Chapter 6: Life and death are big, impermanent and fast

The Monks are a very interesting organization. Perhaps only China has monks in the world.

In fact, before the Sui and Tang Dynasties, both Indian monks and Chinese monks were so-called traveling monks. In other words, they did not live in the same place, but traveled around and learned Buddhism. When they were hungry, they would just take their rice bowls to beg for food. Including the first ancestor of Zen Buddhism, Bodhidharma, they were all such traveling monks, and he traveled the most outrageously, and they traveled directly from India to China.

However, I am afraid of this word "but" in this world. With the gradual prosperity of Buddhism in China, especially with the encouragement of Emperor Wu of Liang, Xiao Yan, a guy who believed in Buddhism and got into his mind, Buddhism was truly prosperous to an unparalleled level.

It is no exaggeration to describe it as unparalleled. You should know that under the rule of Emperor Wu of Liang, nuns were really everywhere, and monks were not as good as dogs. The whole Jiangnan was full of bald heads wearing cassocks, and even the emperor even liked to wear cassocks to court if he had anything to do.

As the saying goes, the superiors must follow their favors. With the unremitting efforts of Xiao Yan, the emperor who was so crazy, it is popular for businessmen on the street to shave their heads and wear cassocks to work. This kind of bald head is probably the case even in the legendary Pure Land of the West.

It would be fine if the number of monks increased just, but the idiot, Emperor Wu of Liang, Xiao Yan, kept sending money and land to the monk temple. Not only did he do this himself, but he also encouraged others to do this too. It seemed that if he didn't do this, he would not show his feelings for the Buddha. He did not consider the money and whether the Buddha of Tathagata could use it.

However, although Emperor Wu of Liang had water in his mind, those monks had no water in his mind. Although the Buddha of Tathagata could not use money and land, monks could use it. Moreover, the monks' temples were tax-free, and all the things planted in the ground were from the temple. It would be so pleasant to eat and drink in the temple, and they were running around. No, the monks who were still wandering around were no knives.

Therefore, there are more and more monks sitting on the ground, or those who live in the temple, who don’t leave, and fewer monks walking.

There are more and more monks living in a temple. Although there is enough food, what should I do if the house is not enough? It is simple. Like later real estate developers, the first phase, second phase, five-year plan and other temples were put on the agenda. Over time, the whole mountain was covered with temples and monks, and the problem arose again.

As the saying goes, there are all kinds of birds in the forest, and there are many chaos in this monk. Then some knowledgeable monks found that if these monks do not have any rules and regulations, they would not be able to manage them. So gradually, they formed a Buddhist management system that India does not have, but only China, with Chinese characteristics, and a Buddhist community.

From this we can see that the monastic community must have rules and regulations, instead of just putting a bunch of monks together and calling the monastic community. Before Sakyamuni passed away, he also collected a large number of monks by his side, and everyone begged for food together, but these cannot be called the monastic community.

Why? Because even Sakyamuni did not establish a constitution that must be followed for the other monks who followed him. For example, today, Zhang San, you go to beg for food, Li Si is responsible for washing dishes, Wang Wu is responsible for taking out the trash, Zhao Liu is responsible for pounding my back, massage, etc., and then rotate tomorrow.

In fact, the Buddha and the monks were begging for food, washing dishes, bathing, sleeping together, and going together everything they did. This definitely cannot be said to be rules and regulations.

Of course, the establishment of the monastic community cannot be completely said to be the purpose of monks eating and drinking. For example, the monastic community with Zen as the core organized by monk Dalin Temple where Wukong is now located is not established for this reason.

In fact, if Daoxin could be chosen, he would probably be more willing to go on foot. You should know that the first ancestor of Zen Buddhism, the second ancestor Huike, and the third ancestor Sengcan are all standard traveling monks.

The reason why Daoxin did not go around or traveled was very simple, and the overall environment was different. Now is the era of the 18 anti-kings and 72 smoke and dust mentioned in the Romance of the Sui and Tang Dynasties. The heroes of the Sui and Tang Dynasties, such as Liu Wuzhou, Dou Jiande, and Wang Shichong, were fighting with each other, and there were defeated soldiers and bandits everywhere.

In this case, even if Master Daoxin goes out for a walk, he has to bring about a dozen Shaolin monks with sticks to his courage. If those monks who do not have such conditions dare to walk around, they are just seeking death. If they encounter Dou Jiande and others, they will be caught and go to the battlefield.

