Chapter 31 Activision
"I want a game, I know I need it, I'm going to do it now, let's develop a game."
This is what James Cameron insisted on doing when he just started the preliminary preparations for "Avatar". (Note 1)
With the development of digital technology, the combination of electronic games and movies, which also belong to the creative entertainment industry, will become closer and closer. "Tomb Raider", "The Matrix", "Lord of the Rings", etc., either games are adapted into movies or movies are adapted into games, blending with each other. Games can use the huge social influence of movies to attract popularity, while movies can make huge post-production profits through games.
Several leading groups in Hollywood will be coveted by electronic games in the future. Sony has PS series consoles, Universal's parent company has Activision Blizzard, Time Warner and Disney have hundreds of millions of game development funds. Therefore, in Shen Chong's view, electronic games are a must-fight place.
"Can you be sure there is no legal problem?" Chen Chong asked again before signing.
"My friend, in this world, everything is risky." Galley Hendler said with a professional smile: "I can only say that with the current laws in the United States, even if Atari sues, the chance of winning will be very low." (Note 2)
This guy is a lawyer introduced by Orwitz. The charges are so expensive. He dares to say that after acquiring Activision Games, there should be no major problems. Chen Chong no longer hesitated and happily signed the name on the documents of investing in Activision Games Production Company.
That's right, Shen Chong wants to invest in controlling Activision Games.
Chen Chong knew the name Activision because after it merged with Blizzard, it could still rank the name first, which was obviously not an ordinary game company.
As for the rest, Chen Chong knew nothing, but when he was with talkative James Rover, it seemed that it was not difficult to find out at all. Soon he figured out the details of Activision game production company.
In 1972, Nolan Bushnell, a legendary figure in the history of electronic computers, used his wife to send him $500 to set up Atari, and then assembled the first game console in his youngest daughter's bedroom. Two years later, Atari's sales exceeded $15 million. In 1977, Warner invested $28 million to acquire Atari. However, in 1978, the Atari VCS game console that cost $100 million to develop was backlogged and suffered an astonishing loss. Warner was originally optimistic about the home game console market and came to make money, but unexpectedly he wanted to pay for it. So he was very upset and paid $15 million in termination fee and kicked Bushnell out.
After Bushnell was driven away, Warner found Ray Kassar, a businessman who used to trade textiles, to be the new president of Atari. After the new president took office, he fired some old employees and terminated some R&D projects that he felt were unnecessary. Then he felt that the company's culture was too "scattered", vigorously rectified, and strengthened discipline, which aroused the anger of the game development engineer who was already full of resentment.
In the 1970s, when the computer industry was still the king of hardware, game development engineers were like the behind-the-scenes staff under the Hong Kong blockbuster system. They could only earn a salary. No matter how much movies or games were sold, there was no benefit. The behind-the-scenes staff could at least leave a name on the screen, while game development engineers did not even have the qualification to leave a name in the game.
This tradition comes from the Blue Giant IBM, a leader in the computer industry, so although engineers are dissatisfied, there is nothing to say.
However, "people compare people and people die, and goods and goods have to be thrown away." The Master said, "Don't worry about the lack of money but the inequality." After Atari was enfeoffed by Warner, these game engineers came into contact with Warner's film department. After comparison, they felt that they were rising sharply, just like the recent oil prices - they were creative jobs, and they also made a lot of money for the company. They could pay dividends from their works for Mao's directors, screenwriters, and actors? They could receive millions of dollars in banknotes and live a life of success and fame, but we could only be unknown and earn the wages of ordinary workers?
Technology oters have always been known for their strong resistance spirit and weak ability to move. These game development engineers initially just secretly add easter eggs to the game, such as making a hidden room, and players will see the name of the game developer when they break in.
Such a weak resistance will naturally not be taken seriously, and the treatment of engineers has not improved at all. Therefore, when the new president wants to strictly discipline and crack down on "scatteredness", the four guys with the most resentment can no longer bear it - not giving me a good work treatment or a good working environment? Is it unbearable!
