Chapter 5 Night Attack
"There is actually another aviation group to support us. This is the second good news I heard today." When Student learned of the existence of the First Independent Aviation Group, he patted Chen Dao's shoulder excitedly and said.
"General Student, your Seventh Aviation Division is not the only people I have seen, right? These people only have one battalion at most." Chen Dao asked, pointing to the paratroopers outside the woods.
"Of course not. It's still some time before dark. I want to contact other troops and let them come as soon as possible so that we will be more sure in the next battle." Student explained.
At around 7 o'clock in the evening, the "Madam Junker" formation appeared in the sky outside the woods for the third time, and the paratroopers of the 7th Aviation Division were finally here.
"General Student, is this your entire army?" Chen Dao said in confusion.
"The only unit in the 7th Aviation Division can participate in combat is enough," said Student.
"Okay, then we'll next..." Chen Dao was about to speak, but the correspondent suddenly said that Golin was going to talk to him, so Chen Dao and the correspondent came to the radio station.
In the communication room of the Prime Minister's Office, Goring heard Chen Dao's voice coming from his headphones and said, "Heinz, I order you to take a plane and leave there immediately."
"Ah? What did you say? Say it again." Chen Dao's voice came.
"I order you to fly back right away." Gorene shouted into the microphone.
"I can't hear what you said clearly. The signal is bad. If you contact me later, I'll hang up first."
Listening to the rustling sound from the headphones, Goring was dazed. Hitler patted his shoulder and said, "The little guy has grown up and has his own opinion. You have to learn to adapt."
Turn off the radio and found Student. After a brief discussion, the two decided to divide the troops into two groups. The first group was mainly a battalion of the 7th Aviation Division and the remnants of the 7th Air Defense Battalion. Their mission was to take care of the wounded soldiers and act as reserves.
The second route is mainly composed of two battalions of the 7th Aviation Division, plus the remnants of Lieutenant Randolph. Their mission is to pursue the retreating Polish troops in the northeast direction. Chen Dao and Student will follow the action.
After assigning the task, Chen Dao and Student led the team to set off.
When walking past a 150mm howitzer tilted beside the road, Chen Dao pointed to the flowering barrel and said, "It's a pity that these cannons were all destroyed by the Poles."
Lieutenant Randolph said angrily: "I saw them stuffing grenades into the barrel, these hateful Poles."
Chen Dao smiled and patted Randolph on the shoulder: "I have found a batch of new cannons for you, but they will not arrive after dawn. Then you can vent your anger on the Poles."
The two of them chatted quietly while walking to eliminate the sleepiness caused by night and fatigue. It was not until after one o'clock in the morning that a messenger ran to Chen Dao, and Chen Dao left Lieutenant Randolph and rushed to Student with the messenger.
"The outpost troops discovered a village where Poles were stationed, and there were prisoners we were looking for outside the village, with an estimated number of about 200 people." Student said.
"I said that they would not be able to walk fast by suppressing the prisoners. General Student, you are more capable of fighting like this. How do you think we should rescue these prisoners?" Chen Dao asked modestly.
"I need to look at the terrain there and the Poles' defenses before I can make a decision," said Student.
"I'll go with you."
The two of them used the cover of night to touch the place more than 200 meters away from the village. With the help of the starlight in the sky, Chen Dao clearly saw in the telescope that several figures with guns were walking constantly at the entrance of the village, and a group of people were lying in the open space near the figures.
Chen Daoxin said that these people should be prisoners of war. After observing for a while, Chen Daox and Student retreated to the back of a slope. After a brief discussion, the two decided to attack the unknown village at night.
The commanded mission naturally fell on Stutante, and commands were quickly issued. The paratroopers of the two battalions entered their positions with the help of night cover.
Lieutenant Chen Dao and Lieutenant Randolph took a dozen artillery soldiers to the back of a slope, and their mission was to guide the prisoners to escape.
The messengers bent over and walked through the night, informing Stutant of the news that the various departments had arrived one after another.
After confirming that the units were in place, Student raised his right hand, and two gunners from the 81mm mortar group beside him put the shells at the muzzle.
Student waved his hand and two muffled sounds, two flares shining with dazzling white light flew into the sky, illuminating the sky and the earth like two small suns.
"Table ····" After seven or eight crisp gunshots, the four Polish soldiers who were guarding the prisoners were as if they were knocked by invisible heavy hammers and their bodies were shocked to the ground.
The MG34 machine gun was heard immediately. Under the action of the flares, several machine gun positions arranged by the Po Army near the village were clearly visible. The tracer bullets fired by these MG34 machine guns rushed towards them like fire snakes, making none of these machine gun positions work. Several brave paratroopers rushed up with the cover of the machine gun and threw grenades. Several "boom..." sounded out, and several machine gun positions of the Po Army were completely destroyed.
Chen Dao was unintentionally watching the paratroopers' performance. The moment the gunshots sounded, Chen Dao waved to Lieutenant Randolph and said, "Go."
Lieutenant Randolph and his dozen men rushed over the slope toward the prisoners, running and shouting, "Let's go down, lie down, and crawl toward this side."
The panicked prisoners heard Randolph and others' shouts and immediately found their direction, and fell to the ground and crawled towards the direction where Randolph was.
Seeing that he had successfully completed the guidance task, Randolph and others fell to the ground and hid.
Chen Dao hid behind and continued to observe the battle situation with a telescope. Seeing that the paratroopers had already attacked the village, the Po army in the village was too busy to take care of themselves and had no energy to pay attention to the prisoners of war. He shouted to Randolph in front: "Randolph, let them stand up and run."
After shouting for a few words, Randolph heard Chen Dao's words clearly and directed his men to shout together: "Stand up and run."
Hearing the shouts, the prisoners crawling forward jumped up from the ground one after another, swarmed in the direction of Randolph and others. Accompanied by the sound of gunfire and explosions, the prisoners rushed through nearly 200 meters at a speed of 100 meters. They stopped until they crossed the slope where Chen Dao was hiding, and sat or stood there, gasping.
After avoiding a few prisoners of war who were only running and almost stepped on him, Chen Dao looked outside the slope and confirmed that all prisoners of war had safely left the battlefield. He then signaled to Randolph to ask them to retreat.
The gunshots in the village lasted less than half an hour before disappearing. Chen Dao asked Randolph to lead the prisoners of war and ran to Student.
"How are our casualties?" Chen Dao asked.
"Calling," said Student, "How are you there?"
"All rescued, no casualties were found."
About twenty minutes later, Chen Dao and Student had occupied the best house in the village.
"Seven people were slightly injured and two people were seriously injured. The result was that one company was wiped out, and 213 prisoners were rescued. This battle was a complete glorious victory." Chen Dao said.
"It's just a small battle. Look at this telegram, which was sent from the Southern Army Group Command, here," Student said, pointing to a location on the map. "There are nearly 200,000 Poles here, and I think this should be our target."
After reading the telegram, Chen Dao looked at the map and said, "City of Kutno, Poland's Poznan Army, they must be the ones who attacked us. I finally know who the enemy is and where we should go."
······
Rescue the wounded, armed the rescued prisoners with seized weapons, interrogated the captured Polish soldiers, and arranged defensive positions. After a busy period, several hours passed quickly and it was finally dawn.
After some contact, the roar of aircraft engines sounded over the village, and two FI-156 reconnaissance planes swept over the village and flew northward.
Not long after, Chen Dao received a telegram from the First Aviation Regiment.
