sect is just a dream talk made up by the people who write narrative poems, but the 'city' in front of him is still a ruin of a foreign country no matter how it is said."
Being able to witness the exotic landscape with one's own eyes is undoubtedly a good thing for Curt to discover ruins of the mythical era. The most important thing is that he did not forget that they were brought to this world by a dark "sun" made by a Wikinas style instrument.
Although it is impossible to assert, he still feels that there is an inseparable relationship between the two. (To be continued...)