But if you are unlucky and encounter Zhu Can, you might be eaten directly as military rations. Of course, although Zhu Can's preference is to circle people in batches and use assembly line technology to make human jerky. But is it said that you occasionally encounter a bald snack from the air house on the road and don't eat it? This is impossible!

So, in this case, the monks near Jiangzhou and Jiangzhou spontaneously gathered together with Master Daxin as the center and Dalin Temple as the benchmark, both for self-defense and for a good environment to understand Buddhism. If there are too many monks, everyone must set rules, and then this Zen monk group led by Daxin appeared.

"Master, please have tea!" After knocking in the door, Wukong respectfully put the tea in front of Daoxin, then put the small tray, and then picked up a rag and started to plan to hygiene.

Although Goku is responsible for the hygiene of Daoxin's room, since Goku is only four years old after all, so in fact, other novice monks are doing things like sweeping the floor. Goku is mainly responsible for serving tea and wiping the table.

"Yeah, thank you!" After seeing Wukong put down the tea, Monk Daoxin first thanked Wukong seriously, then frowned and took a sip of the green in the bowl. Obviously, although Monk Daoxin needed tea to make his body and mind clear, this did not mean that he liked the taste of the tea now.

"By the way, Wukong." Just as Monk Wukong walked around and wiped the room, put down the rag, and was about to pick up the small tray and run away, Monk Daoxin spoke, "I just received a letter from your brother. Do you want to come and take a look?"

Alas, Wukong sighed in his heart. His elder brother Lu Chengde really embarrassed the Lu family of Fanyang. His younger brother was robbed and killed and almost died, so he was disheartened and planned to become a monk. You, a brother, arrived immediately and showed your brother's deep brotherhood, but it took several days to come and a letter came.

Even if you are stupid, you may be able to see what happened to your brother being robbed and killed, let alone the person who received the letter is a rare smart person in Buddhist history.

However, Monk Daoxin could see this, but he could not say it by himself. Wukong turned his head and showed a bright and sunny smile to Monk Daoxin, "Master, look, I am just a four-year-old child and I don't know a single word. How do you think about Monk?"

"Yeah, you're right." A seemingly kind smile appeared on Monk Daoxin's face, "I forgot that you are illiterate."

As he said that, Monk Daoxin carefully put aside a bamboo paper letter in his hand. It was not because Monk Daoxin thought this letter was so important, but the current bamboo paper craftsmanship was too difficult to match. The paper made of crispy paper was the same as the shortbread added to the pancake fruits that Wukong had eaten in Beijing in his previous life.

Of course, it is a bit exaggerated to say that bamboo paper is as crispy as a shortbread, but it is not an exaggeration to say that as long as it is folded, folded, folded, and then folded, it will break. So generally speaking, as long as it is this kind of paper, Daoxin is always careful when it is held in his hand, because this thing is like the glass later, and is a fragile product.

"I'll just say to you for the master." Monk Daoxin raised his eyelids and swept away Wukong. "Your brother Lu Chengde firmly disagrees with you to become a monk, saying that you are still young, and it's not surprising that you have such a choice when you were shocked, but he still hopes that we can send you home, and your brother is willing to compensate Dalin Temple for a sum of money."

"Oh, my brother is really fascinated by the prosperity of the world." Wukong showed a look of grief on his face.

"What do you mean?" Monk Daoxin looked at him curiously.

"He didn't understand that although people have different ages and genders, the Buddha nature is no different. Although I am just a four-year-old child, my Buddha nature is no different from others. How can I say that I was frightened and had the current choice?"

"So why did you have the choice now?"

"Of course it was because of the incident a few days ago that made the disciple feel touched, so he decided to Xu Shi Buddhism."

"What are the feelings? Life is always empty?" Monk Daoxin looked at Wukong with a smile, "Is that true?"

"It can be considered yes, or it can be considered not." While Wukong was making a solemn and solemn look on his face, he quickly calculated the stories of the Five Lanterns and the Sixth Patriarch's Platform Sutra that he had seen before, to see if there was a sentence that could be correct.

Well, I found it. The words that Yongjia Xuanjue said when he first met Huineng seemed to be useful. Thinking of this, Wukong continued to answer, "Actually, when the disciple was in the car, he heard the screams of Lu Cai and the others before his death, as if it was the disciple's turn in the next moment. At that time, the whole feeling was only eight words."

“…”

"Life and death are serious, impermanence is fast!"