So the four of them defected from Atari, founded a musician to cooperate with him, and founded Activision Game Company. (Note 3)
These five guys are all paupers. Activision is now poor, but Chen Chong still plans to acquire it. It is easy to make money and talent is rare. These four engineers are all very powerful people. Before they resigned, they were responsible for more than half of Atari's game development work.
This is also because Chen Chong specially found a lawyer to consult. He was afraid that Atari would use the non-competitive agreement among peers to prohibit these four engineers from developing games running on Atari VCS. After all, in this era, electronic game companies are all in the hardware and software. Activision is the first third-party game development company to take the lead, and there are considerable legal risks.
Since the lawyer said there was no big problem, Chen Chong naturally stopped worrying and signed the acquisition contract.
Activision's five founders are more difficult to deal with than Bricklin in Boston. After some negotiations, Chen Chong invested $500,000 to occupy 69% of the shares, and the remaining shares were divided by several founders.
Signing Activision, on the one hand, facilitates Chen Chong to steal classic games to make money. On the other hand, Atari is a subsidiary of Warner. It is a very pleasant thing to suck the blood of his mortal enemy and strengthen himself.
After signing the documents, the rest was taken care of by the law firm. Chen Chong saw that it was getting late, so he said goodbye and left, headed straight for UCLA - he asked his uncle's cousin to have dinner together in the evening.
In life, it is not just a stand-alone game. You should contact each other frequently because of blood relationships. After all, friendship will be betrayal, love will cheat, and kinship will never be lost.
Chen Chong followed the map and found a Chinese restaurant that he had contacted in advance. He chose a seat by the window. Then he took a magazine from his backpack to pass the time, waiting for his cousin to arrive.
My uncle gave my cousin a common name in China and the West, Zhao Lily (LIly), now studying geography at UCLA's School of Arts and Sciences.
After waiting for about half an hour, Chen Chong saw a broken and old Chevrolet driving at the entrance of the restaurant. Two girls jumped out of it, both tall, one with black hair and the other with blonde hair.
It is probably the one with black hair that is my cousin Lily.
Shen Chong put away the magazine and sat upright.
Sure enough, after entering the restaurant, after looking around for a week, the black-haired woman rushed straight towards Shen, and then asked in Chinese: "Cousin?"
Chen Chong responded and stood up by the way. Just as he was about to speak, the girl came up enthusiastically and hugged him.
"Long time no see, cousin Alan." The girl let go of Shen Chong, looked him up and down, shook her head and said, "I'm still so thin and weak."
Chen Chong smiled and remembered the records in his diary. When this cousin was eight or nine years old, he had gone to Hong Kong for a while, and during this period he beat him to his nose and face.
"This is my friend, Helena." My cousin introduced: "Helena, this is my cousin, Allen from Hong Kong."
"Hello." Chen Chong shook hands with Helena. She had a good appearance, blonde hair and blue eyes, but her skeleton was large and she looked very strong, without the soft feeling of a woman.
"I was busy with a project in the lab and almost forgot to have dinner with you." After taking the seat, Lily apologized: "I didn't have time to change my clothes. If Helena hadn't had a car, I would have been running on the road now. Have you been waiting for a long time?"
"No, just a moment." Chen Chong shook his hand, waved to the waiter, and said, "Are you hungry? Order food first, eat something to keep your stomach."
"Yes, I'm so hungry. Helena and I didn't eat much at noon."
Lily picked up the menu and discussed ordering with Helena.
Chen Chong was watching this cousin. Lily was a mixed-race child, integrating the advantages of Eastern and Western races. Her facial features were three-dimensional and her outlines were clear, but her skeleton was even and her lines were soft. She was tall and had a wheat-colored skin, which was very charming and had a bit of a supermodel style.
"Some time ago, Helena and I rode our bicycles to Yellowstone Park." Lily saw Chen Chong paying attention to her skin, and she raised her long shawl hair generously, revealing her wheat-colored shoulders, raised her eyebrows, and said with a smile: "How is it, it's very healthy and sexy, right?"
Chen Chong nodded. This skin color, combined with her sunny smile, is indeed extremely lethal and a model of a virgin girl...
