Chapter 35: Establishing the Base of My Zen Buddhism

"Haha! Good disciple, aren't you very smart? Why can't you figure out such a simple thing? Even the Tiantai Sect, the largest rich man among the monks in Bingzhou, doesn't pay a copper coin. Do you still expect the monks of Vitan, Chengshi Sect, and Nirvana Sect to pay for the money?"

"Master, if they are all poor, what should I say if Qi calms them down?"

"Yeah, yes!" Master Daoxin touched his beard thoughtfully, "If you are a master, you can only say that the Taoist priests were so poor that they could only go to beg for food. Look, disciple, Qi Pingding is at least considered the Taoist lord of Louguan Tao, the leader of the Taoist sect, and the masters of several Taoist temples, but in order to flatter Li Yuan, he could even change his name. What do you think this means?"

"What does it mean, Master?"

"It means these Taoist priests are already scared!" Master Daoxin said earnestly, "Otherwise, Qi Pingding is still an old man, how could he do such shameless things? But good disciple, don't worry about those Taoist priests, you little novice monk, where did your master just talk about it?"

"The Taoist priest is very poor!"

“Where is the front?”

"The monks are very rich!"

"Yes, that's right, the monks are very wealthy and good disciples. How do you know how those monks lived when the Buddha was in India?"

"It seems like begging for food?"

Pa! A ruler appeared in Zen Master Daoxin's hand again.

"Give charity, believers give charity!"

"That's right, it depends entirely on the believers' giving. To put it bluntly, it's like a parasite." Master Daoxin turned his hand and put away the ruler, as if nothing had happened. He continued with a kind smile, "A monk who relies on giving can practice with all his might and be brave and diligent, but there is also the biggest problem. What do you think?"

"The disciple doesn't know."

"The problem is that it is easy to make people envy that you can eat and wear well if you do nothing, especially when most of the believers who give alms are not as rich as the monks. Of course, it is not that the monks in Tianzhu did this wrong. In fact, most of the monks in Tianzhu have neither land nor money, so they will not have such problems if they receive alms."

"Well, I understand, no one will be jealous of a poor beggar Hanako."

Bang!

"But the problem is that our monks are different from those of Tianzhu. Our monks have both money and land and can get it for nothing. Good disciple, think about it, more than 40 million acres of land, which emperor can watch so many good fields in the pockets of our monks who are not jealous?"

"Emperor Wu of Liang Xiao Yan!"

"Don't mention that idiot to me."

“…”

"Master, what exactly do you want to say after saying this for so long?"

"I just want to tell you why my teacher decided to move south to Zen. Since the Southern and Northern Dynasties, my Buddhist status has become higher and higher, and the more wealth and land the Buddhist temple has, the more this happens, the more inappropriate you will feel. The current situation of my Buddhist temple is like a baby walking in a downtown city with gold in hand, and it is impossible not to be robbed."

"For example, what happened to Xue Daoheng's death that my master told you last year? Although the dilemma of my Buddhism at that time was related to Xue Daoheng's fuel, the more important reason is that people think that monks are too rich and leisurely, so ordinary people who are not my Buddhist believers all want to see monks unlucky."

"Well, I probably understand the kind of hatred of wealth you said."

"Qiu Fu, disciple, you are a good word. Tell me, why do you have a house, land and money? And when you want to change your taste, you can come to my house for free for free. But I have neither a house, no land and no money. Don't say that if you change your taste, if you don't have enough food, you can only wait to die by yourself?"

"Let me think about it, because you don't want to shave your head?"

Bang!

Master Daoxin calmly picked up the teacup and took a sip, "But what you said this time is correct. Can monks have such a big gap, so there are more and more monks. And these are not the purpose of my Buddhist practice. The Diamond Sutra says that if you see me with your appearance and seek me with your voice, it is a person who will follow the evil path and cannot see the Tathagata. Not to mention becoming a monk for the sake of good food and drink, so I am worried that if the Buddhists still accumulate wealth like this, they will be afraid that the disaster will not be far away."

"So, when I was a teacher, I considered how my Zen Buddhism should develop in the future. Finally, I thought of several ways: First of all, I should show my enemy weakness. Now most sects want to develop in cities like Chang'an and Luoyang, but as a teacher, I will do the opposite, leave the prosperous cities and go to the simple villages to establish my Zen base."

Wukong felt a little embarrassed! How can this sentence sound familiar to people? It is simply a Buddhist version of the rural strategy of Taizu in New China.

"As long as a person does not achieve supreme enlightenment, the things he can remember are limited. Many things that are not in front of him will not be remembered if no one reminds him. Therefore, when we move Zen Buddhism to a place where the emperor cannot see or think of it, no one will mention it. On the one hand, it will be much safer, and on the other hand, the simple folk village is more conducive to promoting Buddhism."

"Secondly, give up the support of believers, and the monks work on their own and support themselves. This measure can not only strengthen the relationship between us and believers, but also reduce the jealousy and resentment of the monks by those who are not believers in my Buddhists."

"I believe that if my Zen Buddhism could develop according to these two principles, we might develop slowly in the early stage than other sects. However, if there is really an emperor who wants to destroy the Buddha because of too much wealth accumulated by Buddhism, my Zen Buddhism would not have cut off the inheritance because of such a disaster."

In history, although countless stupid people were shouting nonsense about the unity of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, it is undeniable that these three religions have never been equal.

The most prosperous one is naturally Confucianism, because the people of this sect are all superior, as the saying goes, everything is inferior, but only high school reading. Of course, because of this, although Confucianism is on par with Buddhism and Taoism, those real scholars actually look down on the other two sects in their hearts.

Although Taoism was suppressed for a period of time during the Southern and Northern Dynasties due to the influence of the peasant uprising led by Sun En, the Tang Dynasty, under the support of the Li family dynasty, developed to an unprecedented level, with countless Taoist gods coming and going, one after another.

ps: Thank you for the reward for Guangzhu returning to Feng Chui. Alas, when you think about half of the meeting, Feng Chui felt a burst of heartache!
