Chapter 496 Bloody Battle of Caen (1)
"The areas near the ancient city of Caen will have a special temptation to the enemy's attack!" The terrain around Caen, especially the north and northwest of the city, is very suitable for tank combat. After the successful landing on the Normandy coast, Caen will become the main battlefield. Therefore, at the beginning of the war, he deployed the 12th Ss Armored Division in the area between the mouth of the Orn and the Seine, and arranged most of the combat troops in the northwest and west of Caen.
Everything was ready, and the 12th Ss Armored Division was waiting for the upcoming battle. The soldiers continued to train and strengthened their defenses. In order to avoid losses caused by air strikes, they dug out hidden units for tanks and various vehicles. Just one day before landing, the division completed pre-war preparations in the west of Caen.
The 12ths Armored Division has more than 20,000 soldiers in the Normandy area. Although the division's armored units are short of units, the infantry's weapons are very well-established (infantry light weapons include: kar98k rifle, g43 semi-automatic rifle, stg-44 assault rifle, mg-42 universal machine gun, mp-40 submachine gun, m24/43 wooden handle grenade, "Iron Fist" 30 anti-tank grenade ejector, "Tank Killer" bazooka, etc.). Rpg now has no hunting equipment, because of the Allied air strikes, these weapons are not convenient to transport to the Normandy area.
After nine months of intensive combat training, the officers and soldiers were in high morale and full of confidence in the coming battle. Just before the Allies launched the largest amphibious landing war in history, the team leader (equivalent to the First Class of the National Wehrmacht) Joken Rekff wrote in his diary:
"Everyone is waiting for the expected Allied landing. We all realize that the decisive battle is about to begin. We are all looking forward to our first battle. The Allied forces are planning to destroy our division, the unit they call the "Cream Kids Division."
But we are not afraid of them at all. Sometimes we feel excited when we think of the coming battle. Although we are at a disadvantage, we believe that our battle-hardened commanders feel very confident when they see them shooting with bazooka and machine guns in the mud. What really scares us is the Allied bombers that 'buzz' over our heads and drop tons of bombs."
A communications officer, Walter Kruger's second-level commando captain (equivalent to the major of the National Defense Forces) is also confident in the 12th SS Armored Division:
"They are not only well-trained. They are also disciplined and have a strong fighting will." Like most officers, he realized that the battle situation in northern France depends largely on the performance of several armored divisions, including the 12th Ss Armored Division.
On the evening of June 5, when the phone rang, Captain Flitz Witt, the commander of the 12th SS Armored Division, and his officers of the staff were sitting next to the fireplace in a house in the town of Terilus. Witt learned from the phone that Allied paratroopers had appeared behind the Normandy coastline. The report also pointed out:
"The enemy's air force is very active. But the sea is calm."
At about 1:30 am on June 6, Kurt Meyer was woken up. The Allies might have really started the attack. Less than an hour later, the units of the 12th SS Armored Division received an alarm. Oswald Baker, the leader of the 26th Regiment, described:
In the early morning of the 6th, the second-level squad leader of Cliff (equivalent to the second-level corporal of the National Wehrmacht) rushed into our room and shouted: "Come with me, children, go out, get out quickly! The enemy has landed."
The correspondent on duty ran past us, shouting as he ran, the Americans and the British had landed. At 3 o'clock we were ready. But then the order came, and we returned to the barracks and waited for further instructions."
Just a few days before the Allied forces landed, the Western Front Command assigned the 12th Ss Armored Division to the B Group Army Group command. Although each unit of the 12th Ss Armored Division was ready for combat in its respective alert areas, in the face of various chaotic and contradictions, the Western Front Command did not give the 12th Ss Armored Division and the armored instructor the right to act freely.
How could Li Mo let them go out in broad daylight and be bombarded by the Allied forces? It is absolutely impossible. The armored division without the cover of the Air Force is just a dish. Of course, Li Mo's intention is not something these children can understand, as long as they can faithfully execute the orders.
Even when the Allies began landing in June 30, the Western Front General Command refused to take free action. However, they adopted a tacit attitude towards their approach to the battlefield. According to the 12ss soldiers at the time:
"All day on June 6, the 12ss Armored Division was in place without moving a single step. At night, the order came, and the command of the Western Front General Command was to let them attack the Allied paratroopers in front of them.
The tank column of the 12ss Armored Division had to advance in a difficult manner on the crowded and narrow roads in the Normandy area under the cover of night. Then the vanguard troops exchanged fire with the Allied paratroopers, and the 12ss tanks quickly went up to support. Fortunately, the night was good at night and the visibility was quite good, after all, it was in a full moon state!
The Allied paratroopers were indeed very elite, but they lacked heavy weapons. Under the joint attack of our armored division and infantry, the Allied paratroopers suffered heavy casualties. Many Allied paratroopers were either shot dead or taken prisoners, and some escaped to the beachhead while the chaos.
As the troops defending the beachhead were also attacking Allied paratroopers. The entire space area was full of gunfire, explosions and shouts, and the night gave us good protection, and the damn Allied planes did not make trouble. As a result, our divisions wiped out the three elite paratrooper divisions of the Allied within a night, with only a few fish that missed the net."
Before dawn the next day, the 12ss Armored Division received an order to retreat to Caen. They first arrived in the southwest of Caen. During the afternoon march, the 12ss Armored Division was constantly attacked by Allied aircraft. These attacks disrupted their marching columns, thus greatly slowing down the speed of advance.
Martin Bessel's third-level squad leader (equivalent to a first-level corporal of the National Defense Forces) of the 13th Company of the 25th Regiment said: "We encountered great obstacles in our advance. The Allied air attacks brought death, terror and chaos everywhere."
Their regiment commander, Armored Meyer, jumped out in time before a bomb blew up his command vehicle. Meyer himself described: "The march to Caen was a journey of death. A group of 'breathing fire' began to dive from behind our column. Their rockets and machine guns defeated many of us like a sickle mowing grass.
A soldier was lying on the road, bullets broke his arteries, blood spurted out from his throat like fog, and soon he died in my arms. At the same time, the ammunition truck was detonated, and for a moment, the flames soared into the sky and the debris scattered. But the road was cleaned up within minutes after the air strike. We couldn't stop, we had to move forward!"