Lily is cheerful and talkative. Although she hasn't seen Shen Chong for a long time, she has no communication gap at all. She speaks like beads and laughs keeps attracting the attention of many diners in the restaurant. Helena speaks less, but only occasionally adds to the loopholes in Lily's words.
"By the way, Allen." Halfway through the meal, Lily asked suddenly, "What are you doing in Los Angeles? Are you communicating with students?"
"No." Chen Chong ate a piece of fish and said, "I've dropped out of school long ago. I'm here now for a business."
"No!" Lily said in surprise: "Have you dropped out of school? Does my dad know?"
"I haven't told him yet." Chen Chong shook his head.
"You're dead." Lily looked at him with the eyes of a dead fellow Taoist, and said gloatingly: "From childhood, my father has always regarded you as my role model. Every time he beats me up, he teaches me to learn from you and study hard. I didn't expect you to be today. If he heard that you dropped out of school, he will definitely go crazy."
As Lily said, she couldn't help laughing. It seemed that she was a little bit miserable by her uncle back then...
"I heard that you can apply to Harvard, but I tried my best to come to Los Angeles. Could it be to avoid your father?"
"Of course, my dad is determined to educate me as an oriental lady who never leaves home." Lily held up her wineglass and said with a smile: "But my ideal since childhood is to be able to travel around the world, so I came here, sunshine, beaches, stars, and food, much more fun than Boston."
Chen Chong shook his head straight, it seemed that his uncle's education was very failed...
"By the way, why did you drop out of school?"
"I'm not studying for money." Chen Chong said perfunctorily: "I found a way to make money, so naturally I don't need to study anymore."
"Vulgar!" Lily despised him and said, "You are still the same. You used to study for your parents, and now you are making money. You have no life ideals or personal hobbies at all. It's so sad."
"I am a vulgar person." Chen Chong picked up a piece of beef and said, "Eating and drinking enough is my life ideal."
Lily was so sorry that she gave him a love and ideal education, but seeing Chen Chong looked like he was talking about you, I was eating my lazy and finally gave up.
"What business are you doing in Los Angeles?" Lily was silent for a few seconds and asked again, "Do I need my help?"
"No, it's done." Chen Chong put down his chopsticks and said, "I'll go to Boston the day after tomorrow. Do you have anything to take home?"
"Yes, yes." Lily said quickly: "I bought a lot of gifts this time, I will sort them out tonight, and then you can take them back for me."
"Then I'll come here to get it tomorrow?"
"No, you're here in Los Angeles for the first time and you can't drive." Lily said considerately: "Tell me your address and I'll send it to you tomorrow."
"Okay." Chen Chong reported his room number at the Roosevelt Hotel.
"Wow!" Lily expressed her surprise exaggeratedly, "Cousin, you are very rich, staying in such a good hotel."
"Hong Kong is known as the Oriental Pearl, and there are gold, silver and jewelry everywhere." Chen Chong smiled, "Don't you need to remember it?"
"No, Helena is very sensitive to numbers. She will never forget it after hearing it once." Lily turned to Helena and said, "Right?"
Helena nodded.
"Awesome!" Chen Chong admired and complimented: "You guys who study geography are crouching tigers, hidden dragons."
"Helena is not a geography student, she is a math student." Lily corrected Chen Chong's mistake and introduced: "She is helping me make a geography mathematical model."
After eating and drinking, the three of them walked out of the restaurant and at the door, Shen Chong looked at the tattered Chevrolet and asked, "Why, I've been admitted to college, and my uncle didn't buy you a car?"
"Buy it." Lily said with a bitter face: "I was hit by it, so scared that I didn't even dare to go back home during the Spring Festival."
"Not it?" Chen Chong didn't believe it, "Uncle is not a tiger, can you eat it?"
"I won't eat it." Lily complained: "He is very long-winded, and he is very scary when he is blowing his beard and staring at him."
That's right, after all, he was a gold medal thug in the underworld back then, with a strong murderous aura...
"Lily, if you can do me a favor," Chen Chong bewitched: "I'll buy you a new car, how about it?"
"What are you busy with?"
Chen Chong took out a magazine from his backpack, pointed to the cover, and said, "Help me find this person in your school."
